When a person is blind (or partially blind), they aren't always aware of that fact... which can lead to the symptoms of Anton Syndrome, where the person may try to prove that they can see by confabulating with their imagination about what they believe that they can see!

My book, which expands upon Anton-Babinski Syndrome and all of the videos in the The Ways Your Brain Can Break playlist, is available now! a.co/d/4zXaocz

I've heard about the opposite syndrome, too-people being able to see, and even reacting to what they see, but thinking that they're blind. The brain is an intricate system, and this is never more obvious than when things go a little wrong.

My vision goes blurry sometimes but there's no issue they can find. It's scary but knowing it's not real reduces the anxiety that comes with it. A few deep breaths and I'm fine. But I was certain for years that something was wrong with my eyes. Personally I think it's a trauma thing- I trouble with my eyes refocusing between light and dark and would have to stand still for a bit so I didn't faint but it was because I was malnourished and I'm not anymore (haven't been in a decade). I think the fear that came with that real issue has stuck around and pops up when I'm extra stressed now.

Yes, I believe you are referring to "blindsight." I explain blindsight in the chapter on Cortical Blindness in my book: "Incredible Consequences of Brain Injury: The Ways Your Brain Can Break." Knowing me, I'll probably make a video about it at some point, as well!

Wow, that is interesting! The man in the wheel looked a bit sad while looking out the window. I wonder what he believed he was seeing

Great video as always. ^^ I assume Anton Syndrome might in part be driven by the fact that someone with great visual deficiency could still be able to navigate their home somewhat well just by sticking to mental imagery and imagination, thus falsely affirming themselves that they can see well.

Superior mental imagery (hyperphantasia) is definitely a plausible part of this!

I understand that this means people are at high risk of getting into accidents. But how are they still managing at all? If nothing can be seen anymore wouldn't you die of dehydration within days not ever finding the real watter bottle.. I get that you know your own place but if true vision is entirely lost I imagine you'd have more problems than occasionally bumping into things. My friend and I, (medicine and psychology students) are fascinated and baffled as we are trying to find a source that describes what they do perceive of their environment at all yet it doesn't seem to be described. Idk if I am managing to make myself clear. Unless it always comes down to the described overlap? But if true vision is entirely impaired.. How do they even get out the door?

You got it all wrong, surely they are just seeing a different branch of spacetime! (/s)
