Someone else mentioned the YT channel “A Salon Life” - if you’re interested in seeing how to do a gentle manicure, she uploads at least one a week with lots of additional informative videos. I’ve learned so much from her (Anna) bc she shares evidence based information combined with her expertise. It’s also so helpful to SEE how she does a gentle manicure so that you can learn to emulate. She has clients that come back week to week so you can see their progress and she and you can also send her photos and she will reply with advice on how to fix all kinds of issues. Super helpful! Kerasal is magic but I also wanted to mention the new OPI Repair Mode - it repairs the bonds in your nails and my nails were transformed but this product. Somehow it made them stronger, smoother, and more flexible at the same time. If you have really weak nails (breaking and splitting), the Mavala Scientifique K+ is a gem (only apply to the tips of your nails every week for a month and then go to every other week or you’ll create super brittle nails, that’s how well it works!). So much great advice in this video, thank you! ✨

One additional note: A Salon Life also shows the Dazzle Dry colors so you can see comparisons to the line but also with other brands which is really helpful!

I stopped wearing nail polish in April 2023 and filed my nails all the way down. I started using oil at least 7 to 10 times a day. As of today, my nails are in the best shape ever. Organic Jojoba, Almond, Sunflower , and FlexiNail oils have worked for me. Soaking nails in warm oil every one to two weeks in addition to only pushing back cuticles with a wood stick has helped as well . It takes patience. I started seeing damaged nails moving towards the free edge with 4 months. I would then gently file them down. You are worth the wait. Be patient.

Great video…I watch The Salon Life. She is a nail technician and has a RU-vid channel. She is very knowledgeable and she recommended many of the things you mention. To grow nails…keep them super short. Take care of cuticles weekly…but ver gently. Nail soak with jojoba oil since it penetrates better. Once a week do a manicure, soak and leave unpolished overnight. She recommends Dazzle Dry…I am trying that. She mentioned the same substance and now I look to see if the polish has it. She also recommends kerasal. I am trying to grow out my nails after a lifetime of nail biting and picking on the skin. (And I am 60j. All recommendations have helped immensely! She has additional product recommendations that are great. Highly recommend her channel for anyone struggling with nails

I’m a classical guitarist who’s struggled with very thin peeling nails; I tried the usual supplements and topicals for years, but what finally worked was adding 2-4Tbs of collagen to my daily protein shake made all the different in strengthening my nails and stop the peeling.Took about 3 mos.

I played classical guitar for years. It is murder on your nails, isn’t it? I played classical flamenco and it was especially murder on my right hand nails. I always used a nail strengthened, but I removed it after about four days and started with a new sequence of applying a daily coat of nail strengthened. I also used a hand lotion that didn’t feel oily but worked with my hands.

personally i think my polish protects my nails from damage like snags and hitting my nails on things, and so for me the benefits of the polish protection far outweighs any damage the nail polish itself is doing. so i have found that keeping my nails polished has led to longer stronger nails for me!

I have the Tweezerman nail products and they truly are great nail care equipment. I started glass filing my nails 20 years ago and will never go back to emery boards or metal nail files. Glass files are also, as Dr. Ellis pointed out, easy to keep clean. This was a great video. I'm going to start incorporating oil treatments into my nail care.

After working in a covid vaccine clinic, washing or gelling my hands 80 times in a half day, my nails were shot. Nothing helped, not supplements or even the weekly oil treatments. Finally I started using “Healthy Hoof” at least twice a day, but really as many times as I could remember, I would use it. After a few weeks the peeling at the edges was improved and as I kept at it, the improvement increased. I use it now at least at bedtime, and my nails have never been so strong.

I've always had good strong nails (thanks, Mom!) that would grow magnificently all spring and summer and then dry out and break in the dryer part of the year. I knew how to deal with that. Now that I swim in a pool daily they're softer and split in a different way. I'm taking oral collagen, using oil after swimming and hand cream. It took over six months but I'm seeing improvement. Thanks for the video!

i love making my own nail oil with jojoba, castor, olive and vitamin e oil together the main oil being jojoba and i add in some lemon and tea tree and lavender oil to smell nice and relaxing and use it all the time. i also love the rescue x from cnd and even apply it over my nail polish and under my free edge and it really helps keeps my nails strong and love doing warm oil soaks too and love opi glass nail file and i only use regular polish as i have tried gel and dip diy but always have had allergic reactions and now know just to stick to normal polish. I also very careful with pushing back cuticles and use a remover to help soften them beforehand. i use hand cream all the time and love cuticle butters like burt's bees. i also tend to wear latex free gloves to bed with some oil and hand cream on so it can really sink in overnight both when i have polish on and with bare nails too. i like my nails to be longer than my finger tip but not so much that i can't do anything. i use to bite my nails and pick my skin so i found keeping them shaped well and soft and hydrated and polished helps me not to pick at them. the revlon cuticle oil is also a dupe for the cnd solar oil too and i love them both too.

My Mom & I always had thin, flat nails that also had a tendency to curl under as they grew. We did ask nurses what could be causing it & they never had any answers. I do take vitamins - Vit C, Bilberry, Ocuvite ( for eyes) & PEA ( fatty acid also for eyes). They can grow straight but I find water can be the enemy so other than washing my hands, I tend to use rubber gloves for everything around the house. Dermatologist, Dr Dray says there have been no hard studies that show Biotin does anything. Any advice welcome. ❤️

Thank you for commenting on Biotin. Sooo many ‘people’ (doctors and others) recommend biotin for hair, skin and nails. My best friend is a physician and she said that this gets repeated so often by doctors that it has become a fact. In truth, biotin has NEVER been scientifically proven (to date) that it can grow hair and nails. Biotin has been ‘touted’ to grow hair and nails meaning it was used as a marketing tool and somehow became popular to repeat in the medical field. Now, I’m always skeptical of a doctor that prescribes biotin especially before getting any results of blood work.

Thank you for this video. I will try the Kerasal, which I already have. I have been using the iconic cuticle cream, Dior Crème Abricot , since the 70’s. There’s nothing that works as well on the market. It’s very thick and is used at night before bed. It makes your nails and cuticles look so healthy and like you have had a manicure. It’s not easy to find, and is pricey, but you only need a tiny bit and it is worth it, as it lasts a long time and has superb efficacy.

What about wearing standard nail polish to protect your nails? I remember growing up and being told that we need to let our nails 'breathe', but it wasn't until I was an adult that I learned that nails don't breathe, and the plate isn't living anyway. Any necessary nutrients and oxygen get provided by our blood. So since they don't need to breathe, could wearing regular polish often (not gel), help protect our nails by acting as a barrier to minimize trauma/damage? 🤔

I find using a nail buffer to seal the tips of my nails helps make them super smooth. I had heard this makes it less likely for them to expand and contract with getting wet (not sure if that is true) but since I have been doing this my nails rarely split, peel, or break. When I do mistreat them and have problems I have good results with Nailtiques formula 2.

My nails got so brittle after menopause. I had splitting and even some lifting which is devastating after having gorgeous nails my whole life. I starting putting Aquaphor on bare nails once or twice per day (Especially at night so it stays on for hours) and it solved the problem. If I'm slacking then I have a problem again so I make it part of my nighttime routine now.

How long of a break do you recommend giving your nails from dip manicures? And how often!! I have always been a nail and cuticle picker, first with my teeth, then I got a hold of real cuticle clippers and it was game over…. until I started getting dip manicures and I completely stopped picking at & around my nails! However, when I stop getting dip, my bad picking habits come right back😭

Thoughts about being in healthcare and needing to wash our hands frequently? Also, there is concern about sterility and wearing nail polish for surgeries. Do you adhere to a no nail polish philosophy as a clinician performing surgery? I use the Bare Hands polisher to give my nails a pretty glossy sheen without polish -but good to know I might be damaging my nail plate if I do this too frequently!

Hi, thank you Dr Sam, paraffin bath treatments are not mentioned in your youtube discussion, not sure if they were so 1990s, I have found that AVEDA products are great for the hands, the professional massage oil from AVEDA is kind to the hands and skin, as I can compare it to other oils on the market including food grade oils from the grocery store. Favourite hand cream would be the AVEDA hand relief, the ella bache hand and cuticle cream at least for the cuticles. Kora organics noni oil for the cuticles and the AVEDA hydrating lotion as a light lotion when I don't want the feeling of a heavy film after washing my hands if I am going to lash out. The AVEDA hand relief does wash off, however it does leave a barrier of softness and oil.

the only time in my life that I've had strong long nails was the summer I lived in Barcelona and was eating a ton of seafood, for what it's worth.

I love nail polish. I don't do gel or dip powders, though. Looks too involved to either put on or take off. And thankfully I've found an acetone free remover that is fast at removing regular polish. My downfall is moisturizing on a regular basis whether or not I'm wearing polish.

How should you cut them? Straight? Curved in the corners? To avoid grown-in nails

One time I tried to cut my cuticles at home (before I knew) because they were really bad. I ended up cutting my proximal nail fold and now I have two reasons for never touching a cuticle cutter again.
