Five Oscars went to William Friedkin’s dynamic NYPD saga based on the exploits of detective Eddie Egan, who envisioned himself being played by Rod Taylor. Instead, Gene Hackman leapt to stardom in the role. The Department, annoyed by scripter Ernest Tidyman’s portrayal of the force, canned Egan seven hours before he was to sign his retirement papers!

I want a lot more than 3 minutes of Dennis Lehane talking about The French Connection.

That ending man, Popeye reloading his gun not giving a damn about what he has just done and then dissapearing into the derelict building with the creepy jazz score playing in the background. Truely haunting. What a film.

He's right, it is underrated as a film and the class element is a big part of it along with the obsession to land the big whale. Doyle also relishes violence and is a bigot, it's all part of the character.

One of those films that still stands up and should be seen by anyone who says they love film.

Another great movie about obsession (and how it destroys those involved) is David Fincher's Zodiac

The sequel for me is the more underrated film. It has Hackman's greatest performance as Popeye especially that cold turkey scene and the ending is every bit as great the first film. The First film is a classic and still is Friedkin greatest film, also shout out must go to the late great Roy Scheider who had a great 70's and his performance as Cloudy is great.

Never cared much for the sequel. It's a magnificent stand alone like the original Matrix. But your 100% on about Friedkin and Roy Scheider. Equal boss level those guys including Hackman.

I like The French Connection II a lot but it does not work as a follow-on. They would never send Popeye to France after the catastrophe of the first film, and indeed it undermines the ending of the first one.

Channel 38, WSBK... They were awesome with showing uncut/minimally cut films in the late 70's. As a (too?) young kid of 7-8, I first saw The Deer Hunter and Apocalypse now for their weekend 10pm slot. SUCH good memories hearing Dennis reference that time and place :)

THE FRENCH CONNECTION THE EXORCIST and the 1977 “The Wages of Fear” remake SORCERER, the 70’s was this director’s extraordinary decade though his impact/ influence will remain timeless William Friedkin (August 29th 1935-August 7th 2023) May He Rest In Peace

The French connection part 2 is also a really good film . It's different to the first film but still lots of tension and the obsession is there . The part where he's kidnapped and hooked on heroin is hauntingly brilliant .

Frank Sinatra was also considered for Popeye Doyle.

The fact that Doyle and his partner are reassigned kind of indicates that what happened in the room at the end wasn't good.

It would have been a completely different film. Gleason showed he could pull off a dramatic role, but not sure about an action film.

richard lopez true. They also considered Pacino till they saw Scheider off Broadway. Considering Egan and Grosso were from Brooklyn and the Bronx via east Harlem line Gleason and Pacino I believe that it could have worked.

They couldn't get anyone to be Popeye Doyle!Newman McQueen Rod Taylor said no!Peter Boyle also declined he never got over it !Jimmy Breslin was considered but he didn't know how to drive!Well Gene got the role and the rest is history!

I read the Mad Magazine parody first, "What's The Connection?" Which has all the plot or action points end with the question, "What's the connection?", meaning; there isn't any. So did not expect this movie to make much sense, let alone be good. But it is! Actor Dennis Farina was a police officer in Chicago for 18 years before going into showbiz, picked "The French Connection" as the most realistic or accurate movie about police work. And "Barney Miller" as the most accurate TV cop show. Begging the question, "Really?"

It is actually a great film about obsession and perhaps some jealousy. But for me (and this is just a personal opinion. It does mean the movie is a bad film) I've seen this kinda character played out so many times before in other movies and shows particularly in the Dirty Harry movies with Clint Eastwood. The main thing I didn't like about SVU was how Chris Meloni's character seemed to become more and more of a Popeye Doyle/Harry Callahan type of character as the series progressed to the point even he got tired. Other than that this was a great movie and I agree about the ending. It would definitely not be accepted today. It is only ruined by the fact there are two sequels.

I didn’t know there was a second sequel. TV movie called ‘Popeye Doyle’. Was it any good?
@Sdea1903
@Sdea1903 Год назад
@@Uhhmelmuhay I think it was a feature length pilot for a Popeye Doyle TV series. The series wasn't picked up. Ed O'Neill played Popeye. It's average. It's on you tube

I didn't realize Popeye wasn't the good guy until I reached my early 20s. My brain had been conditioned to see good guy vs bad guy dynamics. Popeye is a terrible human being.

Is French Connection 2015-16 Daredevil ?
@LoganWood121
@LoganWood121 4 года назад
Yes Joe Carnahan cut scenes from The French Connection into his Daredevil sizzle reel. The atmosphere and setting of this would be ideal for a DD or Punisher film.
