On the field he was very arrogant. As any exceptional athlete should be. Some carry that arrogance of the field. Some dont.

As Gibson said. If you saw the swing. You’d never think it was going over the wall. Eck supplied the power. All he did was manage to swing the bat one more time. One of the greatest moments in sporting history.

It was a slider, an off speed pitch. Eck didn't provide the power.

Say what you want but those years 1985-1991 were some of the best damn baseball you will ever see. What an era, Dennis Eckersley was a dominant closer and not an arrogant sob. Tigers, Bluejays, Redsox, Twins, Brewers, Royals, Mets, Cards, and the Giants. In a way I am sad that that era and those players who were part of it have left the game so long ago.

Jays fan here. I didn't like Eck a a pitcher. Seemed so arrogant. But looking back, what an awesome hurler he was. Here, he's one awesome storyteller.

Right field, Reserve Level, at the end, above A's bullpen, aisle seat, halfway up. That's where I was sitting on October 15th, 1988. I was 11. As a lifelong, 4th Generation Dodgers fan, I am an eyewitness to history.

He would get his ring next year, 1989. Eckersley averaged 200 IP and a 3.64ERA as a starter over the first 12 years of his career. For his final 10 years in the league he transitioned into an elite closer, averaging 37 SV per year. He would finish his 24 year career with 197 W and 390 SV. He debuted in April 1978 and pitched until the playoffs in 1998! First ballot HOF in 2004. PS - he struck out Jim Thome in his final inning pitched.

Kirk waiting for the backdoor slider on 3&2. Eck counting on that pitch to the left hander. A short wristy swing timed perfectly (golf teachers are seemingly mentally incapable of understanding). History. Two greats doing their best. Baseball at it's finest. I hope it comes back.

Eck was THE closer in 1988 and for Gibby to hit one off him made the moment that more special.

LA native and long time Dodger fan here. I have to say I've seen the filmed conversation of Gibson and Eckersley, and it was very cool. They both remember that time 30 years later, and it's a testament to the peculiar kind of historical baseball moments that people still talk about. And Eckersley, for all his accomplishments, acknowledges each mistake he made. That's class. I recommend watching the 'Vin Scully' video of that whole 'at bat' scene. It has everything any baseball fan has experienced: 9th inning in a World Series game; injured star player coming in as pitch hitter; tie score runner on base; count goes to 0 and 2. Meanwhile, attempted base runner steals thwarted by pitcher's throws to first base, and the home town crowd booing. Count goes to 2 and 2. Base runner steals second. Count goes to 3 and 2 bottom of the 9th! Final pitch gets swatted into the outfield seats and the crowd literally goes nuts. That's as good as baseball gets, my friends.

Is this what Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley going to be remembered for? Not for his WS win. Not for all the saves but for one walk off homer? It's nonsense.

That's why it's easy for Eck to handle. For Eck it was one bad blip on a hall of fame career. For Gibson, it was one of only a few shining moments

Actually Gibson was an integral part of the 1984 Detroit Tigers team which won the World Series. And in 1988 the Dodgers wouldn't have won the World Series without him--in fact they probably wouldn't have made the playoffs.
@jamesaren152
@jamesaren152 4 года назад
When the situation presented itself, he succeeded three times in the WORLD SERIES. His Dodgers homer is the one that any kid who’s ever held a bat has dreamed about.
@jeffmejia3556

He was an integral part of the locker room. Tough love type of player who made sure everyone was accountable for doing the their part good or bad. Word had it that prior to his arrival to the Dodgers there were a lot of Dodgers playing pranks, not taking the game seriously, not playing up to their capabilities. Gibson changed that. I agree he might have mediocre for that era but you still needed to be a really good player to be in the “Bigs”. Not like now with so many teams with expansions. There are players in the league now that would not be good enough to be in the “Bigs” in Gibsons era.
