Desert Eagle: The Pop Culture Icon Nobody Uses - Loadout

A heavy duty hand cannon with an imposing title and a big bang to match, the Desert Eagle is one of the most famous handguns in history. It appears in hundreds of movies and games, from The Matrix to Call of Duty, Max Payne to Austin Powers, but despite its prominence in our favorite media, it is seldom seen in the real world. So how did a gun that sees almost no serious use get so much pop culture attention?
In this episode of Loadout, Dave Jewitt visits the Royal Armouries to talk to Keeper of Firearms & Artillery Jonathan Ferguson to find out why the Desert Eagle might not be the all-conquering weapon that games and movies would have you believe.

The .50 AE is, technically, 12.7x33, that is to say the bullet is 12.7 millimeters, mated to a 33 millimeter case. The .500 S&W Magnum, meanwhile, is 12.7x41. It has another 8 millimeters of case, and a commensurate larger load of propellant. So, the .50 ae isn't even the most powerful handgun round. Meanwhile, the .50 BMG is 12.7x99. It's a significantly larger bullet, and a massively larger case, with, again, an even greater power. Interestingly, not only are rifle/machinegun rounds longer than a pistol one, but it is in fact also wider. Handguns count "caliber" as the distance between the lands of the barrel. Rifles count it between the lands. This means that the .50 AE and the .500 S&W have a bullet that is 0.5 inches across. The .50 BMG, meanwhile, is actually 0.51 inches.
@hess8569
@hess8569 2 года назад
It's for close range and has stopping power. If someone is wearing body armor a smaller sized bullet may not stop them from being able to pull out their gun and return fire. If you smack someone in the chest with body armor using .50 mm round they're probably going to at least fall over if not break ribs and knock them out. Plus, the pistol is more concealable vs a shotgun or small auto rifle.

For that, something like a Super Redhawk would be more practical than a Desert Eagle. No persnickety gas system to deal with, easier to legally acquire, and available in cartridges even more powerful than .50 AE (like .454 Casull, which is definitely a bear-killing cartridge).
@gameragodzilla
@gameragodzilla 2 года назад
@@yetanother9127 Eh, .454 Casull has similar muzzle energy to some of the hotter loaded .50AE rounds, and the Desert Eagle does have a higher capacity (7+1 vs. 6) and less recoil due to said gas system as well as being semi auto. So the Desert Eagle is practical in that sense, although the gas system does also mean it's more maintenance intensive. As a Desert Eagle owner I can can confirm that they are heavy (weigh nearly 5lbs unloaded), impractical, expensive ($1699 and up) and awkward to handle for newcomers. However they are a fun range toy and can definitely be used in a self defense role. Granted you'd probably take care of the threat in front of you and who ever was unfortunate enough to be on the other side of the wall behind them. The 357 variant is probably the most practical in terms of cost (ammo) and actual utility. Unless you've got an out break of bears, T-rex, tigers (the tank) or the sudden urge to to dislocate your wrist whilst taking down that pesky government satellite.

As the proud owner of a desert eagle 50ae, I'm happy to say that I love it and is my most favorite possession that I own. But that being said, I can also attest to the fact that it is slow, heavy, and thus inaccurate (certainly at least if you don't have the strength and grip to steady it). Another problem with it that is rarely mentioned (a fact rarely covered with any gun) is the fact that it's high maintenance. I say that because I made the rookie mistake of not cleaning the thing for a while after using it and found out the hard way that if a gun gets too much powder in it, it can rust all the parts and lock it, which is especially bad considering that desert eagle has to be a pretty well tuned in order to handle all that power. But I managed to get it fixed and I'm happy to say it's working again, but I have come to say from experience though that it is certainly not a gun for everybody. Me on the other hand, I liked it for its power and appearance; and if power comes with a price this is one of those times I gladly paid it.

Not entirely true. The .50 yeah definitely. The thing has so much recoil that it's not practical to use but there's also the micro eagle and baby eagle models that use a variety of different calibers. 9mm or 40 are actually usable and have very little recoil seeing how the weapon is actually made out of steel rather than carbon fiber. The baby eagle is still pretty large though. Unusable for people with small hands. The ex wife couldn't reach the slide release. I could operate it without any issues just fine though.

3:30 Fun trivia: The M6D in Halo CE was directly inspired by the desert eagle, but because Bungie loves the number 7, they chambered their super pistol in 12.7x40mm by adding 7 to the 12.7x33mm .50 AE. S&W would later come out with a 12.7x41mm cartridge, which is the closest real approximation. If there's ever been a 12.7x41mm self loading handgun, I've never heard of it.

For me, that's the very reason I chose the Dirt Bird! Gas-operated, rotating (and very mutated-AR-looking) bolt, polygonal rifling. The versions with bolt-on and integrated compensators are both bonkers. The 10" barreled model is beyond absurd. It's just so weird, while the Grizz truly is just a giant 1911. The LAR makes the widely-available MR gun look like a bargain as well: the only LAR I've seen in person a few years ago was used, albeit in factory-floor mint condition, and the seller was asking $2,950. And it was in puny .357. At a glance on GunJoker, I see a 45WinMag with a starting bid of $2,450, and another with a 'buy-it-now' of $4,525. Fallout New Vegas even has a 12.7mm (aka .50) pistol which is clearly using small pistol bullets akin to .50 Action Express. It also looks nothing like a Desert Eagle, but at least it's chambered in 12.7mm. Smh at this 10mm comparison though, makes no sense.

A gun store I frequent had one that might as well leave via a revolving door. It was this tacky, gold-colored, tiger-striped monstrosity. It would get picked up by someone with expendable income, brought to the range once or twice, then sold right back to the gun store when the owner realized it was an overpriced, unfun, expensive novelty act that was too tacky to even show off with a straight face.

buddy of mine makes his own ammo, he let me shoot diffrent guns and his favorite magnum calibar was a revolver, not the Deagle. It totally makes a diffrence on recoil, how much blackpowder there is in your ammunition. It can have as little of a recoil as a normal handgun, either way, the experience was great since im not too knowledgable or used to guns, living in europe.

I've heard the Desert Eagle compared to the Lamborghini. Its loud, its prohibitively expensive, it has no practical porous whatsoever, but you still want one and you dont know why.

5:44 they're wrong the .50 action express was designed to take down specifically bears because if a grizzly, brown or black bear are charging at you to make you it's lunch, then you probably want a Deagle with a .50 action express.
