One of my first and favorite baseball memories is Dave Concepcion hitting a homerun off Eckersley in the all star game. I loved it because I am a Reds fan and Concepcion was my favorite player but I always had respect for Eckersley
Mines is 1990 REDS October 🏆 😏 Just so happens The UNLV Runnin Rebels had a Great 1990 as well 🏆 NCAA Was 10yo and have yet to see either of them Win another Championship 🤷♂️ & Yet to see The Lions Win 1 @ all But Soon . Somethings got to Give 😁 But I have got to see The Bengals make 3 SuperB owls and 1 of them recently which is pretty freakin awesome . Bengals looking Good & Lions moving the Right Direction . REDS are really starting to look Good and The Future is Bright ! 👍 💪
What a great story. All his great sports highlights balanced with the human side, yet without cheap sensationalism. I knew him for years in his hometown of Fremont. He was always a nice and genuine guy. Glad he made it through so well.
My uncle was Eck's dentist in Fremont as a kid. My uncle would leave his office just to go watch Eck pitch as a little leaguer. He said Eck was a man among boys. RIP Uncle Jack.
As a New Englander, I remember the Eck while he was with the Red Sox...always great to watch the high kick sidearm delivery...great respect for him...hard worker who loved the game...he was his worst enemy but never disrespected the game...wish you and your family the best Eck!
I remember my uncle(rip) who played catcher/QB at Richmond HS during Ecks time in HS. He and Willie McGee played against Ecks HS and even back then..he was a dominant pitcher.
I grew up here in Boston, and we are so proud and fortunate to have the Eck calling our games from the booth. Dennis has the perfect combination to be where he is. He's got a great sense of humor, he's got the looks, and most importantly, he's got that great baseball knowledge. We have a great team of color analysts for the Red Sox on our NESN baseball station. Besides the Eck, we've got the scooter, ex-Red Sox 2nd baseman Jerry Remy. We also have ex-Sox slugger and Hall of Famer, Jim Rice. Ex-Sox knuckleballer Tim Wakefield, and ex-Sox player and Fox colorman Steve Lyons. Well, it's Friday and the All-Star break was Tuesday. Time for the second half to begin. And if it's anything like the first half, some fun we're going to have here in Boston. The Red Sox are leading the Major Leagues with a record of 68-30. Their best first half since 1949. Rightfielder Mookie Betts is leading the Majors with a .359 batting average. He also has 23 home runs, and 51 RBI. Designated Hitter J D. Martinez is leading the Majors with 29 home runs and 80 RBI's.The Sox have four starting pitchers with at least 10 wins. Including ace Chris Sale who is 10-4, (4th) with a 2.23 ERA, (1st ) and 188 strikeouts (1st).
Congratulations to the Red Sox and the great city of Boston on this year's World Series victory, you guy's got a hell of a team, and great fans, from an Oakland CA guy and Athletics fan of
Since Eck retired from the NESN booth after the 2022 season and with Jerry Remy's passing prior to that, watching Red Sox games just isn't the same. Even when the Sox were bad, the broadcasts were always entertaining.
Dig this: ln the opening highlights of this story, as Eck's story begins, it shows Kirk Gibson hitting a homerun. That was game 1 of the 1988 World Series. Dodgers vs Oakland A's. He hit it off Dennis to end and win the game. That's when and where Dennis Eckersly created and coined the phrase 'Walk Off Homerun'.
I got to interview Eck--he was always a favorite. The feat that gets glossed over in this show is the 21 and 2/3 consecutive hitless innings he pitched in '77, with the no-hitter sandwiched in the middle of that stretch. Only Cy Young strung together more such innings in MLB history. Yeah--THAT Cy Young. Think about it--if a guy goes 21 or so SCORELESS innings now it's a pretty big deal, let alone hitless.
Man…. Just 3 more W W W’s & 10 more Saves To officially get to 200 W’s & 400 Saves That would have been Awesome Still an obviously Great Career That got Eck into Cooperstown Cy Young MVP 3 Straight World Series & 💍
the Indians of 77 were awful and eck had an awesome year like curt schilling with the Phillies when he pitched great but more often went just over 500 in winning percentage. the no hitter against frank tananna of the angels I listened to on a car radio at the age of ten. my favourite the next twenty odd years!!!!!
There are few things more enjoyable than watching old ball players whine about opponents not obeying the "unwritten rules" of the game. So what if Eck pointed at guys after striking them out? So what if a young guy flips his bat after a home run? That stuff makes the game sooooo much more entertaining. You don't want some guy to flip his bat? Then strike him out! Problem solved. Eck was one of a kind.
