The thing he does with the first woman is also quite obvious. "And just have literally the the ehm, the hand pointing at one of the numbers." When he says Hand, he points upwards. That way, she links the word hand to the number 12. She already automatically linked the word hand with clock-hand. So by that, she links the number 12 with the clock-hand and thinks the big clock-hand is on the 12. The same thing is done with the minutes, but then with the number 17.
I get how he does the first one, he skips the number two. Then when he says if he wants to stay exactly at 2 o clock, he nods his head, and when he says if he wants to guess x mins past two, he shakes his head. The second one, the way he makes her choose 12, is right before he asks her to choose, he places his hand in the 12 position. For the minutes, he puts his hand in the aproximate position of 17. Anything between the hour 3-4 would have passed in that case.
OK here's how this one works. The first time he says "so it goes around 1, ummm (thinks), 3 and it would go round that way yes? (this justifies the missing number)". Then he says, "lets go for minutes" when he says "on the hour" he nods his head and when he says the other possibilities he shakes it. The second time round as he names the hand (hour or minute) he gestures the position and then he simply adds other possibilities after. It's important he says "you have the minute hand" first time.
@Gonzebo He also uses hand gestures on the first two he moves his hand from top to bottom while asking about the hour hand influencing the people to pick 12!
and for the second one, the woman, makes a hand motion that suggests the hour hand pointing directly upwards when he asks about the hour hand. When he asks about the minute hand you can see the sweeping motion going from the left to the right side of the clock (where 15 minutes would be). No idea how she guessed the 17 minutes, but i might say there was something in the last gesture going slightly downward? Havent been able to find anything in his words though.
Indeed basically people are following Derren, this is suggestion. When the people are very absorbed with Derren (good rapport) this goes passed them unnoticed.
does nobody really see what Derren is doing here? I don't mean to discredit him; derren is basically my idol. For the first man, listen to what derren says at 1:05 "Just imagine a clock face with the number going 1... 3.. 4.. 5.." He skips the number 2, which you don't realize consciously, but your subconscious focuses in on it because it breaks the pattern you would've normally followed the counting numbers.
to know how he did this u have consider not only his verbal speech but the setting. If you look carefully at 1:37 look at the man's background ull see a clock that says 2:00 thats where his vivid image in his mind came from. The same applies with that other lady there was a clock in that setting that had that same time. Although not all people are that easily manipulated.
No, the trick is that he moves his hand towards the place on the clock hand is...look at 2.20/2.21 when he says "the minute hand" he gestures just past the quarter mark on the imaginary clock
@moniapadme At 1:06 he clearly doesn't say anything at all. If you can hear Derren saying the "two" there you're hallucinating. It's a matter of suggestion, which is why he doesn't say it.
the second one, at 2:09 he points 12 twice then he counts 1,2,3 and he keep remake clock face and it emphasis clock start 12. 2:11~13 he moves his hand up and down straightline but not too big. this links clock hand at straight line which is 12. at 2:21 his hand sharply moved..and i think this finger is point where 17 would b. at 2:22 u can see his hand is little bit bent so that it's not really 15 but little lower. at 2:25 again left hand is on 17. well i just like to share my ideas :)
@kmelton1841 A common technique among mentalists and streetmagicperformances is something called pseudo hupnosis. It's not hypnosis like you fall asleep or anything, it's just a state they put you in so that you will get more open to suggestion than you normally would. Anyways, hypnosis in general is'nt what most people think it is.
i saw that, he points his arm upward.... you do not notice this if you were in her shoes as he sucks you in... these signals subconciously register in our minds
hmm i think i got the first one...(well some got it too) at 1:06 he mention 1 and he air tap once. relating number 1 is same as single tap. now he missed 2 but he taps twice. automatically matching since it's 2 tap it's number 2. now to emphasis on that 2, at 1:09 to 1:10 he moves left hand quickly to that 2 position and clicks..again making him to choose 2. for minute part, at 1:17 he says two and move his right up and down twice quickly. like the minute hand is straight line on 12 :)
how the hell does he do the 12:17 one tho? I was convinced she was gonna say 4 because he goes "1,2,3... if you could just do that FOR me". there didnt seem to be anything suggesting 12 there definitely didnt seem like anything for 17.
