Agreed. Thankfully this config of VIR isn’t usually offered for racing. It’s the 1.1 mi Patriot Course, it was only used because VIR unexpectedly closed the Full Course for emergency paving about a week before the race.
Lol but I would've done the same. For some reason it feels safer to slam your trunk into the wall than go head-on into it. Plus I think going sideways in the grass slows you down a bit more than going straight but with brakes. Haven't scientifically tested that theory though.
@@rekordea the whole thing is just a case of reacting too late and needing the car to do more than it was capable of. Too much speed? I'll hit the brakes harder. *lockup* Not enough track left to get the car to rotate? I'll just turn faster. *slide* He was cooked before he even hit the brakes, so counter-steer wouldn't have changed anything but the point of impact on the car.
Too focused on mirrors, missed the braking point, locked up, then slid into the wet grass. Hit the wall so hard it bent the aluminum seat and broke the differential mount.
After the point he entered the grass there was nothing he could´ve done. Also, why the hell did they put a concrete wall so close to the track? There seems to be enough run-off area to me considering it isn´t thaat fast of a corner. But hey, they probably know it better tho then some idiot couch expert xD
