Derrick May is a true living legend. As one-third of the Belleville Three, along with his schoolfriends Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson, he helped create what became Detroit techno - a movement that continues to influence the world three decades after its inception.
Detroit innovator Derrick May talked about the early years with Kevin Saunderson and Derrick May, the lessons learnt as a techno pioneer and what it takes to be a real musician in his RBMA Melbourne 2006 Lecture.

With multiple credible allegations of rape and theft, I'm surprised you haven't followed suit with Boiler Room and deleted this video.

I’ve met people like Derrick in the music and to be fair you take their curtness with a pinch of salt or sugar if you will. But they speak a truth, which we’re not ready for; there’s an enlightened one amongst us all, I wasn’t ready for them, but after years away from it. It makes sense. Bless up all in this music thing. Stay positive

Why is this interviewer so disrespectful? I almost can't watch this because it feels so uncomfortable. Good thing that Derrick May is dropping his knowledge anyway.

The best definition of a musician that I stand by is by Genesis P.Orridge of the Industrial band Throbbing Gristle "anything that makes a sound is an instrument, and anyone that can make it make a sound is a musician"

My Mentor. Such a icon. Best DJ ive ever seen in the Techno/ House scene. Out of all the three Derrick is much more elaborate about the music itself. Kevin and Juan were much more into the producing side of things.

@ 49:00 I would have to fully agree with Derrick here. Him stating that going full digital and fully dependent on computers to make our music can definitely kill the soul or human element in the music. I've been noticing this massively in the current stages of Techno / House track coming out. You can clearly tell who and how the artist made the track simply by the emotions evoked in it. You feel no passion from the music. Just a hollow machine with no sentiment. So it doesn't connect with the audience.
@abrahampalmer8761
@abrahampalmer8761 2 года назад
Agreed that's why I only listen to old school artists such as Derrick Juan and Kevin Jeff Mills etc... That type of music make you FEEL instead of artificial digital nonsense that people love so much especially younger people in particular.

For those who don't know, Derrick May was friends with Thomas Barnett, Blake Baxter and Eddie Fowlkes and had them come over to his place to use his equipment and record tracks. Derrick then stole their tracks, including Nude Photo and released them under Rhythm Is Rhythm. The piano section from Strings of Life was performed by Mike James and although he was credited, Derrick May has never paid Mike any royalties. I've seen conversations between Derrick and Mike where Derrick promised to pay Mike and nothing materialised. Chez Damier introduced Mike to Derrick in to 80s and in a later conversation, Derrick promised on their friendship to pay Mike his portian of the royalties. Again, nothing materialised. There's also women coming forward internationally to speak about their negative experiences with Derrick. We're talking about some serious allegations. Derrick's career rode off those tracks, which weren't his. Mike's exposing Derrick and a book is due to go on sale with a full expose. Coincidentally, Mike has started to receive threatening calls and messages.

He also comes across as very arrogant too. Comparing House producers to Jazz musicians? It always amazes me how these people become so worshipped, just for pressing a few buttons?

Derrick May finally comes clean in this interview, I'm glad he spoke out about Chicago and the legendary Ron Hardy being so influential to his scene but Techno should not be credited to Detroit or a thing at all aside from the German scene. his breakout 1987 "strings of life" single is a straight up house track even if as he says "didn't want to make songs that sounded like their stuff but just stuff that they would play in Chicago" well that's not what happened, it sounds exactly like Chicago's stuff that predates it and should not be labeled techno because there's nothing in it that distinguishes it from House. And there's countless examples of that in the so called techno sub genre, Inner city's "good life", Juan atkins's "no ufos" another literal house track but it gets labeled as techno...wtf is techno about it? the fact it was made in detroit? come on man it's time this gets corrected, "THE TRUTH SHALL SET YOU FREE"! detroit techno is just straight up chicago house music, specifically acid.
