Russell Crowe won nearly every major award in 2002 for his performance to A Beautiful Mind, but then he lost the Oscar to Denzel Washington for Training Day. In this video, I break down that year's Best Actor race and discuss the reasons why Washington defeated Crowe for the award. #oscars #academyawards #denzelwashington #russellcrowe #willsmith #seanpenn #tomwilkinson #bestactor #brianrowevideo

For me personally, I think it’s stupid that both Shrek and The Lord of the Rings the Fellowship of the Ring lost Adapted Screenplay Oscar to A Beautiful Mind. Goes to show that the Academy prefers rewarding a typical Oscar bait biopic than an animated film or fantasy film in that category.

@kareninacarado

Yes, this is so true. He was not nominated for a BAFTA for his recent work in The Tragedy of Macbeth, although he made into the shortlist. I’ve thought the BAFTAs would eat it up since it’s a Shakespearean adaptation, but nope. There are also conspiracies and theories that the BAFTAs don’t like Denzel simply because they obviously prefer the Black Brits, and there are even accusations that the recent influx of Black British actors taking over Hollywood alarm some Hollywood insiders, especially the likes of Denzel, Morgan Freeman (who also doesn’t have a BAFTA nom), Samuel L. Jackson, etc.
@PrincessLioness

@@kareninacarado This is an interesting theory that I’ll look into. Denzel vs. Crowe is another Oscar race that was affected by previous years. Had Al Pacino won for Michael Corleone in The Godfather Part II, which we all know he should have as I consider the greatest performance in Cinema history, Denzel certainly would have won for Malcolm X, giving him 2 Oscars. If Denzel had 2 Oscars going into 2002, Crowe probably would have won back-to-back Best Actor Oscars because I don't believe they would have given Denzel a third Oscar for Training Day. I also agree if Tom Hanks beat out Crowe the year prior, Russell would have won for A Beautiful Mind. I think the possibly of giving Hanks a third Oscar ended up tipping it to Crowe. Also Crowe being the lead in the eventual Best Picture winner helped him out as well. That in turn ended up screwing Denzel's Hurricane chances in 2000 when he lost to Kevin Spacey, as American Beauty ended up winning Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Original Screenplay among others. Lots of scenarios to play with here.

Although it is shocking that no black actress has won Best Actress since Halle Berry. As a black man, I don't really think any has been undisputedly deserving since with the exception of Viola Davis not in 2012 (Meryl Streep deserved it don't @ me) but in 2021 for Ma Rainey. She did exactly the same thing Jessica Chastain did this year but even better. I was so mad she lost to Frances McDormand who everyone knew was going to win another Oscar anyway for producing Nomadland.

I thought they were going to do it to mitigate the backlash from Chadwick Boseman losing to Hopkins (where Hopkins for the Father was so deserving no doubt). Viola already had enough love from winning SAG, that win from McDormand was just unexplaineable to me. Maybe it's too early since it's only from 2021 but perhaps you can make a video about that unpredictable Best Actress race of 2021.

Denzel is my favorite of the three actors, though I love all of them, but I would have given it to Sean. I think Denzel won because of the timing with Poitier and Berry, I Am Sam was not very popular, and because Crowe won the previous year. Yes, perhaps the Oscar was Crowe's to lose, but too much time was spent examining the musical chairs of previous Oscar nominations while other factors at play were completely missed. Not enough credit is given to Denzel's performance in Training Day and the impact of seeing him play against type. The main things that dominated Oscar talk that year were Beautiful Mind as that year's potential big winner, Halle Berry's controversial and gutsy turn in Monster's Ball (the iconic sex scene), and Denzel's villainous performance which was completely different from the upstanding characters he usually played. I think it's honestly one of the real reasons why Tom Cruise did Collateral a couple years later. The Governors and larger Academy body saw their chance to hit two birds with one stone: 1) have Beautiful Mind be the sort of Oscar bait drama fit for media headlines as the big winner of the night while also lining up 2) another water cooler moment in the chance to make Oscars history with two black lead actor wins. In fact, that's what happened. the trifecta of Poitier's honor and Washington, and Berry as leading black actors firmly accepted by the Academy became the dominant post-Oscars headline. The Academy knew having Denzel & Halle win together would be more impactful for their institutional history and generate more media buzz than Crowe, the Australian who already won, winning his second Oscar. I remember the sentiment at the time was all about the Oscars making history at the turn of the century. Halle's world class beauty was inescapable & her turn in Shonda Rhimes' Dorthy Dandridge tv movie was seen as Oscar-worthy. Instead, she won the Emmy and you could tell the Oscars had found their moment to make history with Monster's Ball. Denzel was seen as a revelation, by far the best black male actor in the business. Again, the Academy was waiting for the moment to award him in the Lead Actor category. The two superstar actors had momentum on their side given the quality of their previous work, those nominated performances, and the chance to make Oscars history with the right nominees (Will Smith was still seen as too much of a movie star). It was a more tempting narrative than a bad boy foreigner winning his second consecutive lead Oscar.

Oh I remember this year so well. I had bet on Crowe. Bc of stats and such, but I really think that BAFTA incident really sunk him. Bummer, since I agree that this was his deserving performance. Denzel was brilliant as well but I still would’ve picked Crowe. Tantrum or not. The Supporting Actor race, I feel was a little closer than perhaps then you suggested. Ian McKellen had a lot of residual goodwill leftover from his Best Actor nod 3 years prior got Gods and Monsters, which many still feel he should’ve won for. That and the SAG win. I don’t think it was until the mid 2000s that BAFTA really started being a true bellwether for Oscar prognostication. Broadbent had won Supporting Actor for Moulin Rouge while his Iris turn was in Lead. (As was McKellen, interestingly) That and genre bias cost McKellen one of most deserving wins in history. Denzel will surely win another down the line. He should’ve won for Malcolm X!

Really good video sir! I would like to add a fifth reason for your reasoning, if it is not too impertinent. 🙏 I can't take credit for it because I remember reading about the following hypothesis in a newspaper article, by a one of the most important film critics in our country (I am in Uruguay) from that time. I remember reading about that the week after the 2002 award show. This man hinted that, because of the events of 9/11, the Academy had been inclined to award a film with a positive tone and the topic of courage, a film like A Beutiful Mind that enacted family values and coping with adversity. And following the same reasoning, he adjudges that this humor or feeling had been transferred to the Academy and therefore had given those three awards to actors from the African-American community: Berry, Washington and Poitier. As if the liberal minds of the Academy voting body were saying: "We suffered a great loss but, hey!, here we are rewarding three members of our community, minority as they are, because we are good people." I don't know why after so many years I still remember this and maybe this critic was stretching the idea too much. But perhaps there is something true about that today, now that after so many subsequent years in which we have seen how politics, social and economic issues have a direct correlation with what the Academy rewards. (I.E., the Me Too Movement, the Harvey Weinstein situation, the African American and Asian communities being more represented, etc.) Just a thought! Also, love that you named BKW cause I follow that one too 😉

Russell Crowe should have won for a second year in a row, while Denzel should have won Best Actor for either Malcolm X or The Hurricane. But due to Russell Crowe having that incident at the BAFTAs, those who were in favor of voting for him to receive his second Academy Award seemed to think about looking elsewhere and since Washington didn’t have a Best Actor Oscar at that time, they thought he was a good alternative to receive the award. Plus Crowe had an Academy Award at the time the year prior, as well as the other reasons you gave for Crowe losing. I’m glad both men have Academy Awards though, but it’s unfortunate how sometimes a certain incident or two could make it so that an award that seemed in the bag is now in jeopardy, though the award should be based on one’s performance or work that’s being looked at and not so much the person and what they do in their life, mistakes and all. I’m glad Casey Affleck won for Manchester by the Sea as he gave the best performance of that year IMO, and while he’s been accused of inappropriate behavior, of which the details are murky since it was a civil suit and so we just know the jest of what’s said to have happened, Affleck’s past of what he may have done shouldn’t effect his chance of winning an award that they’re up for and should win. Denzel Washington was great both years though and he continues to do great work to this day. Great video Brian, take care!

Haven’t seen Gladiator, so I cannot comment on Russel Crowe’s performance, but it’s hard to imagine he delivered a better performance in that movie than Tom Hanks in Cast Away. I think that’s his best performance. I think Tom Hanks lost considering I guess the Academy wasn’t ready to give him a third Oscar so soon. However, I think Russel Crowe should win for A Beautiful Mind though. I think the first Lord of the Rings movie should have won Best Picture and Director and Russel Crowe for Best Actor in A Beautiful Mind. It's strange to put this in a video that's 7 months old, but it feels like the Oscars are always chasing their tails. Meaning there are a large number of awards that are given to amazing actors in great roles, but perhaps not the greatest role/acting job of that specific year, to make up for a role that, in hindsight, should have been rewarded. And I'm not sure there is anything that can be done about it. Plus, there are always outside factors that contribute like it being "time" for an actor/actress after several nominations and no win (Can we please give Amy Adams an Oscar?), momentum, tantrums/scandals (oh Russel, you are your own worst enemy), etc. Having said all that, I don't hate this win at all. I recently (within the last year) saw some RU-vid commentary regarding Denzel's character in this movie and how "chilling" it was. It's not just against type, it's against type and and a magnetic performance. I have never randomly come across retrospectives of Crowe's character in a Beautiful Mind or Sean Penn's in I am Sam (unless it's a career retrospective of the actor) but I have, on more than one occasion over the years, stumbled upon critiques and discussions of this particular character and this particular role. I'm not someone who reviews or critiques movies, but I agree with a few commenters below that I remember THIS role of Denzel's to this day rather than the other best actor performances that year. Having watched this video I remember watching and quite liking a beautiful mind, but when I think back on great performances of oft-nominated performers, your Tom Hanks, your Russell Crowes, Your Denzels, Your Afflecks, Your Clooneys, Your Bradley Coopers, etc...out of the hundreds if not thousands of Oscar worthy performances by men in the last 30ish years, This role still stands out to me. So yeah, not too sad about it. As a random final thought, I have been watching your videos lately and I so enjoyed one of them about Hilary Swank. She is one Oscar winner that in my opinion, won both times she "deserved" to win, meaning neither was a "Sorry we messed up by not giving it to you for X performance 3 years ago." Or a "You've been nominated 12 times! It's time for your Oscar now " wave of excitement (I imagine Glenn Close will get her Oscar eventually and I just hope it's not one of these. She could fall into either category, honestly).

As Ive said before, the Oscars are about narratives and politics - its never at face value. I thought Washington played a generic tough guy, who was frankly unlikable in Training Day. But it was about time he won and it fit the race narrative of honouring him the same night as Poitier and Berry. I thought Crowe was incredible in A Beautiful Mind and I grew to really care about his character. But he had won the year previously, and since Washington hadnt won in that category yet, the Academy decided to honour him instead. This is why the Oscars bugs me. Its like they want to honour someone who is overdue so that means someone who is actually worthy has to miss out, and then they get honoured later when someone else will miss out. They do know they have something called an Honorary Oscar, right, that they can hand out for someone's career work?
@mania4270
@mania4270 2 года назад
Stop its all just theories. Washington won because he's the much better actor and gave the better performance. Which is why his performance is still talked about in training day while nobody even mentions or remembers a beautiful mind. Its part of that corny era where a big celeb would play a mentally challenged to win an oscar. Not unlike this current era where stars "method" act to hopefully win Oscars. Denzel's Alonzo Harris has become synonymous with crooked cop roles. Totally reinventing the undercover cop genre. Also lord of the rings should have won over A beautiful mind.

@@mania4270 I will admit that Washington is the better actor, but Crowe's role in ABM had much more range and he had to do more in that role. He played a character over multiple decades, from him as a genius mathematician, to someone suffering from schizophrenia and how someone interacts with people in good ways and bad. We all have different opinions and I personally got more from Crowe's performance.
@B.Arthur
@B.Arthur 2 года назад
@@mania4270 The Academy Awards are very rarely about who is “the best actor” in the general sense - that question is actually entirely irrelevant when presented with five specific performances to choose between. If they were supposed to give acting awards based on the performer’s general reputation, history, and body of work, they wouldn’t be nominated for specific films. A great example is just this year - if they cared about which of the five men nominated for Lead Actor was “the best actor” in the general sense, Will Smith simply would not have won. He won because they voted for the performance that stood out to them the most - not because they hold him up as being an implicitly “better actor” than Denzel/Javier/Benedict/Andrew. I agree with your characterization of A Beautiful Mind, it’s aged extremely poorly - as one of many poorly-conceived vehicles for a big-name star to show off their talent by playing a disabled person for some clout. (I Am Sam and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape are some of the other ones that have always stood out to me, glad to hear Penn invoked in the video.) I’d also like to add that A Beautiful Mind is USUALLY invoked nowadays for another reason - for removing any trace of Crowe’s characters’ homosexuality. Again, the film has aged very, very poorly. Part of the reason I wanted to respond to your comment though is your invocation of “the method.” It belies a misunderstanding of the history of that style of acting, and of the era of film performance we’re currently living through. Hollywood and their media’s obsession with Stanislavsky’s technique ebbs and flows every few years, often provoked when someone (usually on a press tour) uses “the method” to justify questionable behaviour during the making of a film, leading to another cycle of stories about how wacky and unpredictable and unstable actors are. It’s widely misunderstood by the public as some eccentric and specific ritual that nearly every actor follows for nearly every role, something that consumes them both on set and in their personal lives, but that’s simply an incorrect interpretation. The crux of “the method” is to train actors to recall real emotional experiences, and to use those authentic feelings from their own lives to fuel and drive their performance. The method was obsessed with intellectualizing everything, and demanded psychological realism above all else. That’s it. It first became popular in the 1950’s thanks to the work of Montgomery Clift, James Dean, and especially Marlon Brando, and was absolutely essential to Hollywood’s evolution toward realism, and away from the stiff, polished, and practiced “traditional” performances / productions of Hollywood’s golden age. It’s current (seeming) ubiquity is explicitly because of its explosive growth in popularity in the second half of the 20th century, and (unsurprisingly) the landscape of modern prestige performance has change A LOT since 1950. I say this because your interpretation that modern actors who play real life figures in Oscar-bait movies are all using “the method” is flat-out wrong, but it keys into something extremely fascinating going on in the world of acting today - another shift on par with the one Clift/Dean/Brando lead in the early 50’s. A move AWAY from the unrestrained authenticity and personalization of the mid-century “method” - and a distinctive turn TOWARD performance as “transformation and immersion.” It’s more like high-end animatronics now, we care a lot about seeing performers disappear into characters - instead of seeing the authentic person shine through the character, as was the priority of The Method during its heyday. And that’s the ultimate point I would make to distinguish from the classic “method” and what we see now. The method was not interested in hiding an actor, it demands they let go and honestly expose the deepest and most vulnerable parts of themselves in service of the character. That is an entirely different order of performance than the fully immersive, detail-oriented, voice/costume/make-up induced technical transformation, that we love to hail now. Our current moment is as antithetical to “the method” as “the method” was to classical golden age star acting. I would argue the codifiers of this trope are probably Meryl Streep and Daniel Day Lewis - although having debuted during the 70’s, it’s clear they were initially trained in that space of psychological intensity and authenticity. I’m thinking specifically of their more transformative roles in films like Sophie’s Choice, A Cry in the Dark, The Iron Lady, Lincoln, and My Left Foot. Or even performances like Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything - films where even a well-known performer can thoroughly disappear into their character work. I’ve been a theatre actor since the mid 2000’s, and have had the privilege to study Stanislavsky’s techniques, and the decades of acting theory and work that came after him. It’s dismaying to see his style evoked so casually (and often) by people who don’t really understand that it is now a piece of history - something that informs the foundational training of almost all new theatre actors, (myself included), but is also deeply connected to, and inherently a product of, it’s birth and boom in the middle of the 20th century. It is not the entirety of acting theory on its own, and it is absolutely not the gold standard for prestige excellence anymore. You’re in the comments of a film youtuber, and she’s literally namedropped in the video, so I’ll assume you’re familiar with The Best film RU-vidr, Be Kind Rewind. One of my favourite things about her channel is that she accidentally created a rather comprehensive history of The Method’s explosion and decline in Hollywood, as she addresses its impact, and evolution, and slow death/metamorphosis, in a number of her videos. If you, or anyone else, is interested I’d highly recommend these ones for a little more insight into what the method actually WAS, and how it differs dramatically from what we are living through today. This episode focuses on Vivien Leigh’s second Oscar win - but it also recounts the production of, and Oscar campaign for, A Streetcar Named Desire, a hugely historically significant film - it made Brando a star, killed the Hays code, and served as an explosive and irrefutable follow-up to Monty Cliff’s opening volley on behalf of the method in Hollywood. It also examines how Leigh, one of the finest classical actors ever, interacted with her costars, all of whom were early Method successes in Hollywood. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mEWWxAVthyA.html This episode examines Sissy Spacek’s Oscar win, and dissects the Oscars (and the industries’) increasing reliance on biopics/true life stories, and the immersive prestige performance style of today. This is the episode that does the most to unpack how our idea of great acting has changed (and has been changing) in the decades since Brando was young. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QbCW_Kwfhcs.html And this episode examines Anne Bancroft’s Oscar win, specifically contrasting her youthful, modern method approach, with classic film stars like Bette Davis and Katharine Hepburn. The insights provided by this one will be invaluable, Anne was a supremely dedicated student of the method, and is in many ways emblematic of how revelatory this style felt in the early 60’s. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-URwdDUt6pCA.html

For me still Russell Crowe's performance still is the best of that year and maybe of his career. Unfortunately the win of Halle Berry and Denzel Washington in the exact same year when Sidney Poitier was honored for his lifetime achievement gives that triple triumph an awkward taste. Though I find Washington pretty cool in Training Day and Russell may have spoiled his chances himself with his temper, I think that Berry's performance was not worthy of an Oscar (this historic moment should have had happened 16 years earlier for Whoopee Goldberg in "The Color Purple") . But imho there were many strange choices: "A Beautiful Mind" winning over "The Fellowship of the Ring", "Amelie" not winning best foreign language picture. Jim Broadbent should have been nominated for "Moulin Rouge" instead of "Iris" (he won anyway) and Nicole Kidman for "The Others" instead of "Moulin Rouge".

Alonzo Harris and Maximus are more popcorn-chomping enjoyable performances that stand out on film, well suited for their respective actors as the vicious but charismatic corrupt cop and the betrayed stoic war hero, but neither were their very best work. When they each played their roles based on true-to-life individuals they both had so many more layers, were more vulnerable and relatable and made you forget about the actors portraying them. However A beautiful mind wasn’t a failure of a movie, it was really good and a massive hit but I do prefer that the Oscars gave it to Denzel, who’s lead performance I found to be stronger but ultimately isn’t a movie that the Oscars usually go with

Crowe was excellent in A Beautiful Mind, really deserved to win more, but in another sense it also would be unfair for him to win twice in a row and Washington never win for lead actor.

Denzel would be snubbed for the rest of his life. And it is long overdue.

Whilst reasons 1 to 4 are entirely valid, I think reason 5 was determinative in this instance. Russell Crowe’s behaviour at the BAFTAs was big news at the time and unquestionably arrested his stellar Oscar momentum. I bet you he regrets it to this day.

No contest. Crowe was robbed but then probably took it away from someone else when he won for gladiator because he didnt win for the Insider. This kind of thing happens. Denzel won for not winning a million other times. So Russell benefited one year and was a victim of it another year. Such is life in Hollywood.

But if Crowe had it timing 3 wins, then Washington had more votes difference

I still find it baffling how Naomi Watts failed to get into best actress. While I don't love Mullholland Dr. as much as others, it totally deserved WAY more recognition at the oscars. Personally her performance in that movie easily was the best that year, so I would have given Best Actress to Naomi Watts in 2002

Denzel beating Russell was a diversity award and the Academy not liking Russell Crowe. Also, Halle Berry was a diversity award that year, but her competition was weaker so I get that a little more.

Denzel washington only won the Oscar for Reason 5 and that makes his Oscar not look legitimate, but rather a corruption of the Academy that is obviously not Denzel washington's fault. Many wanted Denzel washington to win in 2017, but the reality is that the Academy saved Denzel washington's career by not awarding him since if he won it would have been the second consecutive Oscar that he had won illegitimately and corruptly.

My only thought on Will Smith's performance in Ali: if he only had abandoned trying to mimic Ali's accent, I would have believed his performance so much more, but it felt like an imitation than an embodiment. I am aware that he would have received backlash if he *didn't* use the accent, so he had an uphill battle, either way.
