The bulk specific gravity test determines the specific gravity of a compacted Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) sample by calculating the ratio of its weight to the weight of an equivalent volume of water. This test allows for the calculation of the sample's apparent specific gravity, bulk specific gravity, bulk SSD specific gravity, and absorption.
HMA bulk specific gravity is essential for establishing weight-volume relationships and calculating volume-based properties such as air voids and voids in mineral aggregate (VMA). The test takes approximately 7 minutes to complete, excluding preparation time. Testing multiple samples can reduce the time per sample, although additional preparation might be required if contamination needs to be cleaned from the sample's surface.
