Design Principles
Like mentioned above, these principles relate more to traditional design (painting, drawing, web design, sculpture, and in some cases, audio). These are the starting place for being design-conscious and are what our Game Design principles build from. The major difference between Design and Game Design principles is the anticipated level of interaction from the viewer. In traditional design, the viewer's role is assumed more passive (though not always the case for interactive media and web design), whereas in Game Design the player is expected to participate in progressing the work.
1. Balance: Balance in design refers to the distribution of visual elements to create a sense of equilibrium. There are two main types of balance: symmetrical and asymmetrical. Symmetrical balance involves arranging elements identically on both sides of a central axis, creating a formal and harmonious look. Asymmetrical balance, on the other hand, achieves equilibrium through the careful arrangement of different visual elements without being mirrored. Balance ensures that no single area of the design overpowers the others, providing a visually pleasing and cohesive composition.
2. Hierarchy: Hierarchy establishes a clear order of importance among elements within a design, guiding the viewer's eye through the content. By using varying sizes, colors, or positions, designers can emphasize crucial elements and create a visual flow. A well-defined hierarchy helps users understand the information's structure and prioritize what to focus on first.
3. Contrast: Contrast involves the juxtaposition of different visual elements to create visual interest and emphasize specific aspects of the design. This can be achieved through differences in color, size, shape, texture, or style. High contrast draws attention to key elements, while subtle contrast adds depth and dimension to the design.
4. Alignment: Alignment is the practice of arranging design elements along a common axis or edge. Proper alignment enhances the overall organization and readability of the design. Aligning text, images, and other elements to a grid or invisible lines ensures a clean and cohesive layout.
5. Repetition: Repetition involves using consistent visual elements throughout a design to create unity and reinforce the design's identity. Repeating colors, shapes, patterns, or typography strengthens the overall visual connection and brand recognition.
6. Proximity: Proximity is the principle of grouping related elements together to create visual relationships. By placing related elements close to each other, designers help viewers understand the connections and hierarchy between different components of the design.
7. Whitespace (Negative Space): Whitespace refers to the empty spaces between elements in a design. It provides breathing room, improves readability, and helps draw attention to the main focal points. Whitespace plays a crucial role in creating a balanced and uncluttered design.
8. Emphasis: Emphasis directs the viewer's attention to essential elements or focal points within the design. By using contrasting elements or strategic placement, designers guide viewers toward critical information or calls to action.
9. Simplicity: Simplicity aims to communicate the intended message effectively and concisely. By removing unnecessary elements and visual clutter, designers create designs that are easy to understand and memorable.
10. Consistency: Consistency ensures a cohesive and unified design experience across various elements, such as typography, color schemes, and layout. Consistency reinforces brand identity and fosters user familiarity and trust.
11. Proportion: Proportion involves maintaining appropriate size relationships between elements to create visual harmony. Understanding proportion is vital in achieving a balanced and aesthetically pleasing composition.
By understanding and applying these fundamental design principles, designers can create compelling, well-organized, and visually impactful designs that effectively communicate their intended message and engage their audience.
