The scene where Weidling tries to get the soldiers to surrender and end the madness. Unfortunatly the military police hanged and shot Peter's parents just before that.
With English subtitles.

Translation of Weidlings speech (0:16): “On April 30, 1945, the Führer committed suicide, abandoning everyone who had sworn allegiance to him. True to the order of the Führer, you, German soldiers, were ready to continue the fight for Berlin, although your ammunition was running low and the overall situation made further resistance pointless. I order the immediate cessation of all resistance. Every hour that you continue fighting prolongs the terrible suffering of the civilian population of Berlin and our wounded. In agreement with the high command of the Soviet troops, I urge you to stop fighting immediately. Weidling, former commander of the Berlin Defense Area. "

No film captures the madness that was Hitler’s Reich like this film does. Even when all was lost, even Berlin was all but lost they sent children out to fight and hung people in the streets. One of the all time great films. Don’ t miss Trudy Junge’s comments at the end.

This movie is amazing, certainly the best depiction of Berlin in the final days ever filmed. As for the boy finding his parents hung, I have ALWAYS assumed that there were a lot of back-alley executions of those who did these hangings by those who were close to the victims. I can also assume in many of those cases, the police just looked the other way, knowing what had actually happened

Oh, really? Did Soviets kill 16 million German civilians in the period of 1945-1948?
@michaelwild7560
@michaelwild7560 6 лет назад
Because Soviets didn't kill 16 million German civilians within the next 3 years - like Germans did it with the Soviets. Add to this all the civilians of other countries Germans also killed - those were millions as well. After all Germans had done to the Soviets the Soviet response was astonishingly mild. Not even 1% of what Germans had done to other nations and especially to the Soviets came back to Germans. And that's a fact. And that's a big difference. And it shows how forgiving the Soviets were and how sick Germans still are not to be grateful for it.
@Talyrion
@Talyrion 6 лет назад
The irony is, the USSR was at its most bloodthirsty BEFORE the war... and against their own people. Their invasion of Germany, while by no mean gentle, was positively tame compared to what the nazis did in eastern Europe - and that's not even speaking of what they planned to do. Even after failing to take Moscow through diversion of forces (namely swinging them south to Kiev in '41) and starting Barbarossa too late in the year, he still was in good position in '42 until he decided to divide Army Group South, sending half south towards Grozny to capture the vital oil fields and cripple the Soviets, and half towards strategically unimportant Stalingrad. The oil fields would have been captured with a full Army Group South, undoubtedly, even the Soviets admit it.
@hardanheavy
@hardanheavy 2 года назад
And it wouldn't have made a difference. The few oil fields the Germans captured were sabotaged so well that they were knocked out for months. Such a long time, that their movement tactics were screwed for lack of oil anyway. Nothing would have stopped the Soviets from executing Operations Uranus and Mars or their equivalents.
@hegaliandialectics4289
@hegaliandialectics4289 2 года назад
Any action the Germans could realistically take after 1942 would be prolonging the inevitable. The Soviet war machine was in absolute overdrive and nothing would stop them. This is what historically happens when you invade a nation with twice the population and 3 times the resources. It also didn’t help that the Russian people were given no alternative to siding with the Soviets given the whole 17 million of them murdered by the Nazis.
@Belfreyite
@Belfreyite 2 года назад
Really! Why clutch at straws. The whole thrust of Hitler's aggression was totally criminal. There was no justice in any of the Germanys wars and any attempt to suggest alternative winning tactics simply ignores and indeed compounds the evil. You may try to cover your wretched Wehrmacht with glory, but they were nothing more than brainwashed automatons. They deserve sympathy and all their millions of brides and offspring.

The Germans weren't so much brainwashed as they had internalised a social darwinism during the "long 19th century" (which extends to 1918). Hitler appealed to the people`s believe of superiority. However, a great accomplishment by the Americans were the Nuremberg trials in which they publicly accused a clique of Nazis to subjugate the German people. Not only did this allow to sentence the survivors of the regime to death but also for a restart of the German nation as a republic. It also serves as the justification of the Denazification.

0:35 '' despite that our ammunition ran out and the fight was already lost '' hah, ironic, i remember listening to one of Hitler's speeches (3 oktober 1941 wartime winter relief organization opening speech, for those wondering) and he basically says that right now they have so much ammunition that he can actually order production to cease in many spheres and that he doesn't know any opponent whom they would not be able to defeat with the existing amount of ammuntion
@roberthaworth8991
@roberthaworth8991 2 года назад
Hitler was probably trying to alleviate fears of another Shell Shortage, which had traumatized the German and several other armies in 1915, just before he joined up. Through the winter of 1914-15, until as late as May, guns were severely restricted in their firing rate -- sometimes they were limited to as little as 8 rounds/day. The ammunition requirements of modern war, and its duration, had been grossly underestimated by the war planners and by industry. A British government fell due to the scandal, and all the other major combatants' governments -- but esp. those of Russia and Germany -- were placed under severe strain.
