MedCircle psychiatrist, Dr. Domenick Sportelli, breaks down the genetics of depression in this video, what increases the likelihood, and when medication can help.
He also explains how to talk to a kid with depression about taking medicine for depression or anxiety. He explains in easy-to-understand terms the biological basis of depression, how serotonin works, how much a chemical imbalance actually makes a difference, how medication can accompany therapy, and more.

Taking an anti-depressant stopped my suicidal thoughts, but it did not give me anymore "air in my tires". I went right to the source of my depression and quit my job. I work from home now and am very happy.

Thank you, gentlemen, for a clear concise explanation of depression and medication. Depression is NOT a choice. No one chooses to be depressed. It is debilitating and can be life threatening. Although we have come a long way in treating mental health, we have so much more to go. The stigma of depression is holding us back. Maybe if we understood the brain better maybe we can treat mental health as if it’s a disease such as cancer or diabetes.

with our current level of technology, depression is now a choice. however, it's up to medcircle whether or not to expose the truth of this technology.

Ive suffered (and I mean suffer) with depression for years. I made it a point not to let or show it around my kids. I don't even say the word so as not to copy. My son whose 12 whose the spitting image of me in looks and personality (who is very sensitive and a deep thinker like me) has started cutting himself (not something I've done) and saying he's depressed and wants to die. It's blind sided me. Also I thought my depression was caused from losing close family members at a young age and various other things but as it turns out my grandmother who I've never met also had it. My point is this guy's spot on. I'll be getting my son lots of help and the schools involved. I wish there was a simple cure. It doesn't matter what you look like, what you've got or who you are, no illness discriminates.

The same goes for me. I am on the pills for almost 10 years (I was on and off then before as well) and they really help me get through. I realized that my father had it, his mother had it and now, my son 16 year old son had / has it (he was on the pills for 2 years and now he does not take them anymore and is fine). So, I truly believe, it is genetic. We are all sensitive, deep thinkers as well, so the predisposition is here. I hope your sone gets help and feel better. The pills helped me and my son tremendously. Unfortunately, my grandmother and my father turned to alcohol to "cure" this illness.

Uhhh giving young children medication... 🤦🏻‍♀️ I can’t even imagine. Its hard enough going through the process of taking psych meds as a 37 year old. I have been trying drug after drug for the last 8 years and have found very little relief. I would hate for a child to go through all the side effects to maybe find only slight relief. And no one is talking about the increased risk of suicide for under 18’s with meds (the black box warning). Most people on psychiatric medication, find some relief. Some. Most do not become completely ‘healed’. There should be much more focus on therapy for everyone but especially for children as a first course of treatment. The explanation of having a genetic pre disposition to mental illness is spot on, without a doubt. My mother had depression, my sister had depression. I have depression, anxiety and also a history of trauma.

I can tell that it is not just chemicals in the brain. I work with young children. I observe a lot of them who either depressed or need special care. Most of them need love and attention and right parenting. Abandonment and absence of love make them depressed since they dont understand how to cope with the feeling.

I’ve always felt so emotionally and had bad thoughts as a kid, then when I was bullied for 6 years I changed. I always felt sad, but later had severe depression and had suicidal thoughts everyday, and still do now. My family keep comparing their lives saying they had it harder, my friends left me. My mum was born with anxiety and had severe depression with me and I think that made it easier for me to develop depression and haven’t got better. I can’t stop thinking about death and wondering what happens if I die and wish the constant thoughts would just go away.

Same here, no matter how much i try to explain it to them they can’t seem to accept it, they keep telling me to go play sports or do stuff but the thing is this feeling won’t go even if I tried to lift the whole earth on my shoulders, I started to get sick of it and i even started to curse at them because of their stupidity and their pathetic jokes trying to cheer me up, if I only had some money I could go to some doctor to help me get away from this situation.

This doctor may be right or wrong, but I was infected with the genetic predisposition to depression, in short term I have major depression. It doesn't happen often, but randomly. Its literally impossible to avoid it no matter how good your life is and no matter how good people are too you. The negative and dark thoughts just creep through in you. I have both my father's genetics, which is laziness and anger, and my mother's depression. My mother got so depressed she went to the hospital for some treatment. Sadly I caught that disease and its very difficult to get through. And to the answer for the mans that says, does a child get depressed and the answer is yes. The symptons of depression were early stage for me. I am no doctor, but I saying this from memory and experience, I believe I was in 2nd grade when depression hit me hard, I got sick a lot, and sometimes I didn't want to do anything, I was silent all the time, couldn't pay attention in class and I cried a lot. In my family I am the crybaby of course. I couldn't explain what I was going through, at times I just want to cry for no reason at that age. Been living through that till now 19, but the strange thing is that at age 18 I started developing painful headaches when I'm feeling down. My parents say its stress and tbh I don't even know if its stress or not. The way I win against depression all these years is to go to my room in my bed and just let depression suck me whole, I cry for a bit, imaging the ways I die and how my family and people I know get affected by it. I start having thoughts of me being worthless, always cause trouble for my family, I'm the oldest brother and the worst one. All these negative thoughts crawling in me and I just let go through until i sleep for 15 hours and I wake up feeling new and motivated. Its been like that for years, but I'm getting more and more headaches and their getting more painful, my head I think is starting to get tiny bumps.

@@crizzloves2460 bro, I am sure I'll forget this comment existed, and this convo, but let me tell u that I can relate to you to a degree, that I think we've gone through pretty similar Depression life. I've had it for as long as I remember (I'm 17 now) and what u Said from "I cry for a bit" and onward, I can relate to all of that.... about the headaches tho, I haven't searched about it yet but I have it too and have had it for yearrrs, so I've developed it earlier than u. My guess is that it's cuz of stress and the hormones accompanying it. Have watched a video about how stress makes your brain get less sugar affecting your brain activity, and how stress and anxiety (technically depression since being depressed makes u have both stress and anxiety) affect 3 places of the brain, which specialise in memory related things. My guess is that my headaches are cuz of that, and that the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus are the places where I get those headaches (just my guess) especially the prefrontal cortex cuz whenever I'm stressed out, the front of my brain hurts me and I get destructive headaches. Also, how r u ? Any updates?

Maybe my experience dealing with depression can help you with the headaches, probably in every person symptoms have variation but in my case chemicals in the processed food trigger the headache in the temporal area. In specific the msg, monosodium glutamate, avoiding this chemical is difficult because is almost everywhere including in the natural form in some vegetables and fruits and meat. Trial an error to see which foods do not cause the problem helped me to resolve part of the problem, the other part was to search what medication for depression fitted in my case, then which dose. At this point I can say that have a better quality of life however is one process of everyday taking in account that every human being is different, that is the most fascinating. Hopefully this comment helps in something.

I find it unfortunate that they don't talk about the bad things with medicine (they may in other videos - but not here). Medicine is not a miracle-helper (notice im saying "helper" not "cure"). 1) Medicine has a ton of side effects for one 2) it's not guranteed to work for everyone and might even make your condition worse (with depression the medicine can lead to higher risk of suicide) 3) It's not necessary. This isn't always true - for some people it is, but generally speaking... it's not.

If you are given Prozac or it's cousins, young or old, watch out! Genetic predisposition sounds like a more scientific diagnosis. In practice it just means relocating the subjectivity back a generation. I don't know of many who actually got a big lift from pills like SSRIs.

@stephenpowstinger733
@stephenpowstinger733 3 года назад
I am sure SSRIs help a few people else they would have no value whatsoever and would be "snake oil". The problem is their success rate is overstated. The odds of them working are nowhere near the efficacy that some advocates claim. The result of giving someone a pill that "should work" or "works for most people" is that when the necessary six week trial is over and nothing happens that person is worse off than before. They could wind up feeling "not good enough" for the medicine..

Yep. So many factors involved and that need to be considered for diagnosing and medicating. Information needs to be clear and communication is key. Alot of people believe only the stigma behind medication and so called cons. There are different doses and a proper doctor will ensure they prescribe you the appropriate amount and manage this over a period of time to ensure you are taking the right amount, you may even experience a change during being on medication and require a lower or higher dosage..that is all normal and part of the process. The aim isn't to keep you on the medication but to help assist you in managing your current situation eg. depression...by enabling you to get so called back on your feet and in a healthier state of mind. There is nothing wrong with taking medication, just as Dr Dom gives the example of riding a bike with deflated wheels, it is simply making it easier for the moment until you get back to your healthier self. Just like psychology sessions, they are not designed to fix you but they are going to help and assist you in your journey of getting better.

Allopathic medicines will make you dependent on them and wil suppress brain activity. One shall constantly have depressive tendencies though not outright depressed. Homoeopathy on the other hand goes to the root of your biology and traces depression at the cellular/ genetic level and cures ones predisposition to depression.

People with depression this is for you. I was quite too extremely quiet. I cry when I'm alone. I push away those who I love and care about. No one cares about me not even my mother at a particular point in my life. I didn't want to do the things that interests me. But through all that hard times, don't depend on something to make you happy that drug or weed or anything, "you" are you don't let the drug make you, you the only person in this world that you can depend on, for example you having a bad day you think of a joke that you found funny you then laugh with "yourself". Like I figured out how to make myself happy by understanding me, I'm a caring person but don't talk about my feelings to anyone because I would then make them feel sad or they have empathy for me, didn't like that so I would rather ask and make them open up(not forcefully thou🙄), and it would make me feel better. I'm helping them although I'm not getting better by doing so but it makes me feel like I have a purpose by helping those who is depressed turning there frown upside down and when depression kicks in, making me feel worthless I just think of the good that I've done to bring me back, wishing to get rid of this "depression" I would give an arm and a leg to get rid of it. Just shows how bad it is. When I'm with my family or friends and we going outside having fun maybe go to the mall and as we walking I would fall back and change direction and let them continue while I be depressed alone and not kill the vibe they having🚶. Crying help's but what really helped me was to go for a walk, music is playing "DJ Kygo helps", something will make you smile on that walk wether it's a person, environment, anything. Please believe in yourself and make the most out of your life let depression stop you for that specific moment but not for the entire duration of your life, if it's difficult for you someone out there is willing to help lend a ear, and a shoulder to cry on. I know it's hard I have severe depression if you look at my father he does or probably did all the illegal drugs, almost died and countless attempts to commit suicide still continuing at this very moment. 😢. I really don't want you to feel like how I felt or how we as sad people take our life you know what mean. You are important to me you the only person that understands me I don't want to be alone.

RMZ 450 You know there are extremely successful people who make a lot of money that live in big fancy houses who went to big league schools & worked their asses off that suffer, right? Some people who put on brave faces every day & whose lives you probably turn green from envy of that struggle and you have no idea because you can’t see inside their brains? They’ve probably made better choices than you. You’re making the choice to watch videos on a brain disorder you know nothing about & judge people who suffer.
