This is probably the most transparent piece of content I've ever posted online!
Quite a few of my followers have reached out to me over the last few years for advice on design fees. It is a tough one when you're desperate for work but don't want to loose the job by charging too much. I get it.. But money makes the world go round so if you've decided to do this thing then you have to charge for your services and know your worth!
In today's video I am taking you through my design fee proposal and sharing with you how it all went down in the real wold. And to spice it up i've even shared why I didn't get paid the whole fee in the end.
Woooshhh! Feeling very vulnerable right now so be gentle if you do end up commenting, ok? :D Hope you'll find this useful and it'll help you with your own design fee proposals!
Speak soon!!

UGH! People are SO untrustworthy - I am so sorry that happened to you. I have had a few of those but on the client end...taking ideas and not paying. So frustrating when it is our intellectual property!

Yep, happens more often in our industry than we'd like to admit. But we move 🙌😉 Fail fast, learn and move on to bigger and better things!

The story at the end is so crazy to me, sorry that happened. But, 10-15% is the normal percentage of design fees for a project - especially if it was project management AND design. You should have gotten the 5 for sure. Thanks for your video. I like how direct it is and laymen for people who you plan to work with have an easy grasp. Because design phases are intricate to explain sometimes. I personally have a hard time not getting into the weeds. 😂

I know it's not the best result but I learned loads from that experience and that's what this career really is- a constant learning curve ✌️ I'm charging a lot more these days as well so time kind of sorts out a lot of things 😁 Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment!

I love your content! Who orders the supplies for your projects? The home owners, you, contractors?
@SpaceForEdit
@SpaceForEdit 4 месяца назад
Hiya! I mostly work on commercial projects and do not place the orders myself. I will provide the client with a quite from to FF&E supplier and the client will make the purchase. I will still liaise with the supplier re specification and delivery details but the pure monetary responsibility stays with he client. I haven't got the insurances in place to take on that kind of responsibility 👍 Hope that helps 🙂🙌

What should be done when someone (client, GC, etc) goes silent? Thats one of my biggest fears
@SpaceForEdit
@SpaceForEdit Год назад
I'd suggest that you try to get hold of them every possible way, but sometimes you just have to let it go and accept the situation as is. It is a risky business. I've even been consulting on this topic with business advisors and asking about contracts and all the other legalities, and it seems like there is not much that ties the client or a contractor to the deal. Unless you have lots of money to spend on court cases, your chances of getting justice are quite slim. It all comes down to just trying to work with people who respect your business from day one and make sure they have a legitimate background and work history. Hope this helps!
@lauram3491
@lauram3491 Год назад
@@SpaceForEdit thank you for your feedback! It's been a challenge for me to find a contractor that is committed. Granted my projects right now are small and most don't think it's worth their time. It's so frustrating, if I could do the work myself, I would!!
@SpaceForEdit
@SpaceForEdit Год назад
You'll get there. Might just need to start with a handyman, someone who can do any little job and then move on to bigger companies. You can always say to the client that you do not offer to manage the install. Then it's up to them to find the trades 👍 Hope it all works out for you!

Goodness, I hope you have quadrupled what you were charging then! I am in the USA so it's probably a bit different, but I would never work for that low, even as a beginner.
@SpaceForEdit
@SpaceForEdit 2 года назад
It is a tough world out here for designers in the UK. At least if you're not working in the luxury design/ high-end field or get a commercial project with a healthy budget 🤷🏼 I have heard that USA designers are charging larger fees but again it all depends on the niche you're in and the type of client you're working with. One thing I've learned from my career in design is that for most people/businesses hiring an interior designer is a luxury so finding clients that are willing to pay is a lot harder.

How do you arrange the purchases with clients?
@SpaceForEdit
@SpaceForEdit Год назад
Oh, this is a whole different topic. There's a few different ways how to go about it. You could do the whole thing on your own, create a shopping list for your client and let them do it themselves or it could be a mix of both 🤷🏼. I'll add this topic on my content list and create a video in the new year 👍😊

Hello ma'am What can we charge for 2D and 3D design? In Sqft
@SpaceForEdit
@SpaceForEdit Год назад
Hiya! I dont think its possible to charge in that way. Each project is so different and requires a different level of input from the designer. I talk about hourly fees on some of my other design fee videos. See if that helps you in any way!
