Great presentation Sal, thx! I see you love you A1's, they are amazing flashes. There are many other reasons to use them over speed lights that you didn't mention... but I don't know why it takes your speed lights 5 seconds to recharge. My Canon 600's take only 3 seconds at full power with RECHARGABLE PowerX 2700 batteries. Maybe you tested with alkalines and if so why?
@SalCincotta1
@SalCincotta1 6 лет назад
yes - i can agree with you there... i tested with reg AA. Personally - i hate the rechargeable... at least in my experience... in the beginning they work great... but within a few dozen recycles... they dont seem to work as well or as long. so i stopped using them and went back to alkaline, but obviously not an issue for me at the moment. and i wasnt getting the same amount of shots fired at full power as the A1 gives. today - i have 6 A1s in the bag.

Can anyone enlighten (ha) me on something? In many of these photos (for eg.: there's the one at 30:40, the one at 39:25, the one at 48:30) the subject seems to be dramatically overexposed compared to the setting, which I find rather excellent... But it looks very weird, because little to none of the added light appears to spill into the environment. Anyone else notice how the subjects often don't appear to cast shadows onto the ground (see examples), and how the ground is not illuminated yet the feet are very much so? Is there a deliberate effort to remove these shadows in post to make it look like a composite?
@felixbelanger2659
@felixbelanger2659 6 лет назад
I'm only an amateur photographer so don't take my word for it, but if you have your light close enough to your subject, you can get some very strong light fall off between your subject and background. So I don't think that it involves that much editing. EDIT: one thing that I have just realized is that he often shoots two shots, one with the light and one without (so he can remove the assistant or stand easily) So it would be very easy to remove any light spill as well
@omnesilere
@omnesilere 6 лет назад
I'm almost certain he's using high speed sync, where he can use really fast shutter speeds that close down the ambient light which really makes his subjects that are lit up with really powerful lights stand out. What in impressed with is the utter lack of spill, 51:56 for example, but I'm assuming they dodge that down in editing in a bit.

Wait, so you can't use a 70-200 at 85mm to get the same look of a 85mm prime? You can't put the lens to 85mm and use your feet to move forward or backwards? Interesting !
@SalCincotta1
@SalCincotta1 6 лет назад
Rafeal Jackson correct. A prime and a zoom have very different optics. And will never look the same. Rent them and test side by side. In addition primes have a much wider DoF and will also look different.
@reuvenansh5231
@reuvenansh5231 6 лет назад
Great presentation! I think you meant primes have a "shallower" DOF. And to get that look with a 70-200 f 2.8 you need to move back and zoom in, so the compression gives a different look, but another point to consider is that to achieve the same bokeh effect with the 70-200 2.8 it's harder to connect/communicate with the client at that further distance. Using the 85 keeps you in closer
@SalCincotta1
@SalCincotta1 6 лет назад
Reuven Ansh correct sorry. Meant shallower. Point is. They look different. Very different. I use an 85 1.2 and a 70-200 2.8. I can stand same spot at 85mm and they will not look same. Primes are much better quality.
@faze1er
@faze1er 6 лет назад
Interesting, I must rent to see. From my experience the quality of modern day zooms aren't like they once were. Certain brands micro contrast and Bokeh render out of focus better. Also cameras make a slight difference as well, right? Does sensors matter or size of the sensor. What if I were using medium format? Am I just screwed if I don't have a 85 mm? Not trying to be a smart ass but I'm really curious and always open to thoughts or methods, etc...
@matrixmanify
@matrixmanify 6 лет назад
Reuven Ansh do you mean they look different because of the depth of field? Or do you mean even at 2.8 on both they look differently?
