In this video I talk about how I select my camera setting based on the outdoor available light.
Instructions:
Aperture Mode Settings. You can do this in Manual mode as well.
#1 First set the ISO (for a Sunny day, pick lowest ISO, for cloudy start with ISO400)
#2 Select aperture or f/stop # (your desired depth of field) Group shot or solo portrait?
#3 Focus to see if shutter speed is fast enough
- If Shutter speed is fast enough, take the picture
- If shutter speed is not fast enough then increase the ISO to get to desired shutter speed OR open up your aperture to get to fast enough shutter speed.
#4 If you're ISO is already too high and shutter speed is just shy of "minimum shutter speed" then see if you can open up the aperture
Note: If your ISO is 100 or 200 and you're not getting fast enough shutter speed then you either open up your aperture OR increase the ISO to get faster shutter speed.

This really helped a lot. I cannot thank you enough. If you could I would love to have you do a more in dept video on exposure compensation than the one you did. Specifically in the various modes and how it relates to aperture mode and manual mode and why not shutter priority mode What you did was great. I would like to have more diverse and a deeper understanding and examples. For some reason I struggle with this. I have trouble moving the + or - in relation to shutter speed & aperture. Thanks

I have a question...I have a manual 50mm lens mounted to my D5000,unfortunately the only way it can be used on this camera is in manual mode, so I can't check my aperture speed in the aperture priority settings before I take my shot without mounting an AF-S lens first. Any ideas for me?I was following along in my settings with this video! You are so awesome and informative...thank you!

I loved the saturation of color and clarity I got indoors 50mm at 2.8, 1/60 iso 400! Yeah it was a picture of my daughter's still toy and I was sitting to take the photo, but hey...I liked the shot. It would be nice if I could shoot a person like that while I was standing too, but that will take some practice ;p

Hi - Thank you for a great video. A silly question on the picture you took with two kids (brothers). Where did you put your focus on the kids? the taller kid or the younger one? At the eyes? I'm a beginner and I always don't know where to focus, and one kid would turn out to be blurry :) Thanks

Nice Photo Display, But I felt they were a little Cold or Bue-ish. I choose my ISO first too. I try not to go beyon ISO 800, If I have to, then I need to add light. Thanks For Your Tutorial. ( Canon 7D )

How do you take a full body of a person and the backrounds still blurry? Do you use a aperture 2fstop to blur the backround but still have the full body of the person. Also what lens are you using to make the aperture 2fstop because im useing a SLR nikon d3200 with a 18-55mm lens and it can only go to 2.5 and its still not blurry

isn't there shutter speed settings that you can adjust manually? How do you check what shutter speed your getting? thanks

Yes, you can edit your video to reduce time of fill and replace it with substance. Your deilvery is well received though. State why there are no absolutes in Photography especially in manual mode. You are easy to listen to. A major factor in holding attention and an art in itself. I personally like your reference notes for all to see.

Hi, I have a Canon Eos Rebel T5 and whenever I lower the f stop or increase the shutter speed (to for example, 1/250 and f4.5) the picture becomes so dark that it's almost a black screen. Am I doing something wrong. Please let me know

would have been better if you mention how to choose correct white balance and picture style especially for portrait. Cuz you know, getting the right skin color is really a pain in the ass. all other things are great. subscribed and thumb-uped

Are you shooting Manual? Are you metering and if you are, are you doing in camera metering? What metering mode are using for portrait work? How do you meter in camera, do you set it on auto and go from there?

@PhotographersOnUTube Ok, my bad :). It's my understanding that you don't want to shoot portraits at 1/60 sec because this would cause motion blur. In low light situations for portraits, what's the slowest shutter speed you recommend a newbie like me to use before increasing ISO further?

You say don't do portrait on a shutter speed slow like 1/60 second but then the first example of the young girl, you took it with 1/60 second. Am I missing something here?
