Progress to an advanced level of guitar playing - bulletproofguitarplayer.com In today's lesson, we take a look at legendary slide player Derek Trucks. One of the more unique and impressive aspects of Trucks' playing is his ability to perform long blues phrases on single strings when using a slide. To get the intonation right for every note when playing runs like these, you'll have to invest some real practice time into controlling where you want the slide to go.
This is a lesson I've been wanting to make for quite some time and I really hope that you guys enjoy it. It was a lot of fun making it.

The main reason why he’s really good at the one-string melodies/licks is that he was heavily influenced by and studied the techniques of Ali Akbar Khan, an Indian classical musician who plays the sarod. There’s a lot of Indian music inflection in Trucks’ playing.

In Indian classical music, whether it is North Indian Hindustani Music or South Indian Carnatic music, the solo instrument typically emulates the human voice. This kind of cantabile style is why there are so many runs on a single string. Derek’s study of Indian music shows in his playing.

Derek also does this rake with his thumb between licks. I have a friend who compared this to a gospel singer taking a breath and I thought that was a perfect description.

You can't help but make guitar faces when you listen to Derek. I'd go out on the limb, and just say he's the greatest slide player..ever. He's my favorite player PERIOD. Lots of players have great phrasing and tone, but his playing transcends all of that for me. I've been working on my slide chops lately, and this video is on time. Thanks, captain!

I’m happy to say I’ve met Derek and had my picture made with him. He is one of the few musicians whose playing has made me cry. There’s a gig he played pre-TTB when it was just the DTB on a show called mountain stage where Susan joined in and they were playing her song: I wanna move away from here. That’s the song and playing that brought me to tears! Derek has something special. He’s been unique almost since he picked up the guitar. I still think of him as the child prodigy with the Atlanta braves hat on. Long live Derek Trucks!

As just a TTB fan, it was wonderful to have a technical guitar instructor show me how what it is I'm hearing (and making my own funny faces about every time I see them) is made. The fact that Derek Trucks, John Petrucci, Paul Gilbert, Guthrie Govan, Joe Bonamassa, Zakk Wylde, Al DiMeola (just to name a few) are always performing live in so many diff incarnations lends fuel to the thought that we are living through another golden age for guitar. Very good video! I have been obsessed with playing Derek Trucks style slide guitar ever since I saw him live like 8 years ago now. A couple things that you didn't touch on were his letting the string tone kid of die off as he plays, usually only plucking the string once per phrase, and his slow fade ins with the volume knob. But those are more advanced techniques, and could be used for a secondary video. The beauty of Derek Trucks' playing was best put by John Mayer. He has the ability to turn his guitar into an old jazz singer. Great video, again. This will really help people find fun, new ways to play slide guitar. We need more of it.

There's so much to Derek Truck's slide that goes beyond the idea of single string finesse. His phrasing, attack, vibrato and a sort of mico-tonal treatment of the notes makes his playing style highly original. I am guessing here, but he sounds just as influenced by gospel singing as he does by the slide players who have come before him.

Totally nailed it man, best Derek Trucks lesson I have ever seen. I haven't yet found a slide lesson demonstrating the different slide positions along the neck (like how there are multiple positions for the pentatonic scale) like Derek does, and like you did in this video at the 30 second mark. Have you ever thought of doing an in depth lesson on the different open E slide positions? I feel confined to the small slide box that is so common but I want to be able to move as freely between many positions on the neck as I can with pentatonic stuff in standard tuning and like you did in this video. Maybe you could help demonstrate a few positions for slide playing that aren't just that same normal slide box that everyone knows and starts out playing to help build a better "bag of tricks" for open E slide. Thanks for the great content!
