Two music aficionados get together and discuss composers and compositions.
Dennis Prager wonders why we don’t have instrumental music on Shabbos when that was a big part of the Holy Temple. Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks has a beautiful answer: that the lack of instruments empowers the human voice. They discuss Jewish composers of non-Jewish religious music and challenge great musicians to compose for us.

We all miss you so much, Rabbi Sacks! You have been one of the giants of the generation, a truly Gadol Hador! Beyond your immense knowledge, your extraordinary intelligence, you had the rare gift of touching the souls of the people who had the great opportunity to listen to your teachings! We are so grateful to you, and to HaShem that gave such a gift to all of us!

Thank you for this wonderful conversation between 2 real music lovers. I can now better understand the profound grief of the Jewish nation after the second temple was destroyed.

I think that the most religious type of music is unaccompanied human vocals and because judaism celebrates the allure of this world but also retains the truths of the earliest pure ways, there had to be the perfect balance - that though so much was allowed as humans learned more, we had to keep one day a week to remember the most halaqic way to sing devotion. Also, a prayer for martyrs is always a good practice.

The points you're making Dennis Prager actually reinforce why instruments should not be used on Shabbat. We'd focus on the music instead of on Hashem.

the main point the Rabbi is making is that yes Jewish music is deficient but consciously and appropriately so - full instrumental music is only partially permitted - this is to convey the enduring sense of loss that exile and being bereft of a Temple and religious commonwealth represent - it defines the longing for full redemption materiel and spiritual that is a part of the Jewish and human pre redemptive psyche - it reminds us that we have much work still to perform and that in this era the celebrating of anything can only be partial

What is wrong with the truth? If we had used musical instruments on Shabbat we might come to carry in areas without an eruv or repair them if they break (and become mukseh).

Is there anything in halachah that says you can't question rabbis? In the Torah? Seems to be barring music is taking away from, or altering, Torah.

The reason we are not allowed to play instruments on Shabbat is because of the messoarah. The fence around the Torah. because there is a chance that the instrument will come into disrepair, we do not play them on the Sabbath. For it is for bidden to work on the sabbath.

G-d willing. Where did you hear this?
@samworthy1257
@samworthy1257 2 года назад
No that is not at all true. We don't follow what chrustians want. We prepare though and get ready to build the temple when the messiah comes. And no if the entire world doesn't recognise him that won't fulfill one of the requirements of the messiah and we won't recognise him. That means christians saying he isn't messiah he is antichrust would not make us accept him and let him build the temple Tanach tells us: - Messiah has to be recognised by all - also must achoeve workd peace - must bring all Jews back to Israel. - must bring whole world to belief in one G-d of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob Then we would recognise the messiah as the messiah and he can get to work on the 3rd temple. We will hear the 8 stringed harps

Great dialogue! I believe we are allowed to disagree with the rabbis. All men are capable of making mistakes. Not even Moshe was perfect. And look at both David and Solomon. All men capable of huge mistakes. Yes, most definitely question the Rabbis.
