In this video you'll learn how to control DOF -- Depth of Field in order to get blurry background for portraits or greater sharpness when you're doing group shots. It's important to understand how you can use aperture, zoom or creating distance between yourself and the subject can control the depth of field.
Equipment used in sample pictures.

Lenses Nikon D50mm f1.8G Nikon 85mm f1.8 Nikon 70-200 VRii f2.8 Nikon 24-70 f2.8 Tamron 24-70 VC 2.8 Tamron 28-75 f2.8 Tokina 16-28 f2.8

I think the same thing was explained by POUT on another video named "Photography Tutorial - FIRST Lesson! What is Aperture? " . Use single AF because you are focusing on a single subject. If you use full Auto AF the camera may try to focus something else.

a little negative for people who just bought a 650d, but im glad you mention its good for landscape and lowlight stuff at the end thats mainly why i got it.. but thanks for review , as my first DSLR i really dont find it a problem to press the zoom button to get focus points :-)

Hi, I am a true beginner. Thanks for making everything so easy to understand with DOF, aperture, lighting, etc. For 2 days straight I've been online searching for a way to achieve sharp subjects w/blurred backgrounds and I've been told that I cannot do this with my camera because it is a bridge w/ a small sensor (Fuji Finepix S4500). I did see where one guy said it doesn't matter what the camera is but basically knowing all that you teach here. Do you also agree? still trying to achieve this.

LOve your videos very concise information. Can you make a video on what backdrop and flash do you recommend for beginners like me. I want a good solid background that can last me a long time and a versatile flash for my Nikon D90. Thank you so much!

I don't have to read a book.. I went to school and Photography was my major. Not to mention , I've been doing it for a living for many years. You can have 3 photographers shooting the same subject. and get the same shot using different F/Stops. Distance from You and the subject is a factor when it comes how much depth of field...

I have both the T1i and T3 that me and my family purchased ages ago and we're still learning all the features. I've only really used the kit lens and I have noticed the pictures aren't that sharp as I was hoping. Granted, I don't know how to use the camera well, but what other lenses would you recommend? I only really take landscape/travel photography.

Great video, really nice use of examples. Quick question, where and how should I focus with different scenarios (single, 2-3 people, 6+, etc.) If I'm not mistaken, I should use the single centred focus point?

Really great video as per usual. Is there a real difference between zooming and just getting closer to the subject? For example say hypothetically you have a 20mm f2.8 prime lens and a 30mm f2.8 primes lens. If I were to frame my shot in exactly the same way would the depth of field be the same for both shots? Can anyone enlighten me? :p

Awesome! As i understand this ... Aperture is related to incoming light as well as Depth of Field Low aperture = more light & less depth of field High aperture = Less light & high depth of field can u pls confirm ?

Well,I'm a beginner and i got a question.I understand to make the F/stop lower when I wanna get a sharp subject with blur background,but the focus mode should be in MANUAL FOCUS or SINGLE-SERVO AF? Hope you can reply me in short moment ^,^ THX

I guess the main question I have is, during a group shot where is my focal point. Do I lock in on a face and then re-position or do I move the focal point around? Now that a have a camera with 39 focal points I feel I am over thinking everything.

Your whats known as book smart... I'm hands on and school taught... and common sense has to apply. I'm 52 and have practice photography since the mid 70s... where you have to develop your film and process prints and mount them... I've done it so long, the settings are in my head.. I know them . I don't need a light meter.. I invite you to my FaceBook. so you can compare your photography to mine. My clients say my photography is like viewing the world through my lens.... Facebook Tim Prez

To prove my point that depth of fields has nothing to do with F/Stop.. A telescope or binoculars have no F/stop "no aperture". But they all have focus and depth of field. If you focus on a subject closer to you. Everything at a distance behind the subject will be out of focus "Depth of field" It can be reversed .. If the subject is in a field of grass and a distance from you. As you focus on your subject the foreground is your depth of field and out of focus...
@timdawg747
@timdawg747 11 лет назад
Focal point and Distance control depth of field. F/Stop has nothing to do with Depth of field... F/Stop is a measurement of how much light is allowed in ... Functions like the pupil in your eye...The combination of Iso, Shutter speed and F/stop ,all contribute to a prefect exposure.. It's Math
