I'm so proud to say I grew up with Derrick and his family right next door. Derrick was always a funny guy with a great sense of humor at a young age. I was not surprised that he did well in comedy. I'm also proud to say he's from Elizabeth. Much love and respect to him and he's family. Big ups D.

@@iisummeriii I don't know how old you are, but I'm around the same age, if not the same age, as ever one involved in the story. And that includes Bill Bellamy. So with that being said. I remember when Def Comedy Jam first came out, and I remember when dude did the character on Def Comedy Jam. It wasn't until this piece that he came back to mind. I saw him do the character years before there was a Martin show. You may say that he could have stolen the character from Martin, but that's highly unlikely. Because Martin Lawrence was the host of the show when he did the character on Def Comedy Jam. So, yeah. Ya boy stole that.

Sheneneh looks like a typical girl from the neighborhood, while Shante looks like a fly girl reject. Sheneneh is more masculine, and Shante is more feminine. Sheneneh's voice is deeper than Shante's, and Sheneneh doesn't have a mustache like Shante does. Sheneneh has conversations with herself, and Shante doesn't.

MARTIN show was written to include Derrick Fox and his character Shante. But when the offer was not accepted by Derrick for whatever reason the show writers could not go back and just take that character out. So Martin played it himself.

@@ButcherPeete Martin brought in lots of comedians for the show and gave them characters. The cast talked about it in one of the reunion interviews. Jerome, shenaenae and the little snotty nose guy were actually written for other comedians but filming schedule and contract negotiations killed all that. So when it came time to shoot the pilot, Martin just played em all.

I am here because I saw Bill Belamy and Aries Spears talking about Martin Lawerence stole this guy Derrick's whole set, and he based Shenaynay off of Shantae. I don't know, but Shenaynay is way funnier, even tho it shouldn't be, with a man in women clothing. Also I do know that MANY, MANY, MANY, MANY comedians steal each other's jokes. Some down to the T, verbatim. I've heard it in many different stand up specials.

I see why it's easy to compare the characters.... I never heard this story back in the day that's why this video is interesting.... I've been around show bizness for awhile and understand artist get screwed over in various ways..... Derrick definitely gives off a homosexual vibe when he transform into Shaunte..... I didn't really find the humor in this comedy skit...... His body language was giving off a downlow vibe..... I know Martin never was rumored to lay up with men....... Bill must bond with Derrick over beverages about this, and decided to mention this for viewership......

Martin has been doing the "Sheneneh" voice since at least 1987 during his stand-up days. Maybe, Martin took the name and the slogan. Sheneneh sounds like Shante. And Shante's "My name is Shante, and it's all about me" line makes me think of Sheneneh's "Cuz Sheneneh is a 'round the way filet, ahhhh" line, but I can't even confirm that Martin took those things from Derrick Fox.

After listening to Derrick tell his side. Martin didn’t steal Shante. They wrote Shante as a character on the Martin show which Derrick was supposed to be a writer and play the the role. Business is business after that ain’t that right FOX?
