An important part of the Elizabeth line design principles was a shared design language between stations, with common materials and components. In the new mined stations below central London, you’ll notice large tunnelled spaces, much larger than what you will find across most of the rest of the transport network. These spaces are clad with glass fibre reinforced concrete, leaving smooth, sweeping curved edges that promote intuitive wayfinding and reduce blind spots for passengers.
In each of the new underground stations full-height platform edge screens with integrated doors on the platform and totems in concourse spaces provide lighting, signage, speakers, CCTV and more, de-cluttering these spaces and providing a quality environment for passengers. Other components, such as the iconic purple Elizabeth line roundel, seating, handrails, and more are common features across the entire line.
Join Neill McClements, Director at Grimshaw and Julian Maynard, Director at Maynard Design to learn more about how the line-wide design helps give Elizabeth line stations a familiar identity, and how totems and platform screens help to de-clutter stations, improving the passenger experience.
