If you penetrate the brusque Black Country exterior you'll discover a very different Des Taylor from the 'big man with the big opinions' tag that's dogged him for decades.
True, even at 61 the big-fish man from Worcestershire is more passionate than ever about his sport but, he claims, he has never deliberately courted controversy. In our latest Life in Angling interview, he reveals his softer side...

Fantastic to hear another of my heroes from years ago talking. For a long time I have read his articles and to put the actual man to the stories is great. Another one of the great men of the times.

Its so true about people forgetting or not caring about nature now days, even im the same now when I carp fish, I dont pay half as much attention to nature around me as I did years ago when I fished rivers and roach and so on, i loved seeing snakes, birds, wildlife of any kind and took much more in. Now days its about tackle, bites, fish and how to get them and most of its spent inside a bivvy watching the rods. Makes me think really.
@portcullis5622
@portcullis5622 4 года назад
It's never too late to change. I developed my lifelong love of natural history from fishing and being beside rivers. I often wonder how carp anglers can spend days and nights by the water and not be interested in, or curious about, the trees, flowers, birds and insects. The wildlife and the habitats are as important to me as the fish. That is why I only fish scenic stretches of river and beautiful old lakes and ponds. I would rather struggle to catch one decent fish in such surroundings than catch lots of easy fish from a new, ugly water.

Weather it's fishing, bowling, darts or any other sport there are always those who're willing to speak up about what they feel is wrong in their sport and there are always numpties who speak against them for some reason. Give me a passionate, outspoken, advocate anytime and they'll get my support.

it's good when anglers, from a generation gone by can really impart some wisdom into the sport to inspire younger anglers, and usually teach them a thing or two. Sadly for me, Des isn't this kind of character, he's just a reminder of all those things from the 70's, that i'd rather forget, and a bit of sanctimonious know it all.
