Removing a dent on a motorcycle gas tank with an adhesive dent puller. Tank material is much thicker than a body panel so this is a good test to see if one of these actually works

Excellent ! Looks great compared to what it was and the kit paid you back your investment. I've got one to try here, too. Now i feel better about it.

Im most definitely impressed and inspired - I like the technique also of tapping of the hammer lightly

Thanks ! Yep, I was surprised at how well it worked on the thicker tank metal. It seemed that tapping on the edges of the dent with the more pointy hammer tip while pulling in the middle seemed to relax the bend and work it right out 👍. My current project bike has a dent in the rounded front corner of the tank so it will be interesting to see if it can pull that one out as well 🤞🤞. Thanks again and all the best ! Steve

The Shiny Toaster , yep it worked surprisingly well on the thicker tank metal and that was the first time I had even tried pulling a dent with a PDR kit. It was just a cheap PDR set off eBay too 👍. Preheating the metal a bit seemed to help a lot with how well the glue would grip for sure.

Better luck than I had but your tool looks better than the one I bought. Nice job.

Hey man ! Yep, it actually worked better than I thought it was going to on the thicker tank metal. I think the trick is getting the hot glue to really get a bite onto the surface.

A wood dowel and hot glue. Took me about 5 times with a wood dowel pull. Baseball size wop.

Nice job. Thanks for the video. I got the same kit and I tried to use it on a Honda shadow tank. The glue is so weak. Did tapping with a hammer made a real difference?
@StevesDIYs
@StevesDIYs 3 года назад
Hey man ! Thanks. Tapping with the hammer seemed to relieve some of the stress in the metal from where the outer edges of the dent were so it didn't just pop back in when the pressure was released. I had trouble with the glue sticking as well until I heated the surface up a bit with a head gun (a hair dryer would probably work as well since I didn't get it very hot) prior to sticking the glue on it. I think it allows the glue to cool slower so it will get a better grip on the paint. All the best ! Steve

Hello, here’s the link to the one I got…seemed to work pretty good for the price for sure and I’ve used it several more times on regular thickness car body panels with good success too: www.ebay.com/itm/115850230688?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=wpi4Q8R9Toy&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=sfmcIdagSM-&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY . Nice work bro, can u tell me the liquid substance u use to remove the glue?
@StevesDIYs
@StevesDIYs 2 года назад
Thanks man ! I was surprised the dent removal tool would work on thick metal like a gas tank but it did really good 👍. I used regular alcohol (like from the grocery store) to remove the glue. It seemed to harden up the glue by making it cold so then it would pop loose from the paint easily. Hope this helps and all the best ! Steve

Awesome! Having trouble removing lots of dents out of my vt1100. Where did you get the kit brother?
@StevesDIYs
@StevesDIYs 3 года назад
Hey man ! I got mine from Black Horse Racing (blackhorse-racing.com)...they were closing them out I think so I got it pretty cheap. I looked on the tool bag of the kit and the brand is “Super PDR” which seems to be still showing available on places like eBay 👍. I only used a few items out of the kit (the ones shown in the video), so a little kit would probably work fine. Biggest thing I learned was to preheat the metal with a heat gun (or blow dryer would do the same) where the hot glue gets put. When I didn’t pre-heat it, the glue didn’t grip enough to pull the dent out without letting go...that and using the little soft tip hammer to tap around the edges of the dent as I put pulling force on it seemed to relax the metal so the dents pulled on out. Hope this helps and all the best ! Steve

@@StevesDIYs Ok gotcha. I am looking them up now. Tried the whole glue stick method and it just popped right off. I made sure the area was clean. But then again. I was using a harbor freight kit. So i am going to look for the kit and in the meantime, strip the tank and get ready for painting. That way when it gets here i can just prime it and paint it

Would it help to keep the metal warm
@StevesDIYs
@StevesDIYs 2 месяца назад
Hey ! Based on how much better the glue gripped the warm surface, I’d say keeping the metal warm (even something like pulling the dent out in the sun so it stayed warm) would probably help indeed. Keeping the surface warm might also help with keeping the paint more flexible so it wouldn’t get as damaged (although the paint in this tank was just rattle can paint so I didn’t care if it go damaged since I was going to sand it down and repaint anyway). All the best ! Steve

I've been trying but no success with small puller. Slide hammer worked well with some patience. Found that a bit of heat is key. I used cold glue for slide hammer I can not for the life of me get the hot glue to work... Doesn't hold...
@StevesDIYs
@StevesDIYs 2 года назад
Hey man ! Yep, it was a struggle to get it to stick without pre heating. For me, pulling up with the bridge then tapping around with the little hammer seemed to work pretty good. I didn’t try the slide hammer, but I’d say it would work if the glue would stick enough.

@@StevesDIYs I've been repairing a vtr250 tank... Nowhere as bad as yours but enough of a challenge for me. I used slide hammer with cold glue initially and that worked OK. But then changed over to the hot glue with slide hammer. Glue stuck OK... Actually better than I thought it was going to.... It pulled the paint off... Haha... Doesn't matter as I'm going to sandblast the tank anyway. I just want to minimise how much filler I would need to use... Think it should come up OK... Thanks for your vids... Regards from perth...

The little dents left there aren’t much deeper than the orange peel in the paint
@StevesDIYs

👍. Yep, once I sanded it all down to prep it for actual automotive paint (vs the rattle can mess that was on it when I got it lol), I only had to use a few extra coats of build primer to level that area back out. The tank (and bike) turned out really nice.

Hey man ! It was some rattle can stuff someone painted the tank with prior to me getting the parts bike. Looked like a 4 year old painted it...I think they must have been going for the “Orange Peel” look on the paint 🤣🤣🤣. All the best ! Steve

@StevesDIYs
@StevesDIYs 2 года назад
Thanks ! Yep, that may help too as the glue didn’t seem to want to stick very good. Seems like there are different levels of glue quality that come with the kits…mine was a really cheap kit (low price), so it may not have been the best glue that came with the kit.
