A co-worker of mine that I worked with for about 20 yrs. was an entomologist. We spent a lot of time in the outdoors with various research projects. I mentioned one day to him how I never seemed to see any "horny toads" as they were so common when I was growing up in the Arizona desert. He said that their main food source, the Red Pavement ant had been greatly reduced as the ant's main diet was the puncture vine ("bull head" thorns). The puncture vine had become a nuisance plant around residential neighborhood, so scientists imported a species of beetle that laid its eggs on the "bull head" which is actual a seed pod. When the beetle eggs hatched & became larvae they ate the "bull head" seeds and the plants slowly died out. As a result the ant populations were also greatly reduced. Red ants contain acetic acid which helps "horny toads" digest their food. So finally the "horny toads" also started dying out. This is just one case where overly zealous scientists think they are solving one problem only to upset the delicate balance of nature & negatively impact the lives of other animal species. If you look at a "horny toad} closely they seem to have a third eye between their eyes, As children we had been told that they squirt blood out of that third eye. Actually they squirt blood out of the corner of their eyes when picked up or threatened by a predator by rapidly increasing their blood pressure. A couple years ago I was camping with my son-in-law & two grandchildren along the Mogollon Rim. I told them the story of the blood coming out of their eye. So I slowly bent over and gently caught the "horny toad" & it immediately shot out a stream of very bright blood that luckily only hit my forearm.

What a great video, James! Thanks for letting me have some input, that is really cool of you. What you called a "sun spider" I encountered all over the Middle East, and we always referred to them as "camel spiders." I actually had no idea they even existed in North America, so thanks for educating me. Of course, I really enjoyed watching the 001 Snake Eater make its debut on the channel. Keep up the great work my friend!

The prickly pears are almost ready for harvest! Yumm! I always set up another chair, too, when solo camping. Keep anyone coming into your camp uninvited guessing. Here's a suggestion for your next trip into the mountains - collect some fatwood for fire starting. Pinon pine is very pitchy - easy to collect the pitch off the trees and fatwood, as well. I use the pitch to make a pinon pine salve.

I'm on the other side of the state. The rattlesnakes on this side aren't rattling as much. The professional consensus seems to be that the wild pigs can find and kill em easier when they rattle. So they don't. THAT is scary. A rattler that doesn't rattle.

Great video James👍👍 Nice camp in the desert, fire, food and music thanks to Cuervo. Being a New Mexico native living about 5+ hrs north of you, I've seen all those animals as well plus some not mentioned as you indicated. Good discussion on the wildlife you've seen. Camping in the southwest can be a challenge, especially during the hot, dry summer when pesky bugs won't leave you alone, I can't wait for cooler weather, fall can't be beat for camping. Thanks for the trip and work bringing me along, good time bro. A freak accident has me recovering at home for 6 to 8 weeks, keep getting your boots dirty for me to enjoy okay.

Nice we get to see the snake eater in action again and again and again wicked sweet 😂. I’m not a patreon member but I have a great idea for a video can we see a really long in depth video on the snake eater 😊. FYI peppers can be hot not that someone that uses them in a number of videos like u would know that 😜
