The interim director of the Dept. of Transportation and Infrastructure said it's a right-of-way issue, or a matter of property takes and reducing housing inventory.

If there's room for more than one lane of traffic in either (or both) direction, then there's room for a dedicated bike lane in lieu of that lane of traffic. Yes, that will adversely affect vehicular traffic...but that should be viewed as a benefit, not a bar. If there's only room for one lane of traffic in each direction, consideration should still be given to removing one lane and making vehicular traffic unidirectional.

Thanks for covering this topic. Denver has grown so much, the only viable option left for moving everyone efficiently is taking away car lanes for buses, bikes, and micromobility. There's just not enough space for cars anymore.

Been proven over and over around the world, reducing car lanes and making more safe sensible bike lanes encourages people to take their business to those areas. People feel safer and the noise is dramatically reduced, cities are not loud traffic is loud, and every city large and small around the world need to start encouraging less fossil fuel vehicles. Encourage those folks to see how they do it in the Netherlands.

What I see when I look at a map of Denver I see a lot of *neighborhoods* that are made to be hard to drive through that could be made easy for bikes by using shortcuts. I also see lanes that are wide enough for current traffic where I think the city could just shift the lanes and provide parking on only one side using the parking lane as a barrier. I think Denver could establish good bike routes using what we have now, but with smart planning on lane markings and smarter intersections.

If New York City can install hundreds of miles of proceeded bike lanes. I’m 100% confident that Denver can do the same. It’s not a lack of space, it’s the intern Dept of Transportation director unwillingness to give road space to cyclists. Hopefully the people of Denver will remove this unqualified person from their role

Dutchie here there is always space for bikes sometimes you may have to move some stuff around and be creative but there is always space, especially when you consider how much it reduces car congestion. take 1:40 all you need to do is move the car parking spaces to in between the trees. it saves you a whole car lane, maybe 2(depending on what is on the other side) which can be used for a protected bicycle lane on each side So, yeah, i call BS on these claims of there not being enough space

this could have been addressed back in 1994 when the population of the front range boomed after a certain Northridge quake. push it off to the next administration, well there isn't anywhere to push anymore. the streets were already clogged and now there needs to be more lanes. Congestion Charges Work Wonders.

Take away space from cars!!
@kailahmann1823
@kailahmann1823 Год назад
step one: remove multiple lanes. step two: reduce lane width. step three: move parking between the trees or remove it at all. …if all of this fails, reduce the speed limit to "bike speed" (in Europe we usually use 30 kph aka ~20 mph) and have a shared road. This however must be combined with very narrow lanes (

Space is only a problem when you value cars too much. Example, take away on street parking suddenly you have room for a bike lane.

Well done. Thanks for this story and calling the interim director out on his unfortunate viewpoint of what transportation should look like. Hope city leadership is paying attention.

Why don't cyclists obey the rules of the road like car drivers do. Cyclists don't signal or stop at stop signs or red lights.
@markovermeer1394
@markovermeer1394 2 года назад
Cyclists have a much better view on what is happening on the street than car drivers. Besides, speeding-up your bike takes more effort than pressing the speed pedal. The serious question is: why are there stop signs and traffic lights for bikes: can the city not create bike routes which give bikes and pedestrians separate routes without noise and car exhaust? Many (dense) cities in Europe manage to arrange this with very pleasant results.

Neither do cars whats youre point? At least when a bike rolls a stop and takes a right turn they dont kill a few thousand people a month in North America. More cyclist are hurt by cars hitting them then they are from say hitting a sign post, pothole, a wall or a person walking combined

Yeah, I've never seen a car run a red light or speed through a school zone, or drive literally on the sidewalk, or roll through a stop sign, or drive on the wrong side of the street... give me a break! The difference is, when a person on a bike does this, other people are not at risk. There is no comparison to the possible damage caused by a massive multi-ton tank. If you choose to get through a city in a sensory inhibiting death machine, you carry much more responsibility for everyone's safety as a result.

When cyclist start having to license and insure their bikes then they can start taking more space. Even in your own footage the most I saw was 3 bikes at one point. There arent enough cyclists using the space as is to justify taking space from cars.

Ah yes a video highlighting how terrible our bike lanes are doesn't show as many bikes as cars. In related news I didn't see anyone at the park today we should replace that with parking too.
@markovermeer1394
@markovermeer1394 2 года назад
Probably it is too noisy to film during rush-hour. But remember: 3 bikes replace 3 cars, so even with a small number, you reduce the congestion for cars a lot when there is much traffic.
@julianpowers594

Why would you need a license to ride a bike? It’s rather hard to kill someone with a bike. Pretty easy to kill several people at once with a car.

@@julianpowers594 I did not mean that kind of liscence. I meant like a plate on the vehicle, basically paying a tax to go road, or in this case bike lane, upkeep matenience construction etc... Like car owners do.
