For about 5 years now, I have been consistently capturing operational steam locomotives of the former Denver & Rio Grande Western, and just recently I have been able to capture the majority of the locomotives that operate (and operated) at both the Durango & Silverton and Cumbres & Toltec. To celebrate this I compiled together my favorite captures of each engine into one video. Enjoy!

You gonna need to get 491 and 346 (She's not operational right now, but was untill late 2021, and she's only out because of the 15 year mandated maintenance)

What will happen to 497 in the future?

depends if C&TS is willing to fix its serious boiler flaw

Possible chance will run again, but it seems the 492 has been chosen for restoration instead, despite the 497 having less missing parts.
@RioGrande486

For now, she will continue to be on display. Hopefully one day the C&TS chooses to fix her so she can run alongside 492. If not, hopefully some volunteers will restore her, or maybe she could return to the Durango & Silverton after all these years and they’ll fix her up. Who knows? Maybe one day I’ll have enough money to fix her myself with a group of volunteers and she’d see steam again for many years to come!

@@HinckleyBranchRailfan 11 months late but yup. 492 was chosen because it had a newer boiler (1948 iirc as opposed to 497's C-41 boiler). They've mentioned that if the need arises aka traffic rises high enough they'll restore 497 and give it a new tender (as 497's current tender, in true K-37 fashion, is going to the 492).

487's whistle is oddly beautiful with its high pitch. Reminds me of EBT 17's fouled three chime.

Not anytime soon. However, the C&TS recently announced they want to restore #492.

@@ArkansasLocomotiveWorkshat’s a great locomotive to pick because It’ll fill the gap in between the already operating engines 491 at the Colorado Railroad Museum, in Golden and the 493 on the Durango and Silverton that is actually a great idea to choose an engine with an in between the number of the two already operating K37 locomotives

@@TexasRailfan21-RailfanRyanThat really wasn't the reason. 492 is simply in better shape than 497.

Narrow Gauge American short line content would be so awesome to have. The Train Simulator classic from Dovetail has two narrow gauge routes from a dev named Smokebox Simulations. Clear Creek and Rio Grande Southern.

such a shame that most of these have been converted into oil burners.

@RioGrande486
@RioGrande486 Год назад
I mean sure, it kind of ruins the tradition of coal fired steam locomotives, but being converted to oil burners is better than starting another 416 and not being able to run ever again. So, yeah, just be thankful they’re operating.
@ArkansasLocomotiveWorks

@@RioGrande486 It's not ruining a tradition. It's just embracing new technologies and keeping the locomotives in active service.

What happened to 478? Why doesn’t she run ?
@RioGrande486
@RioGrande486 Год назад
She was going to be traded to the C&TS for 483 back in 2015, but the trade never went through, so she was taken out of service in 2016. I recently talked to an employee and he said that the railroad is still deciding on whether they’re going to restore 478 or 486 to operating condition first. Hopefully both of them are back in steam soon!
