I think for miyokichi more than the rejection it's the condescension from Kiku that truly got to her. With the life that she has lead with all those hardships and still finding the will to continue finding ways to make peace with it but here was Kiku a man telling her she needed to find another job that wasn't being a mistress and how she needed to stop being dependent as if the her life till now had no meaning at all because of the work she did and it was that which really affected her. she couldn't help but direct her resentment at kiku for it. I think her character in essence is extremely modern but the hand she was dealt by the society relegated her to the role of "the other women", "the women who has to find a man who would love her to escape the hardships of her life"...when noone accepted her in those roles, she chose the role of the woman who got her revenge no matter what and stuck to her resentment. In that time, in that land, sticking to her resentment for Kiku was her way of sticking up for herself even if it came at the cost of a possible better future with someone else.

I love both Sukeroku and Kiku. They have eachothers strengths and flaws. One's hardworking the others talented but a bum. If they were the same person they'd be perfect. Kiku's too traditional to save his love with Miyokichi, or to save Rakugo from itself, decisions a visionary like Sukeroku wouldn't make. Meanwhile Kiku is able to conform and put himself in the positions Sukeroku won't allow himself to. We dislike Sukeroku because he's lazy and want him to work harder. Kiku works harder but isn't likeable because he's not someone like Sukeroku. I'm only as caught up as you guys are but I like to defend both. As much as Sukeroku is a bum he's still loved by those he depends on, which I think is his value. He is a good person and you see it in his motivation for Rakugo, he lives to make people happy. Kiku only did it for himself at first, yet he is a provider for Sukeroku and recently Konatsu despite being unlikeable.

I love this section of the story, this is when the author really starts to peel back the layers of these characters. I love how every character has these moments where their words and actions don't line up, and it's up to us to speculate what their true intentions/desires are. Really enjoying re-experiencing this story with y'all P.S. Allen I feel like you've mentioned enjoying historical fiction so I'm recommending Golden Kamuy, which is set in Hokkaido during the aftermath of the Russo-Japanese War. I know you already get way too many anime recs but I DON'T CARE. This one is worth being annoying for

don't think I have time to watch this but wanted to comment here to support this happening. I ADORED the anime and the fact that you guys are bringing more attention to it is making me want to both rewatch and read for the first time. THANK YOU. Bon having effeminate tendencies and playing women better suggests that he might be gay and have feelings for sukeroku/shin. The gay guy who acts (overly) effeminate is a trope in manga
