There are so many decorative rolls of Duct tape out there. I use that as the "binding" for my design boards.

I love the idea of using glue stick lines to hold down the batting! I made my batting layer stick by spraying the board with spray adhesive first and layering on the batting. Just another option.

Thanks for sharing this method. I have several design boards to finish and didn't particularly care for the hot glue method as it was messy. Certainly going to try this! Much neater looking. I love using design boards - they have made such a difference in my cutting and organizing of fabric for piecing. A small thing, but so helpful!

I used the Ultra Hold too! Instead of turning the ends over, I used my Pinking Shears to trim the ends and applied a few drops of Fray Stop. So the mitered corners would hold better I used a drop of elmers glue all and ironed to dry the glue. The ultra hold method was so easy that I made 6 Mini 5 x 5, 4- 10 x 10, and 4- 15 x 15. They are holding up very well.

I am going try to use the Ultra Hold to hold on the batting on first. I am also going to join the ends like binding, on a 45 degree only just using the Ultra hold. I will turn over about 3/8 in. and tuck in the end and press in place. That Ultra Hold is great for wall hangings that are only used a few times & then are outdated. Great no sew project for anyone! Hi Robin, Just seen your design board video. What a good idea. I finished my Chrissy tree ornaments and a little basket to put my throw away bits in. Next I want to start some of your string bits. I'm new to all this and really enjoying doing them. I have a very dear friend in South Carolina that I call my sister as I haven't got one. We've known each other since 1996 when we took part in a teacher exchange. First time I'd flown on my own. We have 'crossed the pond' many times since then. The last time she came over was for our daughter's wedding in 2019. Our son did an exchange year in NC before he went to university and had a great year. Our daughter went to Florida on an exchange with the school county band and played in a concert at Disney World. My husband used to go to the US with his work. We had a wonderful time every time we came over and we visited lots of places east to west. Long may you continue your videos. Jenny

Much better way than with glue! One suggestion: leave an inch or more free at the beginning if you are starting with a selvage edge. When you join the two edges, cut the binding to slightly overlap, but finish with the selvage edge on top. Of course this will only truly work if at least one selvage has the print or weave all the way to at least one edge. This will eliminate any need to fold over an edge. You can also eliminate bulk by trimming at an angle the folded back sides at the starting edge before applying the ultrabond.

I just made one but used corrugated cardboard since I had a lot of packages arrive over the holidays. The process worked very well, but since the cardboard is thinner than the foam core, I didn’t iron along the edge first. I ironed a little on the back and then the same area on the front. Worked great! The cardboard wasn’t white, so the board has a darker look since the brown shows through a bit. I love this method because it is exactly how I bind my quilts. No new skill set to learn! Thank you!

I’ve heard from a few people that they successfully used amazon boxes or other cardboard boxes. Great way to recycle.

I actually made one of these today BEFORE I saw your video, I used the hot glue, I’m terrible at hot gluing! I wasn’t really happy with how it turned out so when I make another one I will DEFINITELY be using this method! Thank you!!

I have two small boards that I use regularly. One made with hot glue and one with the fusible. I can tell the difference every time I pull them out. The fusible one is so much neater and smoother.

Thank you, Robin, this is so helpful. I tried following Lori Holt's suggestions for using fabric and glue on my boards and just quit, it was so fiddly for me. This is much easier and prettier too!

You’re very welcome. I struggled with the glue too. I never could get It to lie flat or look nice.

Thank u so much for this method! I made one today and they are so perfect. They have adhesive backed foam core boards now so I didn't need the glue stick...just take the paper off the board and the batting sticks to the board...no fuss no mess. Really luv the heat and bond...first time I saw this method!

Omg i just made 9 boards last night and i see your video this morning I'm so mad ugh lol. The hot glue sucked I burned my fingers too and it ooozed out of my fabric so some boards aren't as neat lol. Now I will make more using the hb ultra hold. Thank you so much for your tutorial.

Oh no. I’m glad you found my video even if a day late. You might be able to peel off the hot glue version and save the boards.

I like that you used Elmers glue stick. I did do that when I made my design board. However I did sew my binding on. I’m sure your method is great also. Thank you for all the little tips!

This is FANTASTIC!! I was planning on making some boards, but I hate hot glue. This is great!! I'm going to use basting spray on underneath the batting. Thanks for this great tutorial!

Basting spray is a great idea. As I use my boards the loose batting has started to bug me.
