Denser Than You Think - Science Experiment

Simple density science experiment that you can try at home to see how liquids and objects with different densities behave. Using three fluids (syrup, water and oil) we can see they clearly have different densities, and form clear layers. By dropping items with different densities into the glass, we can see which fluids are denser than them.

Wow, this reminds me of the childrens science books I got when I was just a kid, I always loved looking at the pictures of different colored liquids of different densities. It was one of the first "scientific" experiments I did as a child, I think the second one was the weighted pen cap with an air bubble inside in a 2 liter bottle full of water that would float or sink depending on how hard you squeezed. Good memories. Also reminds me of the "I Spy" books too, I got one of those with that science book...

If you really want to amaze some people, drop an ice cube in a glass of oil. It will float. Ice is so much less dense than water that it will float on the surface of oil. Meanwhile, frozen oil is denser than oil and sinks. It's not quite dense enough to sink in water, though, but under the right conditions (cold enough water, a heavier type of cooking oil), it may sink.

A grape or a bottle cap is a solid right? Solids are denser than liquids right? Water*(liquid)* is denser than bottle cap*(solid)*.Why?
@vneckexhibition
@vneckexhibition 6 лет назад
No, solids are not denser than liquids as a rule. Did you watch the video just now? An object is a solid or liquid based on the state of its matter, and how rigid and strong the bonds in it's molecules are. But an object's DENSITY refers to how much mass it has in comparison to the size it takes up. Styrofoam is a solid, but it's full of air, so it floats.
@vneckexhibition
@vneckexhibition 6 лет назад
(Also, technically, the water is not denser than the bottle cap, either. The cap is acting like a boat, but if you can't understand states of matter, then I don't expect you to get the difference between floating as a density interaction and floating because of dispersion, or surface tension for that matter.
