Depots in the Lower Peninsula! THis was on the way back to the UP and I did not have a tripod and everything was just off the cuff but I had so much fun and met so many nice people I will remember this Depot day forever! First stop was Port Sanilac to see my brothers paver I purchased three years ago. The Troop Kitchen Car had alot of work done on it and the whole display was very impressive! Then it was onto Vassar where as we drove into the Depot lot what I thought was a display starting moving! I grabbed the camera Jim uses and did the best I could! At the end of the video you hear a train horn but we did not catch up with it unfortunately! Then eventually it was Grayling-so much fun we didn't want to leave but the sky was getting blacker and we had many miles to travel yet before we got home! We even went to the ore dock in Marquette -two freighters and beautiful lights-that got us home after one in the morning but what a fun trip home!

Hey Nancy, thank you for the Vassar railroad clip. I live in Vassar. Back in the day we had two railroad companies that came through here. Thanks again. Dan Seney

Thank you for this tour of these depots that you found on your way home from the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, Nancy! I enjoyed watching this video. The two trains that you caught in Vassar and Grayling, Michigan were a bonus. The Delay In Block RU-vid channel has at least one video on the Lakestate Railroad.

Great video Nancy. I really enjoyed the scene in Grayling along the LSRC. It certainly was exciting to see the lights of that train off in the distance and glad you were able to see it too. That D&M caboose is also a beauty. Well done 👍🏻

The lady that runs the museum was called and she was so happy I was there taking video! She asked to please invite everyone to come and visit! it was time for the guys to go home so I didn't get to explore the museum but I will the next time! It occurred to me how many trains I have caught trains around the five o'clock hour!

That was nice of her to welcome you into the station. Does she watch your videos? Grayling was one those towns I always wanted to visit because of the D&M Railway.

As I've said before, I love all your videos. But, those like this one, that are different than your normal videos, are so interesting. I enjoy seeing everything in this video, as it's different than most other videos. Thank you, Nancy!

For some reason many of the Michigan Depots had an extra Flair to them perhaps because of the lack of roads in its day it was the meeting spot for everybody. When I look at an old official guide it's sad to see how much track has also been lost in the lower part of the state and while Big Industry did have a toe hold in some cities the amount of logging in later agriculture is staggering. Glad you're able to catch those two Freights on their erratic schedule. Even though the D&M is gone at least a train is still better than a right-of-way and Lake States has some interesting pieces of freight equipment

Well Nancy, since you brought up mention of the 1225, I had to respond. My husbands father worked for the Pere Marquette Railroad out of Wyoming Yard in Grand Rapids as a fireman during World War II, he exculsively worked freight and it is for certain that he fired the 1225, hence my husbands obsession with trains. And of course he has a replica of the 1225 on his layout. Thought you might be interested in this And by the way his dad had a railroad deferment so he didn't have to fight in the war, since they needed men to work the railroads. And of course we have taken an excursion behind the 1225.

I would be interested to hear of your brothers connection to the 1225 and a time line of his work on the locomotive

That caboose behind the station in Grayling looks like an ex PRR. car.

Deckerville is on the old Pere Marquette Ry line out of Bad Axe in the Thumb that at one time went into Port Huron (until the large lift bridge over the Black River broke). I think Huron & Eastern still operates the line to Croswell or so. The lead locomotive on the D&M train at Grayling looked like a "slug" unit, meaning no prime mover in it, just using electricity from the other locomotive to run it. I didn't know Lake States had any. This was the former New York Central line from Detroit to Lapeer to Vassar then Bay City to Mackinaw City that D&M and now Lake States operates most of (to Gaylord). I am guessing all the gondolas and bathtub gondolas on the train were from the scrap company in Gaylord on a long spur built to the west of the mainline south of town. At Vassar the PM crossed the NYC on its line from Saginaw to Port Huron which is still in place until Marlette or so and run now by Huron & Eastern, I think.

OK I'll be Back. Will you look at that now? It's been 4 days. Sure doesn't seem like that long. OK, fine video Nancy, thank you. I was wondering about the conical roof design some of the train stations use. In South Lyon there is a very specifically designed roof, and they call it the Witch's Hat Depot. I have seen several other train stations that have the very similar roof design. Maybe not exactly as tall, but they seem to desire a conical design. Have you ever heard of why? Google doesn't seem to know. ben/ from under the bridge.

Hey Miss Nancy! Cool vid, I found a channel of some cool folks up your way and they are called Liberty Farms on upper peninsula like you. I recommend you check them out. The narrow gauge rr they're building on their farm is cool. They use rolling stock you ride in and not on. They're Awesome 👍😎 Like you ma'am. I think you'll be glad I told you about them. Liberty Farms RU-vid 😊 😷🚕🛣️🌞😊✌️😁
