Directed by Mike Hodges and starring Michael Caine, the shocking and stylish Get Carter is the crème de la crème of 70's British gangster movies. As the vengeful mobster Jack Carter, Caine retains the cool, sardonic nature of his Harry Palmer character but with a distinctly ruthless violent streak. Roy Budd's jazz-infused funk score has developed as much of a fan base as the movie itself.
As always, you can find reviews, podcasts, and more commentaries and deep-dives into the films you don't know you love yet over on the Trailers From Hell mothership:

Best Brit gangster flick of all time. Nobody better (or worse) than Jack Carter!

No shaky-cam. No techno music. No BJJ, Krav Maga, or Capoeira. No matching uniforms. No unnecessary world-building. No attempt to lay the groundwork for a cash-grabbing sequel. No fancy special effects. It's the sort of thing that Robert Rodriguez would have made at the start of his career. I love it.

@@obediahpolkinghorniii564 Well, it was the way most films of that era -- the 1960s to 1970s -- were made. Story. Characters. Great actors. Amazing directors. Classic movies.

sound track is one of the best ever, sound tracks can make or break films and ofen can take the mood of the film to places far beyound where the visals alone could take it. music in this is so atmospheric, its brillaint.

The opening journey from Kings Cross up through England, through the (still slightly functioning) industrial areas, and further up is just brilliant. I had a good friend who lived in London but came from Teeside, and he said he always heard that score in his head during the journey. Less fun now that the old trains with compartments are all gone. I know they were old filthy and falling apart, but they were much more fun, especially on long journeys. Had them on the continent as well. I remember being in one of those of the Orient Express (the real one, not that stupid tourist job) from Budapest to Paris in 93. You could flip arms up, pull the seat banks out, and make the entire thing into a sort of bed...if no one else was there. Much more comfortable and far cheaper than a couchette.

Yes, absolutely classic. I always wondered how it ended up on Dare. I couldn't really see any of the Human League popsters having any interest or knowledge in this film , especially at that time.

Mmm.....I have long thought that 'Get Carter' and 'Long Good Friday' are the finest British gangster films ever made - but it is incredibly difficult to say which one is the best. So at the end of the day, we just have to accept that they are both absolute classics in their own right and in very different ways.

I might rank Mona Lisa above The Long Good Friday.

It's interesting that they bookend the 1970s so could probably only have been made in that decade .

amazing movie mirroring what was happening at the time in newcastle so spot on was it in tone that the scenes in the country house hq of the villain had to be halted when the police raided it as it had unknowingly rented from a top villain doing much the same as john osbourne.

Hodges and Cain did a jokier take on the neo-noir with PULP a couple of years later.

Must be good if Carter calls Newcastle a craphouse, and locals still want to preserve the locations.

I'm so glad that they changed the title of the book that 'Get Carter' is based on - 'Jack's Return Home' just hasn't got the same ring to it. 'Payroll' - mentioned here as also shot in Newcastle - is a great film too.

and how many people pick up on the fact that the young girl his Neace is actually his own daughter ( he had an affair with his brothers wife ) the real reason buried in the film is why he goes mental not just because his brother was murdered i the abuse of his daughter that really sent him over the edge

I know. When Carter visits Keith who's all beat up, Keith is yelling at him as he's leaving and says the poor bastard didn't even knkw the kid wasn't his. Pretty fucked up on Carters part what he did with his brothers wife though.
