Dental Myths vs Fact - Doctor and Dentist Conversations - Dr Gill
There are lots of things that come to the fore with regards to the cat of our teeth, but some of those things that we do, in thinking, they're right, might actually be causing us harm
In this video, we sit down with dentist, Dr Alison Mace, to look at a few myths which seem to continually crop up around teeth, whether or not that is charcoal toothpaste. Actually any good for you, to the risks of getting dental veneers in foreign countries answering that perennial question, what's the actual truth about fluoride?
It's possible that dental myths get potentiated, because people have a fear of going to the dentist, but as you'll see here, a lot of those dental myths actually increase the likelihood that you'll need to go to the dentist - hopefully with these facts, you'll be able to protect your teeth and your smile and hopefully you wallet by not buying carbon tooth paste

Yes, PLEASE talk about homemade toothpastes! Most are based around bentonite clay. Is that as bad as charcoal for teeth?

I honestly don’t know the actual answer there. But I suspect that from a safety perspective they might not be as good as store bought

The best bit of advice I was given from Reddit in 2020 during the lockdown is floss but you don’t have to floss at specific times. Carry a flossing harp on you, when you’re bored, or doing very little, pull it out and floss. I noticed over the course of a few months a several bits of plaque break off. I’m fairly sure in fact it helped me not have to go to the dentist during lockdown.

Excellent video and would love a series on dental issues! My 'before bed' brush is using an interdental brush in larger gaps, flossing, then a brush with a sensitive toothpaste, spit and no rinse. I have done this routine since I was 17 and ten years on, I've still got all my own teeth, have never had a filling, and only have minor sensitivity issues with cold food. Fingers crossed it continues to work for me! Thank you to Dr Mace for the brilliant advice. I had been told to avoid mouthwash (likely due to it washing away the fluoride) but it's nice to know I can buy a bottle again for a quick refresh after a meal!

Thank you so much for this video! I found it very difficult to watch because phobia, but it has made a lot of things clearer that will help me look after my teeth better than I have been. There were too many people in my childhood for whom good dental health was a Moral Issue, and as a result struggling with it has often left me with feelings of shame, so to hear you both discussing openly things I would be embarrased or ashamed to ask a dentist (even assuming the unlikely event that I could get an appointment!) has been unbeleivably helpful.

I wondered if you could ask about the alleged links between oral hygiene and mental health/ other health issues, which is something I’m pretty sure I’ve come across before. Thanks.
@DrJamesGill
@DrJamesGill 4 месяца назад
Only in the sense that when mental health suffers, often personal hygiene can suffer too HOWEVER there was a very interesting study last year about poor dental health CORRELATING with increased cardiovascular health risks Obviously correlation doesn’t equal causation, but I’m sure someone will be looking into it further to try to establish if there is a causal link
@starfishgurl1984

Thank you this was very informative! I have sensory processing disorder and as a result have a lot of issues with my gag reflex and chemical sensitivities/texture issues in my mouth so dental hygiene has always been hard for me. I had a retainer followed by four years of braces between elementary school, junior high, and high school and I also had my wisdom teeth removed but otherwise it’s just been my electric toothbrush and floss heads that snap onto a toothbrush handle that I struggle to use as much as I should that have been a part of my dental hygiene routine. Thankfully at least due to my sensory/texture issues I hate most sugary foods and drinks so I haven’t really had to worry about cavities on top of that and I do make an effort to at least try to brush once a day at a minimum to do something so I’m not lacking completely.

Dental hygeine is mostly about the toothpaste providing some level of grit (it can be microscopic, you don't need chunks) and soft bristles to move it around. This dislodges the bad stuff if you brush correctly. Use mouthwash to kill off bacteria that may hide out in small gaps you cannot reach/see.

I tend to like organic things from the healthfood store and can safely say: the dry charcoal toothpaste was the most disgusting thing I ever tried 😅 it literally tasted like soap. I actually found Colgate tooth powder - light for hiking and one less thing to worry about in airport security. Not for every day. Thanks for this vid.
@DrJamesGill
@DrJamesGill 4 месяца назад
The thing is, I’m 100% behind the concept of whole foods, and reducing processed foods. But we also need to keep on mind that organic doesn’t necessarily mean safe. Cyanid is an organic for example I’m just really cautious about things being labelled as safe when actually they are merely organic Although I do hurriedly highlight that you didn’t say “natural”, so I think it’s more likely we’re actually on the same page 😊 I’ve not heard of tooth POWDER, that is definitely something I’ll look int, might be a good one for my next expedition!

The thing I've heard against fluoride is that there's a very high cross-over of regions where fluoride is used and regions where people have dementia - I don't buy it 100% of course, as there's myriad things that also cross-over in the same regions. But just in case (and because it is disgusting), I don't drink tap water. Gravity clay filter only!
