Is Desert Eagle really useless?
We take a closer look at the operating system of the most powerful semi-auto handgun in the world to see if it really has any use or if it's just a gimmick.
Žiga points out some of the drawbacks of Desert Eagle design and ergonomics and quite possibly finds the main reason why this interesting handgun is still far from being forgotten.

My dad is retired marines. We always used to go by cabellas and he would point out the massiveness of the de. He would never buy something like that for himself. I went home one Christmas but did not have enough money for a bus ticket to get back to school. So he pawned his 9mm and a 22 I think. Couple years go bye and I had enough money to return the favor. Ended up getting him the 50ae that he would never buy for himself one Christmas, and retold that story that he had since forgotten. One of the few times I have ever seen him cry.

@@sqike001ton There are both .357 and .44 Magnum Desert Eagles. The rimmed cartridge isn't great for semi-auto use but it's akin to using .22LR in a semi-auto (it does work, there just needs to be an overlap so the cartridge rims don't interlock). I sincerely considered buying a .357 Desert Eagle once and even saw a used .44 DE for a surprisingly reasonable price at my local gun shop. That was a lot of years ago and at this point I haven't gone shooting in so long I don't even know if I can hit a target anymore. I also sold my .44 revolver. Anyway... the .357 holds 9+1 and .44 holds 8+1 and both of the smaller magnums are a wee bit smaller and easier to carry.

You better read this which the brain dead do not comprehend, and there is a simple solution to cycling as you think If your reloading and got all these problems. You have not got any experience to talk And need to reject your video ! I have a desert eagle and I reload, and use full max reloading, And do not get the problems you acquired and complain about. First of all you are definitely holding and firing the beast the WRONG WAY ! If you follow the stupidity of not learning for yourself how to fire the gun properly, you will always have a negative attitude, and deserve the stupidity of not knowing and being stuck learning for yourself. I have a very very small hand and wanted something to stop big bears while in the wilderness , So here is your faults explained how to use the gun properly and very effectively. HOLD the gun properly [different from the way you have been shown] Place the RIGHT hand on the gun normally, But the left hand is different, Make use of the beaver tail. PUT YOUR THUMB BEHIND IT THE BEAVER TAIL ! NOT FORWARD AS THE ONES WHO DO NOT THINK ! The slide should not cut your finger off. Is that not what it is for? Next you twist with the right hand forward, BUT THE LEFT HAND YOU TWIST BACKWARDS. And for an advantage if you can reach the index finger of the left hand in front of the trigger guard, all the better. Also you can use some hockey tape around the handle grip as I have done. OUCH DID I SAY SOMETHING WRONG? This stops the gun from kick back and prevents the gun from not loading completely. It also stops you from jerking forward in anticipation of when fired, Then if you get smart enough to think Reloading to help stop the bullets from getting hung up on reload into the chamber Use a little brain power and shorten the length of the bullet by about 10 thou, and it will also make a difference NO MISFIRE OR HANGUPS, IF YOU DO IT RIGHT SORRY I CONDEMN EVERY THING YOU SAID ABOUT THIS DESERET EAGLE

I had a long-term assignment in Texas back in the late 90's. In my off time, I used to go to the Bullet Trap, a store and indoor range that would let you rent guns on their range. One day I'm at a station on one side of the range and I hear this enormous explosion. Now, I'm wearing muffs and ear plugs, but this sound was incredible. I turned right, expecting to see some poor S.O.B. with gun parts embedded in his face. Nope, he was wailing away with a Desert Eagle .50. The range had sound deadening panels on the ceiling, and every time he fired, particles of those panels would shake loose from the pressure wave from the gun. Before I left that assignment I decided, with some trepidation, to try out the Desert Eagle. I'm a small guy with small hands and I really didn't want to embarrass myself by firing the gun and have it fly out of my hands. Well that didn't happen, thankfully, nor did I tattoo my forehead with any part of the gun. I had a nice fist sized group at 7 yards my first time. I didn't shoot it a lot; those rounds cost $1.62 a piece.

In 44 magnum it makes a lot more sense. It's really controllable, since it's designed to handle the higher caliber. Plus, it's a gas operated pistol. It's worth owning just because of it's awesome design.

If your reloading and got all these problems.

I bought a desert eagle .44 mag in my younger years before the .50 AE came out. Then I got married and had a kid. This was my bedside home defense system. I left the chamber empty, because there was no way my young son could've pulled back that slide to chamber a round. My wife couldn't even do it, lol. Also, they're correct about the ammo. If you shoot reloads, they have to be hot. Factory ammo also. I still have this weapon that I bought way back right around 1990.

To summarize, not incredibly useful outside of extreme circumstances even in self defense, but incredibly fun. Its kinda like any rifle that shoots 50 BMG. When you understand what the desert eagle was designed to do everything about it makes perfect sense, she was designed to put bullets through the engine blocks of cars while not weighing 30 lb (like how a rifle in that caliber would weigh.) She was designed for the guy who sits at a checkpoint all day, and when someone acts a fool she puts holes through them, and field tests show she's very, very good at that.

I reckon blockman is referring t o Barret with the 30 lb gun. The truth is, Desert Eagle was the product of magnum research (Yes, exactly what you think that entails). They designed a gun that can handle .50 caliber and a lot of powder.. And then they went to downsize to have more of reasonable, but still larger pistol caliber. Like John's (above in the comments) .44 DE the biggest 'practical' DE Magnum Research intended, because a lot of armed forced DID use .44 back then. However, since big gun is fun gun, .50 caliber started getting interest all around the globe so Magnum Research was like "Fuck it, let's manufacture in the Big boy bullet size too"

The next one might be debateable, BUT I removed the bolt hold open spring and plate from one of my mags and since then I have had no issues. It seems to me it you like load the mags and push the bullets out by hand, it seemed like the follower would get stuck right before the bolt hold open would come threw. What's great about the desert eagle is that you have the autoloader equivalent to high power revolver rounds like 454 casull while still not killing your wrist. I've dumped mags with one and was fine. Can't say the same after a cylinder full of casull in a gun that was chambered for 460 s&w. The revolver was heavier due to needing to be able to fire the 460, so the 454 round's recoil should have been dampened a little because of the denser metal in the frame. A single cylinder full was enough for me. My wrist didn't hurt afterwards, but it would have if I kept shooting. I tried the 460 rounds after firing the 454. Wrist hurt pretty good after a cylinder full for about 10 minutes or so.
