The scene where Weidling tries to get the soldiers to surrender and end the madness. Unfortunatly the military police hanged and shot Peter's parents just before that. With English subtitles.
Translation of Weidlings speech (0:16): “On April 30, 1945, the Führer committed suicide, abandoning everyone who had sworn allegiance to him. True to the order of the Führer, you, German soldiers, were ready to continue the fight for Berlin, although your ammunition was running low and the overall situation made further resistance pointless. I order the immediate cessation of all resistance. Every hour that you continue fighting prolongs the terrible suffering of the civilian population of Berlin and our wounded. In agreement with the high command of the Soviet troops, I urge you to stop fighting immediately. Weidling, former commander of the Berlin Defense Area. "
Strange. A German veteran who was conscripted as a boy and fought in Berlin, said in an interview that they were told that Hitler died on the battlefield.
@You Trooper hitler was an idiot. He had some of if not THE BEST military generals at his disposal and he didint listen to them he did as he wanted and Germany suffered the consequences. At times I feel sorry for those poor German men that hitler sent to die. If only hitler would have listen to his generals Europe and maybe even part of Russia would today be Germany.
@@davidkendrick4453 1, someone didn't watch the movie, because he was killed by Nazi's, 2 imagine now being able to separate movie from reality. Oh to be 13 again
No film captures the madness that was Hitler’s Reich like this film does. Even when all was lost, even Berlin was all but lost they sent children out to fight and hung people in the streets. One of the all time great films. Don’ t miss Trudy Junge’s comments at the end.
Compare videos of Berlin in the 30s to videos of London, Paris, Berlin etc today and tell me which one looks more mad. With regards to Traudi Junge, they conveniently leave out in the movie how she was raped well over a dozen times by Soviet troops when leaving the city.
@@TopDrek What are you talking about? I live in Berlin and there is no such madness here unless you count the Conspiracy theory people crying about Covid restrictions and vaccinations. This movie is amazing, certainly the best depiction of Berlin in the final days ever filmed. As for the boy finding his parents hung, I have ALWAYS assumed that there were a lot of back-alley executions of those who did these hangings by those who were close to the victims. I can also assume in many of those cases, the police just looked the other way, knowing what had actually happened
People like this do not get back alley executed, they form the new police and continue their petty terror. The RAF in BRD and West Berlin started with attempts to out such former nazi in West German service, but to no avail, so they went on with physical terror.

@Jake Folk die from which side? The Germans also executed everyone who refused to fight. And if you fought you may be killed by the Russians. Really no good options here. You had to pick just the right moment to stop fighting.
+Kingslea Hearne "When Weidling discovered that a major part of the last line of the German defences in Berlin were "manned" by Hitler Youth, he ordered German Youth Leader (Reichsjugendführer) Artur Axmann to disband the Hitler Youth combat formations in the city. But, in the confusion, his order was never carried out. In the end, many German youths did die defending Berlin." (wikipedia)
Yeah ... if only all those people that you guys worship here had the courage to oppose Hitler before he had full controll and power. Right? Imagine the suffering and senseless los of life which could have been avoided. And don't say it wasn't 'possible', go and read about Henning von Tresckow who conspired and opposed Hitler pretty much from the start, but at the very least since the late 1930s.
+CriWuk Oppose Hitler? The man was way too convincing. And once he took power... there was no going back. His ideology from what he had learned in WW1 was "Never surrender, never retreat. Fight till the last." When the reality is... military tactics don't work that way. It's easy for us to say now: "Simple: Just execute Hitler". But if you lived in the Great Depression back then... you wouldn't have wanted to.
To be honest ... and I know this sounds stupid ... but I give a lot to pure bad luck. Hitler survived over 20 ( !!! ) assassination attempts. it is almost unbelievable that he always survived, sometimes due to the most insane luck possible.
On April 30, 1945, the leaders had committed suicide and that whoever had sworn allegiance to him, left in the lurch. Faithful to the command of the leader were you, German soldiers, ready to continue the fight for Berlin, although ammunition was running low and your overall location made further resistance futile. I order the immediate cessation of any resistance.
This isn’t really translated correctly. It’s actually “On April 30th, 1945, the Führer committed suicide, and in doing so, abandoned those who were loyal to him. You, German soldiers, were ready to continue the battle for Berlin, even though ammunition was low and there was no point for further resistance. I order an immediate cease fire. jack hynes I get it now: He was announcing it live, but at the same time it was recorded on tape, so then they can play it on loop as this truck goes around Berlin.
Now I have had German in school, i feel the pain in this scene even more. Here are the captions: (Sorry if not completely correct, i am Dutch) On the 30th of April, 1945, the Fuhrer commited suicide. And in doing so, he has betrayed everyone that had sworn loyalty to him. You, German Soldiers, loyal to him, were prepared to continue the Battle for Berlin, even though ammunition was short and further resistance was hopeless. In agreement with the high command of the Soviet Army, I order you to stop fighting immediately. Weidling, former Chief of the Defense Area of Berlin. A glass of water, please.
Thanks for this. Peter's parents have certainly been shot and killed, but just how official the killers were is another question in the chaos at the end of the war. I believe in the audio commentary Bernd Eichinger says that there was one man known as "The Hangman" who went round hanging civilians, although the war was clearly lost.
@@evilrobottolhurst And I'm guessing that many civilians who survived such aftershocks were frequently looted and pillaged by Russian soldiers who were good and pissed off after so many years of bombardment from the Germans.
This is crazy... Everyone is realising the fact that the war is over, Hitler is gone and Weidling orders every person to stop fighting. Slowly it hits that you have survived and that you stand in front of an abyss, everything is destroyed and you have nothing. But at least the war is over. And still, some fanatics are raging in the last hours of the lost war and even after it. Heartbreaking. The acting is absolut perfect
You have to keep in mind that people didn't know if they really have survived. They knew the russians where coming and the russians where very often out for brutal revenge for what germans had done to them. Women, children, even very small ones had been raped and murdered by russian soldiers comi.g west. Nobody knew what would happen. A lot of people killed themselves in the last days of the war.

sources have said that even as late as the day of surrender, SS units were still arresting and executing traitors. a common sight in berlin was one of a hung male german, with a sign on his neck saying something along the lines "this happened to mebecause i have lost all honor and have betrayed my country". so it was still organized quite a bit. that hangman was doing the dirty work of the SS. but they definitely still carried out orders.

Yes, what Hitler and the Nazi did was absolutely horrendous; a genocide of the greatest magnitude. Nonetheless, it must have been terrible being a German national in the ruins of post-WWII Berlin, 1945. The national humiliation of defeat must have been unbearable.
Not just that. Humiliation was going to be the least of their worries. Especially for German women that bump across Soviet soldiers. National humiliation? Try gulags and gang-rapes on top of Church altars.
My grandfather lived through the war in Germany, from what little he's said about it he spent his childhood moving from one bombed out town to another, stealing from farmers to eat, and once saw his friend blown to bits by a landmine.
I understand that you guys trying to separate, because it is the black pages of history of the German nation. But do not deny the facts. Most of the plundered German families, probably also sent someone to the front. So, society can not be separated from the army in a country with a totalitarian ideology and mandatory service, logical?

Because Soviets didn't kill 16 million German civilians within the next 3 years - like Germans did it with the Soviets. Add to this all the civilians of other countries Germans also killed - those were millions as well. After all Germans had done to the Soviets the Soviet response was astonishingly mild. Not even 1% of what Germans had done to other nations and especially to the Soviets came back to Germans. And that's a fact. And that's a big difference. And it shows how forgiving the Soviets were and how sick Germans still are not to be grateful for it.
The irony is, the USSR was at its most bloodthirsty BEFORE the war... and against their own people. Their invasion of Germany, while by no mean gentle, was positively tame compared to what the nazis did in eastern Europe - and that's not even speaking of what they planned to do. Generalplan Ost, anyone?
Thats because I have feelings and I became so emotional because it was finally over and the people could start again their lives or what remains of it...
Even after failing to take Moscow through diversion of forces (namely swinging them south to Kiev in '41) and starting Barbarossa too late in the year, he still was in good position in '42 until he decided to divide Army Group South, sending half south towards Grozny to capture the vital oil fields and cripple the Soviets, and half towards strategically unimportant Stalingrad. The oil fields would have been captured with a full Army Group South, undoubtedly, even the Soviets admit it.
And it wouldn't have made a difference. The few oil fields the Germans captured were sabotaged so well that they were knocked out for months. Such a long time, that their movement tactics were screwed for lack of oil anyway. Nothing would have stopped the Soviets from executing Operations Uranus and Mars or their equivalents.
Any action the Germans could realistically take after 1942 would be prolonging the inevitable. The Soviet war machine was in absolute overdrive and nothing would stop them. This is what historically happens when you invade a nation with twice the population and 3 times the resources. It also didn’t help that the Russian people were given no alternative to siding with the Soviets given the whole 17 million of them murdered by the Nazis.
Really! Why clutch at straws. The whole thrust of Hitler's aggression was totally criminal. There was no justice in any of the Germanys wars and any attempt to suggest alternative winning tactics simply ignores and indeed compounds the evil. You may try to cover your wretched Wehrmacht with glory, but they were nothing more than brainwashed automatons. They deserve sympathy and all their millions of brides and offspring.
He actually helped the SS kill every civilian who refused to defend Berlin (although the war was basically lost).. he looks so angry because the boy helped some men escaping the SS.. the same man also killed his parents, you can see them at the end of the video

@globautojr actually i know that Weidling died in that year. The thing is i thought there might be alternate death for Weidling just like Fegelein's. (In the movie, Högl gunned him down but he actually got executed.)

Not only that but it's a myth Hitler ever had the mass support people think of him as having. The people being brainwashed, was less significant than his creation of a terror apparatus that just petrified those in resistance into complete and total submission. The army hated him on a widespread scale.
The Germans weren't so much brainwashed as they had internalised a social darwinism during the "long 19th century" (which extends to 1918). Hitler appealed to the people`s believe of superiority. However, a great accomplishment by the Americans were the Nuremberg trials in which they publicly accused a clique of Nazis to subjugate the German people. Not only did this allow to sentence the survivors of the regime to death but also for a restart of the German nation as a republic. It also serves as the justification of the Denazification.
You have to be German descendant raised with grandparents stories of those days to understand how hard it is to lose a war and been unable to do anything. It will stay in memory for generations...Especially the humiliation

0:35 '' despite that our ammunition ran out and the fight was already lost '' hah, ironic, i remember listening to one of Hitler's speeches (3 oktober 1941 wartime winter relief organization opening speech, for those wondering) and he basically says that right now they have so much ammunition that he can actually order production to cease in many spheres and that he doesn't know any opponent whom they would not be able to defeat with the existing amount of ammuntion
Hitler was probably trying to alleviate fears of another Shell Shortage, which had traumatized the German and several other armies in 1915, just before he joined up. Through the winter of 1914-15, until as late as May, guns were severely restricted in their firing rate -- sometimes they were limited to as little as 8 rounds/day. The ammunition requirements of modern war, and its duration, had been grossly underestimated by the war planners and by industry. A British government fell due to the scandal, and all the other major combatants' governments -- but esp. those of Russia and Germany -- were placed under severe strain.
The scene at 0:10 min. happened in real at Berlin/Friedrichstrasse, Waffen SS "Nordland" platoon came under heavy fire and fought to the last man/woman. Soviet TASS press photographer Mark Redkin took the original pictures of the Waffen SS corpses.
