My naive star trek friends would (before the Picard show) always praise Picard as THE best ST captain ever! Due to Picard being such an idealist. But this, and several other episodes of DS9, showed me that Sisko cared more about results than ideals (or morale). "Picard would never punch me!" "I'm not Picard." Savage!
@dolomaticus1180
@dolomaticus1180 29 дней назад
Well I would say he understood there had to be a balance between results, ideals and Morals. There are times you have to stand on ideals and not care about what can be lost. Other times results matter and you have to bend, which this episode alone showed both very clearly and also showed how furious Sisko can get too :)
@barryelverson9486

Picard and Sisko are cut from different cloths. Sisko is more engineer and NASA astronaut. Picard is more a scientist and classic explorer. Both are strong military. But Sisko is stronger.
@someguy999
@someguy999 28 дней назад
A couple of episodes meant to moralize ruined Picard for me. First, he had a chance to eliminate the Borg, but chose not to because he didn't want to sacrifice a single individual of the collective. That could have literally cost billions of lives. Second, he was a traitor and revealed the Federation's cloaking device to the Romulans. I understand they had a treaty, but the Romulans broke it so many times that I can't justify undermining the Federation. In the very least, it would have been more interesting if those two choices backfired on him and they made him deal with severe consequences. Taking the high ground isn't that meaningful if everything always works out in the end.
@gusty9053
@gusty9053 27 дней назад
They are the product of very different Starfleet eras (both in universe and in the writing room). Remember Picard had been a captain for many years in an era with Starfleet as top dog (they had children on active starships for crying out loud) when Wolf 359 happened. Sisko got to experience what a major defeat looked like first hand. Even if they had started the same Sisko would adopt a "harder line" and understandably so. The Dominion War would have only reinforced that trend.

I do think it's a small, but regrettable omission, to not give Garek a chance to be taken aback by the heel-face-turn of Sisko. "I thought humans of... /your/ type of character didn't do this sort of thing?" Something to that effect. Drawing an even finer point on the 'Eddington is forcing Starfleet to behave Cardassian in his quest to destroy Cardassians' commentary. The "poisons Cardi's only" thing really was a minor bit of lazy writing, trying to make Eddington seem rational...but they apparently forgot that terrorists are inherently hypocritical and lacking in introspection --there was no need to polish his morality for Sisko's arc to work.

The Siege of AR-558 Let me tell you something about Hew-mons, Nephew. They're a wonderful, friendly people, as long as their bellies are full and their holosuites are working. But take away their creature comforts, deprive them of food, sleep, sonic showers, put their lives in jeopardy over an extended period of time and those same friendly, intelligent, wonderful people... will become as nasty and as violent as the most bloodthirsty Klingon. You don't believe me? Look at those faces. Look in their eyes.

@@tombarnett937 It is a plot contrivance to have these weird things that only hurt cardis or humans, but Eddington is a great example of the Federation's "everyone wins because I'm so smart" attitude. He thinks that not only are his attacks completely justified, but also that they have created a landscape where (once completed) no-one can ever challenge the status quo again. It's like he thought so long and so hard to come up with his perfect solution and no-one would do anything he didn't expect. And that's the hubris of the Federation right there. Using amazing science to solve problems and then being shocked that someone comes along and smacks them right in the mouth.

Actually - and this is something I did not realize until watching Classic Trek again - Sisko did not commit a crime, according to Starfleet. Why? _General Order 24,_ which gives Starfleet officers the authority to destroy all life on a planet...And that wasn't a one-off, because it was referenced in two separate episodes, _Whom Gods Destroy_ and _A Taste of Armageddon_ .....Sisko is still a villain who got away with it, though, because he did it for personal revenge rather than operational concerns, and Eddington - while still a mutineer and criminal - was not wrong in his monologue to Sisko about the Federation vs the Borg. EDIT: I knew it was G/O 24 when I wrote this, but I keyslipped, and typed "34" instead of "24". Thanks to @Reiman33 for the correction. 👍
@Reiman33
@Reiman33 28 дней назад
that seems to be a very very loose interpretation of Starfleet General Order 34. General Order 34 All Starfleet personnel and/or Federation civilian contractors shall follow a superior's order to the best of their ability, unless said orders should conflict with the regulation laid out in these orders. I think you may have meant General Order 24. Even then, this is pretty loose as the Maqui were humans. General Order 24 If a commanding officer deems that a planet has been culturally contaminated to a point where correction is no longer viable and said culture now poses a direct threat to Starfleet personnel or Federation civilians, he may order the destruction of a planet’s surface to occur within a time limit set upon invocation. A morally bankrupt federation defense attorney could argue the planet itself was contaminated by maqui "culture" and said culture is a direct threat to the federation in creed. But it clearly violates the spirit of the order.

@tombarnett937
@tombarnett937 29 дней назад
But only because Eddington made him into one...that's kinda the point. Sisko turns the tables by willfully playing the part, and ends a genocidal spree that would have claimed countless more lives and likely conflagrated into a regional conflict. It proves that Sisko /wasn't/ a villain, and Eddington only got as far as he did because his fellow duelist was being merciful in the hopes Eddington would relent, believing him to not be a true villain. Sisko got serious the instant Eddington showed himself to be implacably ruthless, and ended the fight.

One of my absolute favorite episodes. And I think the reason why a lot of people over look the Maquis episodes is because they are kind of sprinkled rather thinly over the seasons, and in this case if you look at the next three episodes that come right after "For the uniform", you have the absolutely stellar "In Purgatory's Shadow" and "By Inferno's Light", which are also Garak heavy episodes, followed by "Doctor Bashir I presume" which mind blowing for its reasons (not to give too much away for the folks that want to watch the series at their own pace). And it just goes from there, so "For the Uniform" and the Maquis-line end up as something of a blip on the radar that are absolutely great, but end up being overshadowed by other episodes.

I wish they had left Tom Paris as the top Academy cadet who got expelled in Wesley’s TNG episode. That would’ve been a lot more interesting. He would have joined the Maquis after that, then to prison a couple of years later.

They would have had to pay royalties to the author of the Wesley academy episode for every episode a character he created appeared in.

In the original Star Trek TV series it emerges in one episode that there is a standardized order that Kirk can give to have his ship start vaporizing cities on a planet. Star Fleet definitely was a military in that series and it implies that space war would be extremely destructive rather than just space ships having duels in the middle of nowhere.

I don't think Sisko has any room to talk about betraying the uniform. He violated direct orders to commit an act of war against allies of the federation and started a war with the Klingons, move that not only got tons of people killed, it would also be that act where he saved Dukat from the klingons that would really bite him later and lead to another war. Also violating orders later to fly into battle of the Cardassians and Romulans going to bomb the Founders' homeworld, and then fired on Dominion ships. Implicating the federation in this attack.
