I took accutane over a decade ago and while it was an *experience* lol the results were incredible. I had debilitating cycstic acne before but after I finished my round of accutane my skin practically glows. If I had to do it over again, I would 100% make the same choice.
I agree about the fear. I waited until I was 32 (waited 10 years after learning about it) to start accutane due to fears about it impacting my health. I regret it now. Having an extra 10 years of unnecessary acne greatly impacted the appearance and health of my skin.
@@MissMichixohey! I just started my second round this last month and it cleared my skin so fast in comparison to the first time. I still have to be on it for 4 more months but I don’t regret doing it at all!
I was prescribed accutane by my dermatologist. I was nervous because I’m not a big pill taker but once I did my research I became very excited!!! I’ve had acne since I was 13 and now I’m 33 and I still have acne and hyperpigmentation. I never imagined myself with clear skin so I’m excited to start I have to wait a month for my first dose
@@stephaddiction the side effects scared me I would hate to take a medicine and later in my life I have liver damage so I told my dermatologist I wanted to topical instead, the topical is working I’m happy I put my body first
@@anthonettemiddleton2206 liver damage is preventable with proper blood work, hydration, eating nutritious foods, and supplementing with NAC or tudca. Also avoid liver toxic drugs/alcohol!!
I delt with acne for 12 years ( I am now 24 years) I kept pushing it off due to the negatively of it online. I finally pushed my self to take it this year, I'm on month 4 and its been the best decision of my life. I cannot believe the results I've gotten my skin glows and is like a baby again. I have free myself from my insecurity of my skin. Ive never been this happy. Thank you accutane
I have a weird confession that I have to make. I noticed that each day I’m closer and closer to turning into Dr Dray. I’m completely serious... 2 years ago I wasn’t drinking coffee, I did not use sunscreen and vegetables were a no no to me. I was a typical teenager ( smoking, drinking, partying). Right now I’m starting my day with a huge cup of coffee, I eat a lot of vegetables, I became vegan, I reapply sunscreen multiple times a day, I wear sun protective clothing and I even wear those headbands that Dr Dray often wears, not to mention that I’m a huge introvert. I even started to realize that I want to become a dermatologist... Anyways, I don’t complain about that because I feel much better with this kind of lifestyle, so thank u Dr Dray for making me a better version of myself:)
I am on Accutane currently and I got angular cheilitis in the corners of my lips from it. I now put athletes foot cream in the corners and it has worked WONDERS! I highly recommend that for anyone who as dry cracked corners of the mouth.
I used cortisone which works but I am also struggling with my ears cracking/peeling and my nose is clogged I thought I had a sinus infection the whole time just for me to realize my mucus lining is just cracking off causing bleeding (I live in colorado dry climate). I also feel extremely tired. The problem is my face looks great! So I am conflicted about going down on my dosage.
I finished my round of accutane over a decade ago. It’s not the most fun while you’re taking it but I am so glad I went through it. B/c my skin still looks amazing all these years later. Edit: fixed a typo

both of my sons have run through courses of accurate. Dry lips was definitely a main symptom. One preferred Vaseline, the other Aquaphor. My oldest used Renee Rouleau skin recovery lotion at night and ZO skin hydrating cream during the day. The ZO I had leftover from a laser treatment for myself and he really liked it. One was much more sensitive about the look of being so dry (he also took during the school year). The other didn't care as much, he happened to run his course during the summer. Dry nose was a bit of an issue but not too bad. The oldest swabbed a little Vaseline in his nose at night and felt that helped a lot. Both have beautiful skin (face, back & shoulders) now and would agree that a few annoying months were well worth it. As a side note, they also have much less oily hair than before. Oiliness has not yet returned. Now that they both have such beautiful skin I'm working really hard to get them on daily sunscreen. I've won with the oldest (he's a bit more vain) still working on the younger one.
Really appreciate your effort and passion for them to just have good and healthy skin! You are doing a great job with them and i'm just happy to read they're now recovered from the acne and you're now trying to make them wear sunscreen hahaha, quite adorable and wholesome. I’m soooo glad I didn’t shy away from accutane. It was a rough 6 months, but it was so worth it. Had terrible adult female acne pop up out of nowhere in my mid 30s. Accutane not only got rid of it, but I swear has reversed aged me at least 10 years.

Accutane changed my life. Your videos encouraged me to finally take the dive and work with my dermatologist who had recommended Accutane in the past. @@stephaddiction still clear and still healthy! :) I think I have gotten a total of two pimples since getting off accutane in January 2021 (2 stressful weeks at work were the culprits). I use adapalene 0.3% every night for my retinoid, derm prescribed.

Thank u for taking the time to talk about iPledge and the problems with it. It was such a barrier for me (almost 1 full year of having issues getting on it because of this/my obgyn who is so old school). It’s also awful because the program insinuates those who might get pregnant would carry it! Not the case all of the time. I’m someone who can get pregnant, I don’t want to, I make sure I won’t but obvi it could happen, if it did, I wouldn’t keep it. That’s me. But I still had to jump through hurdles getting on it and dealing with issues with different forms of birth control. Sigh.
Sadly women wouldn't even be able to get rid of it in a lot of the US now. Fuckin border counties here in TX tryna to outlaw "traveling or aiding someone in getting an abortion", it's insanity. Are they gonna enforce it by making women do roadside pregnancy tests??
Accutane definitely saved my life. I was on Accutane a total of 3x. I never drank while on it except one time while I was with friends and began to regret it because I had hot flashes and heart palpitations but felt normal the next morning
When my acne was at it´s worst it made me depressed and reclusive....It is not only painful but also exhausting when you have to try a million different cremes that work for a while and then don´t. Only people that have had acne will understand...Currently on low dose accutane, so far I do love it...no extreme side effects...

Are you in Australia? It is a good idea to start Roaccutane in the winter when it's not as sunny. Still always wear your sunacreen though, even on cloudy days. Good luck! 👱♀️❤
I was LITERALLY just looking at the Accutane Q&A because I went to my Dermatologist today and decided to start Accutane, and was nervous regarding the possibility of having leftover effects in case I want to get pregnant in the future. Accutane may damage your eggs and fertility. There’s actually some published research about this and it’s been reported extensively in fda reports. Don’t be too reassured by this video… it’s full of misinformation.
i’m glad i never looked at the internet before accutane or i wouldn’t have started it- people showed the worst of it, but my skin instantly looked like a million bucks after starting 👏🏻☝🏻 i had bloody noses all the time though.
“Don’t be afraid to ask your Dr”? If only all Dr were as nice as you. Most Drs are arrogant, and seem to hate any form of questioning, that’s why people are usually afraid to ask. They usually forget the human aspect of medicine, which is crucial if you truly intend to be a good physician
Refuse to go back. If they won’t listen, walk out. Be your own advocate with doctors. I know it’s hard to know which ones will be good but they’re out there. And I have walked out on doctors before when they refused to listen. They are experts, yes, but they need the information only you can provide about YOUR body to use that expertise.

For instance, it took me 4 months to get to see a specialist (referral, insurance approval, availability), walking out on him (after he had canceled my two previous appointments) would have meant potentially waiting an additional 4 months or maybe longer, meanwhile I would have have to suffer with my condition throughout all that time. I do think healthcare needs to change in this country.
Currently on 6/8 months! Had bacne that would NOT go away, along with persistent (but less severe) body and face acne. Has cleared pretty much everything up 😭 did chap tf out of my lips and made my skin pretty red. Other than that been good 👍🏻

I had horrendous acne that seemed to get worse the older I got , and believe me I tried EVERYTHING. Nothing worked like Accutane, I would do it all over again and suffer every side effect and only wish I had asked about it sooner. Having clear skin finally gave me some confidence back!
Taking poison for clear skin 🥴🥴also take note that negative effects from accutane use may arise years or even a decade or more later after using it… due to the dna and mitochondria damage it causes.
My brother struggled with bad acne as a teenager, this is back in the 90s , my sister and I would follow Paula Begoun and she’d talk about Accutane as being the only real cure for acne. Doctors don’t offer it right away unless you ASK for it, which we did and my brother’s cystic acne went away and he became himself again. Teenagers with cystic acne struggle with major depression and it’s very sad to see because acne is curable with Accutane so doctors SHOULD be prescribing it more frequently and not to just boys. Back in the 90s they weren’t but hopefully now things have changed. I hope everyone watches this video because it’s so depressing to see young people with cystic acne on forums like tiktok and people suggesting things like rubbing your face with honey to get rid of acne…..frustrating and sad to see. Thanks you Dr Dray for spreading the word. If my brother didn’t go on Accutane then he’d have major facial scars now.
Doctors shouldn't offer it right away. It tend to work very well but it's a bit riskier when it comes to side effects so other options are tried first. Ppl think they need Accutane because they have 2 pimples on their face.
After trying EVERYTHING for very bad adult cystic acne (painful and oozing) I went on this powerful drug-2 rounds. Be ready for monthly pregnancy and liver testing, signing waivers and basically drying from the inside out. Peeling and constantly thirsty while I was in school in my late 20s was brutal. The result? I’m 54 and still have PERFECT SKIN. Of course no sun EVER and other lifestyle choices but to this day No wrinkles, no Botox, no fillers and perfect texture. Worth the pain.
I am 3 months into accutane and it is helping so far , but the progress is extremely slow . Hoping to see the light of day where I don't have to hide my skin anymore
The accutane subreddit is an insane group where people who have serious side effects (very dry eyes, suicidal thoughts, bad joint pain, blurry vision, headaches) encourage each other to keep going and not stop taking the drug. It’s like a suicide cult. Good luck.
Dr dray always reads my mind, I was just thinking of these issues as I am halfway through my accutane treatment! I had no major issues until I got up to 60mg, I just started noticing some back pain, fatigue, and lip drying. But overall, the treatment is working wonders, I have no chest/back acne anymore and my face is almost pimple free.
I took Accutane in my twenties, due to really bad hormonal breakouts. I was on it six weeks and had to stop taking it due to elevated liver enzymes. My skin was immediately dry after my second dose. I did have long term results even after taking it for such a short time. Later I did find out I have Gilbert’s Syndrome.
I'm on week 5 of isotretinoin journey and omg, the jug of water is soo true, I'm basically surgically attached to a water bottle 😂 I would like to add to the list incredibly dry nostrils. Or maybe it's just me. Also, my hands are peeling, the worst part is that I also have eczema so it's a mess. I have a lip balm in bedroom, in living room, in kitchen and near my laptop. I hope that in the end it's worth all of this.
@@georgiareed7743 I don't think so.. My brother in law took way higher dose than me, had the same side effects and both his and mine blood work looks perfect. I think that our doctor knows what she's doing, since she has PhD and is lecturer in university.
@@Noel.Chmielowiec it doesn’t matter if he took a higher dose. Everyone is different. People have gotten permanent side effects from 10mg 2x per week, or even a few pills. Side effects are a sign that your body is being poisoned…

You know what.. I take more meds that basically keep me alive and they might permanently damage my brain, so I'm not scared of retinoid. But they MIGHT do it, no one is telling me that they WILL do it. The same with isotretinoin. I'm constantly checked by my GP and if she will find something wrong she will tell me. And for me it matters that my derm has PhD, because she's constantly doing research, and she specialises in acne.
I had none of the abovementioned side effects. No dry eyes....maaaaybe slightly dry lips. Did not use anything for the lips or eyes. Just sunscreen, but I always use broadspectrum SPF anyway. *And it cured my acne for life* . I took 120mg/kg (cumulatively). Took it with breakfast + teaspoon of *olive oil* .
@@MissMichixo My skin has been like *glass* these past ... well 20 years. From extremely oily it went to normal *permanently* (not even combination, it is just: normal). Reading all the side effects sure was scary, but honestly *no one* in "my acne community" suffered any damage I swear 😃
The permanent damaging side effects of Accutane may arise months or years after you stop your course. This happens for a lot of reasons, including dna and mitochondria damage.
100% the dry nose! Yikes!! And dry eyes. Accutane is actually the thing that got me to use SPF every day from my early 20s, started the habit and never stopped :)
I am 37 years old am about to begin Accutane in the next month due to hormonal breakouts. I didn't have acne in my teens. I only started with acne in my 30's and it has gotten way worse lately. I do worry that the acne will return after going through all the side effects of Accutane due to the hormonal causes of it. I do thank you Dr. Dray for your Accutane videos, especially product recommendations for being on the drug.
If u have hormonal acne,it is gonna come back,Try adapalene with a simple but effective skincare(cleasing oil,gentle water base cleanser,hydrating toner or serum,cream or lotion,spf everyday and avoid fragance)😊👍🏽
Update: month 5 and I’m on the home stretch and cannot stop looking in the mirror cos my skin is glowing. Not a pimple in sight. Backache hurt like a B today but I can bear it. Last month, of 6 course treatment is Feb 2023. Doctor will put me on a topical tretonoin for preventive measures. I love you Accutane.,❤
I've been on it a month, and the results are great. Burning sensitive skins sometimes, but chapped lips 24/7. I also have to bathe in lotion. I'm supposed to take 120mg/day but 80 works for me so I've just been taking that.
An ad for IVF treatnent was weird to accompany a video about Accutane! (BTW it's called Roaccutane in Australia). Not making light of the consequences...but not consuming alchohol and having back pain are two good ways of not getting in the situation of getting pregnant! 👱♀️❤

I think Dr Dray has a video on thermal water from a few years back. Would love to see her do a deep dive into the mineral composition of different brands - Avene, LRP, Uriage, Vichy etc.
Pretty sure that no water spray regardless of mineral content should be sprayed on your face without locking it in with a moisturizer. You’d set yourself up for transdermal water loss, further drying your skin, by just spraying it on your face for cooling purposes without locking it in.
I don't think (increased) dryness would be a problem. You're not washing your face, stripping off oils and otherwise disrupting the skin barrier. You'd spray this over your moisturizer, sunscreen (possibly make up) and whatever oils your skin has already produced since your last wash. And being a light mist, it just sits on top of your skin for a couple seconds and then evaporates - which feels very nice, but is neither moisturizing nor drying, really - and yes, I'm speaking from experience - we don't really do air conditioning here, so you have to be creative in fighting the heat. I just use demineralized water in a fine mist bottle, though - I think termal water is a waste of money, unless (maybe) you use it like an active on freshly cleaned skin.
I took Accutane. It was a miracle treatment. My lips were dry but apart from that, no side effects at all. You need a good doctor and never ever get pregnant during treatment.
Ahhhh I haven’t posted on this subreddit but i can’t say I haven’t been scrolling through it everyday! Could you please do an Accutane skincare/hair routine? Especially for dealing with telogen effluvium, itchy scalp, and the “purging” whilst not being able to combat it with actives 😩🙏🏻

They were very helpful - however I am still wondering if there are any products I can use to prevent or stop this side effect as well as ways I can manage the itch, very dry skin, etc and washing the hair during the summer time. I realize these are likely too individualized of questions and I should try to seek answers on my own from my own health providers, but honestly my dermatologist hasn’t been the most helpful. (I’m using a telemedicine doctor who is located all the way across the country, haha)
This was so informative for me as i start accutane! One question I have for Dr. Dray is: Is it ok to continue using hydrocolloids for acne while on accutane? initially i planned to rely heavily on them thru the treatment but the stuff about disturbing the skin water barrier has me second guessing! If you are young (teens & young 20s), please don't take this crap! I took it my junior year of high school and I STILL suffer from intense back pain, stiff joints, sore right arm joints, dry skin, and dry mouth & lips!!! I AM 24 NOW 😫
Im on my second day on accutane, im trying my best in this medication cause I know(somehow) that my side effects will be psychological… Im just using internet for school things, im trying to just watch movies, listen to music, and read books that won’t affect to much my mood….. im trying to exercice more, and i try to dont be too alone. Ive been in this routine for at least 3 months from my first day on the medication, im already more calm and relaxed. Hope you guys fallow this advice ;) im happier than ever, a detox of internet while on accutane (on my pov) is really important
Accutane fixed my cystic acne but wrecked havoc on my physical and mental health. My experience was a year-long struggle of joint pain and suicidal ideation while being told Accutane was the only hope to fix my skin. I'm glad it worked but I wouldn't do it again. It was one of the toughest years of my life.

@@SL-og7oz the Ipledge program and drug information doesn’t list many of the potential side effects, including decrease in neurogenesis, reduction in hippocampus size, damage to neurons, neurodegenerative conditions, MS, paralysis, infertility, damage to ovarian reserve, permanent tendon damage/ruptured, and many degenerative health conditions that can arise months or years after using isotretinoin. Unless you have researched the connection between accutane and all of these serious conditions yourself, you are not fully informed. Most people are fine when they use the drug and develop health issues later on after stopping it, and this is due to the nature of the mechanisms it causes, including dna and mitochondrial damage.
Yes Accuntane will change your life..Staying hydrated is the 🗝️. I'm in my forties and this is my third round of this and it always the lips first to dry out and dry nose but keep that carmex in purse and Vaseline for outside of nose area , refresh for dry eyes. vanicream soap for face and dove deep moisture for the body and body oil.. three month in and another three months left.
I had a very rough time on Accutane myself. These tips would have come in handy back then for sure. Oddly enough, it did not resolve my acne issues either.
Why do they never take into account if your partner has had a vasectomy!? Took me far too long to get on the drug. Over 10 years of antibiotics, now they don't work for me. Even through illness.
You may want to try tear duct plugs instead of artificial tears which are ineffective for me. They have lubricants you can rinse your mouth out with to keep it lubricated. They also have a product called ''Ocean" for your dry nose
Started accutane at 29 . Had suffered acne for 10 years previously. It worked. I drank during my 8 month course. No repercussions. Acne did come back 10 years later. I restarted accutane at a very low dosage for 4 months and it cleared the acne.
Towards the end of my accutane treatment I developed GERD and stomach problems, which have only gotten worse years after . I’m now diagnosed with Chron’s and have constant LPR. My acne also came back in a different form mostly all over my scalp. Accutane was a cancer drug used to destroy cells and dries out mucus membranes in the gut. You can say whatever you want, but I wish I never took this drug as all of these conditions started slowly at the end of my treatment and preceded to get worse and worse. They have a inflected a living on hell on to me. Did accutane cause this ? I guess you can never be certain but I know it only made things much much worse. I would never take this if I had the chance to go back. Please consider every alternative. My will to live is at all time low.
I took 2 rounds of Accutane back in high school. It definitely made my life better with hardly experiencing cystic acne on my face that I'm forever grateful for, however, being on it was rough. I remember crying at the thought of having to poo... I had pretty severe hemorrhoids from squeezing because they were so hard. My advice to anyone on it or about to be: DRINK PLENTY OF WATER, TAKE IT SERIOUSLY PLEASE
Optometrist in the chat. Please tell you eye doctor if you are any medication for acne. So many side effects that can occur externally and internally to the eye.
Maybe ask everyone the question about acne medication during initial consultations/updating details, as it may be an awkward question to ask someone who is self concious about their skin. BTW, Have you seen Dr Dray's videos about eyelash growth serums? Thankfully I have never used them, but would never use them after what Dr Dray said that they can do to one's eyes. Maybe ask patients about eye serum use too? Many people are unaware of how damaging they can be to eye health. 👱♀️❤

Im finishing month 5 of accutane. The only side effects I’m having are dry eyes, blurry vision, dry lips, itchy skin, and I’m more prone to scrapes and scratches.
@@georgiareed7743Dryness is the most common side effect and it’s my main side effect. The blurry vision and scratches are a result of the dryness. None of it is permanent. @@gbeana81 dryness is caused by cell death and atrophy to the sebaceous and meibomian glands and absolutely be permanent. Accutane is chemotherapy. Look up MGD
@@ragnarlothbroke7825 I started at 20mg/day and worked up to 80mg. I was on it a total of 9 months. Almost 3 years later and my skin is still clear with no long term side effects. It was totally worth it.

My Derm mentioned some take low dose Accutane year round to keep skin clear and young etc. Would love to know your views on this. Seen your video about keeping oil at bay but what about low dose long term for actual acne?
I take 40mg accutane, but don't have any of the side effects mentioned in this video, except for dry lips... I don't have dry eyes or mouth or skin, and my lips are only dry in the morning and normal for the rest of the day. Does anyone else experience this?

Dr. Dray, Can you speak on potential sexual side effects and erectile dysfunction that some people say comes with isotretinoin treatment. I just started taking this drug and have not had any changes yet, and I have taken it in the past and did not seem to have a problem, but this seems like something that isn’t talked about.
hey Dr. Dray, I took Accutane over 10 years ago in high school and it did wonders for me. But I DO feel like my stomach was never the same again - like IBS-like symptoms. I have seen some people online report similar issues. Have you heard of this or is there any research to back this experience? TIA❤
Accutane was the best thing ever for me. I didn't get Cystic Acne until I became a young adult. It was under control with Antibiotics but as soon as I moved to Texas and weird thing only in the winter did I get really bad flare ups. It hurt to touch my face. My skin was horrible. I was hesitant for awhile when doctors asked me if I wanted to try it because of the side affects. I was finally just tired of having such bad skin that hurt to touch that I finally decided to give it a go when the dermatologist told me that I will be closely monitored. I did 5 months of oral treatment. That was 2007 and my skin has been clear ever since. I was already 36 almost 37 years-old when I started treatment.
Ahhh Accutane. This is taking me back to a year and a half ago when I finished my course. Talk about the most invasive treatment I ever went through (outside the OBGYN where invasive is expected). My only solace was going to the UK to study abroad at the end of my course. Totally didn’t finish my iPledge but I wasn’t pregnant (couldn’t be because abstinence was my birth control and that’s super easy for me to do). The GP i registered with while in the UK just stared at me like...go to Boots for a test and send your primary GP a picture. We’re not doing a birth control test and billing it back to the healthcare system just to satisfy the American FDA... (totally understandable and frankly it was nice to be able to ditch iPledge at the end of my course). It was a good thing that I had one month left of my course and could stop living my “dried up prune” life.
It’s SO invasive! The US doesn’t need this program. Especially now knowing there are so many other drugs people take that impact fetal development too. Eye roll.
The fact that there has been discussion for decades on the safety of something says a lot. If its definitely safe constant discussion wouldn't be needed.
