Desert Night Camouflage Effectiveness

In this video we look at the effectiveness of Desert night camouflage in a heavily wooded and vegetated area. The pattern was originally designed to disrupt Soviet made Generation one night vision devices but is now rendered obsolete. However, this old camo might still have some use in her. Hopefully by watching these videos you can get a grasp of the patterns potential and limitations in this type of environment. Thanks for watching!

The irony of this pattern is that the day time chocolate chip camo proved to be more effective when viewed through a AN/PVS night vision device. And due to advancements in foreign night vision devices it has been rendered obsolete.
@TheAwast2
@TheAwast2 2 года назад
The irony is also that at night even without nightvision the chocolate Chip proved to be better camo in desert as Desert Night Camo

It was developed in the 1970s to counter act a very specific Soviet IR. Desert night is terrible as a camouflage in any other aspect. Worse than most of those Russian and Ukrainian camos that become a solid color. As a solid color it works great. Just wear ww2 G.I. stuff, its the same. Lol

I've tested the night desert camo with older optics. In the 2003-2005 era, when photographed in daylight with high-end digital cameras, it was perfectly visible. When photographed with a cheap digital camo, the photos were always blurred, as if I had moved when the picture was taken. Under modern gen 1 night vision, you're somewhat camouflaged, but pretty much any modern camo pattern with NIR dye will beat it. Using older gen 1 night vision, it seemed to blur the image, making it difficult to make out just what exactly you were looking at. Gen 2 and better NVG's of any era will see it just fine. Night desert only worked for a very specific era and against very specific night vision equipment; American-issue NVG's could see it just fine, Soviet-issue gear had trouble making it out. We quit using it once we realized it didn't work as advertised and the Iraqis weren't using night vision in the first place, making it kind of pointless. It's still a really neat pattern and a cool piece of history, and as the video shows it actually isn't half bad as a woodland camo.
@BillHesse
@BillHesse 4 года назад
Guy Cramer from Hyperstealth / ADS Inc has a long series about the recent camouflage selection in the US Army and the huge amount of data of various camouflages and their performance in multiple settings. NVG performance is one such area he covers and basically shows almost none of them perform well at night when it comes to pattern separation under NODs. Current digital patterns do a little but in general, many colors selected are too bright for night vision and reflect or simply fade together. Color selection needs to fall within a certain wavelength of the color spectrum under night vision to appear / function similarly as it would at night. Sadly, looking cool doesn't help camouflage perform any better, which is a shame. I really like me some Kryptek. If night vision isn't going to be a common threat, then it doesn't matter.

What was interesting about the night vision camouflage was that underneath a Gen 2 or gen 3 it stuck out as opposed to blend it in so that is why it never saw used beyond Kuwait.

Always great demonstrations! Question, at this point of current devices, would you say the material is more important for disguising signatures than the pattern itself? When I was in, some guys had some really salty cammies and they stuck out big time under Nods, and we were using PVS 14's. If they were brand new, no problem, though.

I had a parka when I was around 12. I woukd hide in the weed patches and cuss at people. They couldnt see me if I didnt move. One issue with these was they would fade pretty badly. That ME sun would burn any of these exposed for half a day. Made the camo stand out under night vision. You can see this in a good bit of the ebay listings.

This camo is very effective in real life - not in a video ..dduuhh!! In 1986-87 our paintball team adopted night desert (very available then) as our official "travel team" camo. .,We travelled from Ala. to: Ga., Fla., Tn., Ms., Ark., IL., Ind., Oh., Ky. and NC., playing paintball tournaments for several years. ALL the other teams complimented us on the camo, saying it was the best at non-detection and once detected-then lost - very hard to redetect unless you moved. Action Pursuit Games magazine featured our team and our camo on the cover.. forgot which issue, still have it somewhere. It works anywhere there is green cover! A camera is NOT real life - this stuff works in real life, where it counts!! I will admit its not the best in totally dead, brown/grey wooded, but still is better than most. The paintball team was originally name: "The Death Squad", later renamed "The Squad" when paintball got more attention and political correctness became necessary for the good of the game. ps.. We were in the magazine a second time as the first entire team to join the IPPA. Fredo, A.K.A. "The Predator"

I used it quite a bit in the early and mid 90s too in paintball tournaments. I second your comments about it being effective, especially in the spring and summer. It worked far better than m81 woodland, which was normally too dark. I used to wear red sunglasses under my goggles. They made woodland stand out like a dark blob, but desert night camo and Tigerstripe Products pattern tigerstripe were hard to pick up on.

That’s what it was designed for, but I’m not sure how effective it would actually be. I think I read somewhere that in the Gulf war they determined that the Soviet type night vision capability that the Iraqi’s had was better than originally thought, and the standard 6 color desert pattern was actually better than the desert night pattern through NVGs. I’m not 100% on that, but if you look for it I’m sure you’ll end up reading the same thing I had looked.

Parka: www.armynavysales.com/products/night-desert-parka/ I'm 6'2" and a size small parka fits me just fine. If you're wearing another set of BDU's or gear underneath, go with a medium. Parka liner: www.armynavysales.com/products/night-desert-parka-liner/ Regular USGI parka liner also works, but the buttons don't quite match up and it'll be slightly crooked inside the parka. Pants: www.armynavysales.com/products/night-desert-pants/ Drawstring waist and cuffs; again, meant to be worn over BDU pants and gear, so they're going to be baggy; go one size smaller than usual if you want a more typical fit. Personally, I like them slightly baggy because it helps break up your outline more. Machine wash COLD ONLY and do not use bleach or detergent with color brighteners, they will fade to a grey color very quickly otherwise.

+Brent0331 You are correct, it is expensive and rare. Most of it was simply worn out, they are very comfortable as are all those old jungle fatigues, but with only single layer material everywhere they wore out quickly but were very light and comfortable while they lasted. The two main types, green predominate and brown predominate each were valid camo patterns. In a green area like you are in these videos the old green ERDLs would be ideal. The brown predominate was like woodland BDUs but with a better green background. Great videos, saves me buying a lot of camo for my own testing somewhat.

+Owlman Hooter Camouflage does not make you invisible. Camouflage helps conceal you from an enemy who may not know you are in the area. No camoflauge, even ghillie suits will conceal you from someone who knows you are somewhere in the area. This is why utilizing dead space is critical to movement.
