That’s what I thought of too! Except, I thought of a pendant as a solid and permanent object. Permanent/solid = finished, or completely completed in the past. If that makes sense, lol

(They have been coming to Spain every year since they were married.) Nous avons nagé pendant une heure. (We swam for an hour.) Depuis combien de temps attends-tu? (How long have you been waiting?) Son discours a duré vingt minutes. (Her speech lasted for twenty minutes.) Je l'ai téléphonée pendant ma pause déjeuner. (I phoned her during my lunch break.)

Great lesson! I never understood this before, but I got it very quickly with this lesson! I took away (the first letter is now my giveaway) Depuis (=Duration...ongoing) - Present tense + depuis Pendant (=Past...over/done) - Past tense + pendant Merci!!
i learnt to use pendant by watching French cooking videos. On dit, 'Cuire au four pendant 20 minutes' or 'Cuire doucement pendant 3 minutes', they always use pendant and not depuis. So one other possible way i look at it is, 'during'. i have rarely heard depuis and so can't give on the top of my head. But 'Depuis Longtemps' is a very common phrase, it means for/since a long time.

You are a very good teacher :-) This explanation of the difference between depuis and pendant was very useful for me. I just used them wrong when I explained for how long I have been living (and still are) in my town.
So, depuis is always used as English since and it can be used as English for, but only in a case of an unfinished process, while pendant can be used only as for (not since) if an action has been terminated. Right?
