Negotiating a contract as a dentist is a critical conversation to not screw up. Your contract will determine not only how you're paid, but also all your rights while you're working and afterwards. And it's something most dentists have almost no experience in. In this video, I teach you everything I wish I'd known sooner about negotiating a dental associate contract.

I think 2 part-times tends to be better than 1 full-time. Never put your fate and career into the hands of one random dentist. That's a lot of power you're giving to someone who has the exact same degree and qualifications as you do. It can lead to a toxic and abusive situation. I would say the only exception would be where you're working at a clinic where you're the only solo provider full-time (such as your case), but those kinds of opportunities are rare. And you may have to make a move to a rural area (such as your case) which can sacrifice your personal life (i.e. dating, etc).

Thanks for the videos. The work you've done to humanize the pursuit of dentistry with these pointers and tips has really helped me navigate the uncertainty of things from DAT prep to what my 10 year plan should be after dental school. Looking forward has been less daunting for me and I've been able to progress with more conviction thanks to your insights.

If the office manager or treatment coordinator is the owner's wife or husband especially when they have no knowledge nor background in dentistry that is a massive red flag for the associate dentist. Nothing good ever comes out of nepotism. You'd be better off working for a corporation than be with that arrangement. Also, staff tends to dislike nepotism arrangements which can harm office morale.

I'm a hygienist and worked w/2 dentist wives/office manager offices. I felt very uncomfortable working w/2 bosses and eventually left both offices. The wive's "dragon ladies", too bad I had to learn the hard way.

@@vernan.9630 yep. Nothing good comes out of nepotism. You, as the employee, will always be "wrong". If you have legit concerns about spouse, you cannot bring that to the owner. Owner will always side with the spouse.

idk in my country there is a high percentage of unemployed dentists, whenever i apply for a job there is at least 200 dentists applying for it too i dont get any leverage to negotiate as there are other 200 dentists that are willing to take any offer they get due to unemployment.
