I always keep a thermos of very hot water handy when working with drip irrigation. Just dip the hose in the hot water for a few seconds and it becomes nice and pliable and makes connecting to fittings easy. When it cools, the tubing shrinks back to shape.
BTW I also plant marigolds bc they also keep pests away... And a "quick tip" (from us Canadians) I use for my apple & cherry trees is... I hang a bunch of aluminum pie plates from the branches, and it scares the birds away. (Just when the cherries and apples come out. If you don’t mind the look of it??? Very economical...) And, love your whole system 😍 I can't wait for your results 🌶🫑🥒🍅🫛🥕🥬🥝😋
@@benlipinski3818Nice idea but wont work well here in the SW desert, maybe up north because that Bucket plastic disintegrates in about a year when left outside year-round in our desert Sunny days. Hanging them up with 5 gallons (40 lbs) of water weight will only accelerate them falling apart from the stress of the weight.
Your Mom was smart. Marigolds are insect deterrents. Not only do the insects not like the smell, you can take the petals and soak them in water then strain them and use them to spray your plants and veggies. They also make a great hair conditioner along with sage, lavender and rosemary. You can dry the herbs and make a tea to pour over your hair.
My dad grew up on a farm. When he helped me plant my garden he always "watered in" the new plants. For example with a tomato, he would put water in the hole, then plant the tomato up to the first leaf, putting much of the stem into the ground. Then water it again once it was in the ground. I did notice that the ones I did with this method did better, then the ones I watered just from the top. Love your beds and your marigolds.
Having been an arid land farmer the only advice i would offer for smaller scale gardening in an environment like yours is do not underestimate the wind. I can see and hear it in the video, it will dry everything out quicker than anything else and do it even at night. Personally i had to create wind breaks to protect from both west and north, iron fence, rows of trees and shrubs, then a second fence just to protect a 1/2 acre or 2000 square mtr plot of garden, i also planted on the east side of every building / shed, this way is protected from the west and only gets half a days sun in the blazing Australian summer.
At the end of the line just have an extra bit of hose that it’s held up to the height of the top of the refill bucket. Leave it open. That way if you forget to fill the bucket and it drains you won’t have to bleed the air out again from all the cotta cups 💕💕
If you see praying mantis eggs for sale in the garden section in Tucson I highly recommend buying some. I live in Phoenix and found some at Lowe’s, they all (150-200 of them) just hatched and are successfully defending my garden from aphids and caterpillars
I love praying mantis! As well as being useful for the garden, they are so cool to watch. One of the few bugs that I'm not afraid of. I recently moved, and just realized I have not seen any in my yard or the neighborhood (currently, the only thing I've seen in my garden are very large grasshoppers, and a handful of small lizards. Fortunately, the grasshoppers aren't eating anything... which is kinda strange). It's cool to know that you can buy them. I'll have to look online to see if I can get them shipped. I know the Lowe's, and HD here in Yuma wouldn't have them.
I have a desert garden. Last year I planted brussel sprouts for my first time. All of them had lots of bugs. I tried diluted dish soap but it didn't help.
@@gowest5145 that sucks 😞 I am a total novice when it comes to vegetable gardens, so I don't have a whole lot of "tools" in my tool box. I would've done the same thing. I did sugar peas, twice over the winter. The first time they got a few inches tall, and then started dying from the bottom up (same thing happens when I try tomatoes). Figured they weren't getting enough sun, so tried again in my other bed. This time they actually produced a handful of pea pods (just like my tomatoes), then they started dying from the bottom up again. I guess I'm going to have to start googling, and watching more gardening videos... again 😏
Oh my! You just solved 30 year desert gardening drip irrigation issues for me. I have tried tubing above the beds (evaporation), the plugs you stick in beside the plants (sand/dirt clogs), drip irrigation hoses (desert heat breaks them up). I also have been researching ollas. 1 4x8 kit ordered. If it works as shown and promised, I will need 6 or 7 more! Yes, I know that I can diy craft them and dig bigger holes, but at 73 with arthritic hands & knees, kits are easier for me! Thanks for posting this video.
@@mycinnamongirl Yes, I agree it is cheaper. I tried this a few years ago but digging the bigger holes was very difficult for me. Also more difficult to keep them filled. Then there is the problem of making sure you don’t break the bigger pots due to not correctly gsuging the size of the buried pot.
Hi guys. Just started watching your site…love it. Today’s installment with the raised garden beds was great, especially the irrigation system. I’ve been doing raised beds for many years, but fortunately for us water isn’t as much of a concern. Still may take a look at it for its water preservation properties. All that said, one thing you may want to consider is the height of your bird protection, and the eventual need to stake your tomato plants. In fact, from what I could see, most of your plants will outgrow the hardware cloth very quickly. However, don’t despair! You need doggie protection, right? Well, that hardware cloth can make short fencing along the inside of the beds! Drive sturdy sticks (about 4ft x 1/2 inch or so, with about a foot or two above the soil) into the soil around the inner edges of the beds, and then zip tie the hardware cloth pieces to the sticks. Works great, trust me. If you run out of your scrap hardware cloth, you can get rolled chicken wire cheaply (you may already have scraps) and use that. It looks like you only need it to be about a foot or so above the beds to prevent those little guys from getting into your dinner. For bird protection, these little fences provide nice sides to attach bird netting. It’s inexpensive at Lowe’s, and you literally drape it over stuff. Works great for other wildlife pilferers, too, as they hate messing around with that stuff! If you get a big piece, carefully unfold it on a non-windy day and cut to sizes you want, to save money. Or you can get smaller pieces (maybe 8ft long x 6 ft wide, not including the trellises). If you want the trellises covered, then wider pieces so it drapes down. Drape over your plants and leave it…the stuff will catch on the plants and stay put, even in wind. One thing, if growing viney plants like cukes, beans, etc, you will have to keep the vines from growing through the mesh, so I’ve never used it on my trellised veggies. If you feel you need it, however, then drive stakes (tall sticks higher than the trellised veggies) and then drape your mesh where they are. It’s ridiculously simple and cheap! To tend and harvest, just lift up the edges of the mesh. One more thing, watch for snakes in any trellised plants, as they love the shade, camouflage, and coolness of well watered plants. Just need to carry a stick and tap wherever you will stick hands or get close (sides and above). Don’t worry…they usually take off when this is done, and it won’t be a problem. Just basic dessert/warm climate safety. Good luck with it all. You guys rock!

Great progress. I’d move the water containers out of the beds fort about an extra square foot of growing space ! On benches or cinderblocks if you have some, etc etc
The way you suggested won't work, because the water needs to be near the plant in order for it be effective. Otherwise it would be watering the soil and not the plant.
Marigolds are also very good against soil eels ( a root eating small worm) just keep a few flowers of the ones you like most after blooming. They are very easily grown next year.
I like the olla system and have added Thirsty Earth to my list of gardening resources. I confess to a bit of jealousy to your garden. I have been gardening for decades in the urban desert but I don’t have a yard anymore. I was planning to transition to hydroponics before I moved into a small condo to save water. Now I’ve had to get creative with my space. My plan is a mix of hydroponic systems and planting dwarf varieties. My patio is 6’ by 9’ and I have a wicking bed system on 3/4 of the patio with a 23 gallon reservoir on a timer. I have a stacking tower on a 5 gallon reservoir. The pump in the reservoir is also on a timer. I have plans for an ebb and flow system later. I have LED greenhouse grow lights for supplemental lighting. Inside, I have a small NFT system under the kitchen peninsula and a DWC system in the walk in closet. (I have a total of five closets so…) I have grow lights and fans for ventilation in both areas. I do have to hand pollinate the indoor gardens😒. I have a micro greens set up that I will start up again as soon as I unpack it. I plan on trying sprouts in jars next to the herbs on the kitchen counter. I’m growing mostly micro dwarf varieties of tomatoes, cucumbers and melons. I have lettuce and seedlings in the kitchen NFT system and have mixed success. This year is my time to experiment and learn a new way to garden.
This was by far the coolest thing I’ve seen you do since I started watching I don’t know how long ago! I loved watching Ashley put those plants in the ground, it was so relaxing! This is the neatest system! I’m excited to see all the plants blooming and making good stuff to eat! It was nice to catch a glimpse of Adelei , too, we don’t get to see much of her these days. Everything you do always looks so completely, neatly, professionally done. I loved Ada getting her groove on in the background and the puppies with their love attack on Ashley! Great instinct! marigolds will also help with some pests around tomatoes and other plants and encourage pollinators. Perfect companion plant and also edible!
Nice job! You may know this you you can prick off all the bottom leaves of a tomato plant and burry the stem to the last 4 or 6 leaves. Roots will grow all along the buried stem. For this reason I always buy the leggiest tomato plant I can find. Any long branches you pruned off can be rooted in water to give you more plants.
Think about all the veggies that you can replant after you’ve cut. Ex: root end of bunching onions, the top of the carrots, the bottom of the celery, and of course potatoes that have sprouted and so many more. ( I’m sure Ashley knows all this)

I found out the hard way that Tomatillos can overwhelm a raised bed! They got 3 feet tall and crowded everything else out. You might want to put them on a awake near the house where they can spread out as much as they want. Also, plan on buying more garlic to put in the fall, Sept or Oct. they’ll grow all winter and you can use the leaves for cooking until the bulbs are ready to harvest about July

I like the block you put the reservoirs on. You always amaze me in the systems you build for your homestead! I like the "Y" connectors so you can go along each side. Thanks for explaining about the quick cut of the hose so there will be less leaks. I like the air relief screws in the buried terracotta ollas(waterers). That is such a wonderful watering system. Good idea to zip tie the reservoir handles to the trellises! Yum, salsa plants! Tomatoes, peppers, and onions! Cukes too! I put marigolds in too to keep pests down. I love the bells at the top of the trellises! Good idea to use the hardware cloth around the edges. We do two foot hardware cloth around our raised beds to keep our chickens out! One of our roosters still jumped in and wrecked a bed. The hens don't do that. We made wood frames to attach the hard cloth to so it's removable in one action. Yeah, dill and basil. Watch out, dill will take over! I grow my dill in a separate pot on our deck so it doesn't take over the garden. Yay, peas too, more cukes, and Luffa! We have 4 foot tall cylinders of woven metal fence with 6 inch spacing between the wire that we use as tomato cages and it's sturdy and works really well. There is plenty of room to stick your hand through the wire to grab the tomatoes. This looks amazing! Thanks for this video Longnecker family!
So beautiful! I miss planting tomatoes and peppers. My Indiana dad and mom who had marigolds in a planter on the front porch. We learned years later this was to keep mosquitoes away. And he had hummingbird feeders to go after mosquitos, too. Thank you for sharing your lives and adventures. 😊

I would love to share pictures with you but can't figure out how to attach them here. I'm an old man with a bad heart and this method allows me to keep gardening. I have used silver wrapping ribbon tied onto fencing to ward off birds... I have two tower planters on my deck and I got a bunch of spinner pinwheel things at the dollar store and put them into my planter spaces to keep my dogs away from them as I have had digging occur in planter dishes in the past. So far, so good.
When I am short on time, I would use the auger for drilling into compost to aerate it . . . instead of shoveling it. When I have the time, I would turn the whole pile.
Thank you so much for sharing the tip about removing T posts. I have injured my ribs twice trying to get t posts out of the ground and I have two big ones sunk in gravel right now and, for the life of me , I cannot get them out and now I’m afraid to try because of injuring my ribs! Also, I like your watering system. I have had to resort to putting garden pots on my carport roof to escape the plague of grasshoppers on the ground that annihilate most of my vegetables. I would like to try some thing like that system you are using. Thank you!
Just remember melon plants get HUGE and take up a lot of space, so I'm not sure how that's gonna work for those tiny beds with all the other plants in there. Love the system though and it will be interesting to see how it all works out in the end! 😊
I like how you tell the both good and negative aspects of the product. Perhaps they will modify or include a tube cutter that corrects the leaks in future product. I thought you would grow some of the tomatoes up those trellises.
It has to be a flat cut so it’ll seat at the o-ring just after the teeth . I worked in plumbing and several customers would return their quick connect fittings so we’d have to instruct them on how to install fittings. You can purchase a cutter that will cut per tubing and will work for this type of project
Ashley get you some shiny ribbon tye pieces around the trellis just enough to fly in the wind farmers use it to keep the birds off the fruit it should work the same way they don't like to see the reflection of light flashing about. Good luck
Maybe make a stand at the end of each bed for the 5 gallon buckets to have a little bit extra growing space, even if they were elevated a bit above the bed.

They are ground gophers , other vegetarian ,animals that like vegetables and herbs, out in the desert to eat your garden 😮 Sooner or later a fence around the garden will keep everything safe wonderful will keep all and other animals OUT! All of you guys done a good job 👍
I don't know about dogs, but cats seem to think mu garden beds make the bestest place to poop. I found moth balls keep them out. If anyone knows of a scent dogs don't like I am sure we could all appreciate input. That watering system looks great, I will have to check out their stuff. My beds are much larger and made of old metal doors from a school. They are great except its hard to get to the centers. My problem since moving here is the soil, last year I found a total of 4 worms, after MUCH amending we found worms, worms worms, maybe we will have more success with the garden this year. Knock on wood.

This is Magda Mienie from South Africa. May I suggest that you plant the tomatoes next to the trellis because the tomatoe plant's branches are not strong. When they fruit the tomatoes are lying on the ground. You can support the plant with the trellis. I wish I could plant a garden. Sadly I can't because we must move here. So to help you resolve the leaks after you shove the line in the connecter, pull back out on them a little and it's OK if the blue tab comes back out a little there supposed to. If the blue tab is pushed in the lines release. That's how you get the line out of the connector. Push in the line, hold the blue tab in and pull out on the line. Yall have grown your property so much its beautiful.
Just remember that zip ties will only last one growing season (or less), and will need to be replaced when they start failing (breaking). Twisted wire is not as easy to install, but won't need to be replaced. Great job on your raised garden system.
I've used spinners to keep birds away. I tried kids pinwheels first to see if it helps with great results so the ventured into garden spinners that not only keep birds away from my railings but also are so pretty. Congrats on planting!!!!!
Have to agree about the reservoir being removed to the outside of the garden space . Its taking up valuable planting space . I would build a stand at the end .

Hi from Saskatchewan Canada 🇨🇦! Marigolds grow very well in this northern climate. They keep the mosquitoes away. The petals are eatable. I also love that the blooms last a long time from spring to late fall. There are so many varieties and shades from yellow to bronze coloured. Different heights also variegated colours. The list goes on. Petunias also grow well here plus a few others. One thing for sure they gotta be tough to grow in this country!! All the best growing. Looking forward to seeing the trellis fill in. For your trees and maybe for your veggie beds also, go to someplace like Walmart to the fabric department and purchase netting. It is really cheap (about 99 cents per yard) and can easily be tied to your trees or trellis. Also, for weeds on your berms or near your raised beds, make homemade weed killer that is not only cheap but works. 1/2 gallon white distilled vinegar/1/4 of Epson salts/1/2 teaspoon Dawn Dishwashing soap. I mix it in a 2 gallon spray tank that you pump up and it applies easily. Obviously, don't get it on the trees and plants you want saved. Spray it on and in a few day, the weeds have died.

Nice workable watering system. In my Idaho Forest mountain vacation home I took red clay flower pots. Dug a trench and placed the pots into the trench or pit. Filled them with tightly rolled newspaper rolls and poured creek water onto the newspaper rolls and soaked them good. I pushed dirt around the pots. About three or so weeks went back and harvested large radishes. So the joya works devinely.
First of all, I love you guys. With the gardening and the birds, I may have an idea that you want to try out. Red and silver 1 inch bird tape and you tie it up so it can wiggle in the wind maybe 2 feet long and birds think it is fire, and therefore they will not land there, hang them from the trellises or on a stick or a tree nearby. That is the least invasive, affordable solution that I can think of. You might want to discipline your dogs and tell them no if they approach the plants or if they want to dig. You need to teach them what you want them to know. I enjoy watching you guys and I have been a fan of what you are doing, living off grid and off the land.
Tomato plants need support as they grow up. You planted the tomatoes plants far away from the wire trellis. Unless you plan to put sticks and tie them later. Awesome job, I love to follow the progress on your homestead!❤

Hey I have a tip for cutting that hose! Try a box cutter with a nice fresh razor blade. Especially if you give the tube small roll across a flat surface as you press the knife in, it should take very little force and help you align the cut squarely across the tube as it rolls. I'm imagining like the trick to strip wire with a box cutter when you don't have strippers. For the flat surface a cutting matt would be super ideal and one blade will stay sharp for a whole install. Thanks for the video. The tomatoes will grow very fast and likely won't like pressing into the wire mesh. I've found that dogs don't like messing with tomatoes/peppers/herbs/beans very much so it might be best to just see how it goes. Birds will get to everything unless 100% covered, but often want water more than anything (that's why they peck a fruit and leave it) so having a bird bath, while counter-intuitive, can reduce pressure. Just 2 cents.

If the plan is to grow food in the desert, you guys should try the tuna, they are the buds of a type of cactus, it's very common in Mexico, here in Argentina we also have them, they are very tasty, you can drink it fresh at breakfast, make jams or even liquor. I haven't seen Americans growing them, it can be an interesting content and the best part is that they grow in a very unattended way, don't need raised beds and need very little water.

Add a bic pen to your kit. Cutting the pipe will flatten it a bit, so you use the tip of your bic pen and poke it into the pipe to recover the round shape.
just before you put the tube together heat the end of the tube with a hair dyer, it warm push it on when it cools it contracts wa la your got a tight seal and e ze to put together
just another quick note remove the lower branch and leaves of your tomatoes water the hole and put the plant ALL the way to the branch so they just about touch the soil. Way you ask, the tuck of the tomatoes will be big and strong, I live on Vancouver Island British Columbia Canada The winds are horrific off the ocean and the tomatoes plant are fine but the peppers have to have shelter good luck I'm 72 so I've have planted a lot tomatoes and I'm still planting (*!*) 9 way to the set
Nice garden setup! 🌱 Y'all are much greener than we are. We have so many rabbits this year, they are eating everything, including the bark off of the mesquite trees. I'm glad our garden is fenced, but we still have to protect the small plants from the birds until they get to a decent size. 🌱🌞🏜️
