Yes! This may sound harsh, but to leave such a beautiful song behind in an instrumental that (lets be honest) is dated in its composition, feels like a waste. Wish Martin would give new life to this song with a vocal and updated production.

I love Broken Frame, it doesn't matter that DM were very young and a bit naive at that time , the quality of Mart's composing was really good. With all my respect to DM I prefer to listen to their early albums than last ones.

Thank you Vaughan, that was very interesting. I'm in the minority that considers "A Broken frame" amongst Depeche mode's best albums but this particular track has never been a favourite from it. So much so that I couldn't even recall it from its title alone! Hearing you break this down on piano has given me a whole new appreciation for it as a composition and a sense of embarrassment for it never having registered that it has such an obviously strong melody.

Nothing to fear was my early absolute favorite on the A broken frame album. Martin made some really nice and unusual instrumentals up until the Violator era. - Another favorite is of course the wistfully sleepy and gloomy "Sibling", as well as the almost equally gloomy "Memphisto". Unusual and unique.

I received a certificate to the local vinyl store for my birthday, on 26th of May, 2022. Straight on the next day I went there to buy, as you can possibly guess, one of the Depeche Mode albums that I hadn’t yet owned on vinyl at the time. Out of all their albums that this shop had A Broken Frame was the one that I didn’t possess. I gave it a listen that very day in full, probably for the first time in 11 years, though Leave In Silence and The Sun And The Rainfall are some of my favourites from Depeche. Nothing To Fear was one of the compositions that I discovered - or I should better say rediscovered. A week later my friend came to visit me, we also listened to this album and she fell in love with this composition. I can’t say that I listen to it often, but it is indeed one of the best instrumentals that Martin has ever written within DM. Anyway, too much writing from me. You explain things very well, Vaughn! And of course your playing is great as usual. I have a feeling that Memento Mori will signify the return to melodism for DM, but we shall all see

Thanks for the vid on this very classy instrumental track from Martin, always loved it but your breakdown on piano to strip it back to it's basic parts and explanation of it's subtle complexities is always appreciated Vaughan. One can hope that the new album from them has at least 1 instrumental track and Sonic bridge between tracks as it's those little idiosyncrasies that surprise and delight and are almost a trademark of albums in the past of Depeche. It was totally absent with Spirit. Keep up the good work Vaughan, from NZ

It contains as you said a strange mix of complexity and completness like a full closed world in itself as a never ending loop which is as beautiful as a classical Bach melody or a mathematic demonstration. Back then I was stumped an instrumental song was on a synth pop album. Actually, would associate Alan to compose such music. I sometimes think Martin lied when he says he is not classically trained. 😁 But these days often looking back to the A Broken Frame album, I'm in amazement that a 17 yr old boy wrote those songs!

I never rated ABF, other than the 2 tracks, that immediately, stood out being , ‘The Sun & the rainfall’ and ‘Nothing to fear’, but listening to Marsheaux cover version, of the album, using modern production tech, really uplifted the ketchy production of the original, to show just how good most of the songs were. Their version of ‘Shouldn’t have done that’ being the highlight. Interestingly, the exception would be ‘Nothing to fear’ where the original production still holds up better than any cover, I’ve heard to date, imho.
