Game Design generally happens before game development, and thus the principles and considerations are more conceptual and broad spanning. These principles also maintain a broad application and can be used for designing pen-and-paper games (like Dungeons & Dragons or Sudoku), physical games (card games, board games), or video games.
Player-Centric Design: Design with the player in mind. Consider their preferences, emotions, and motivations throughout the game development process. Engage players by offering meaningful choices and rewarding experiences. Tailor the gameplay to cater to different playstyles, ensuring that players find personal fulfillment and enjoyment. You should always keep the player in mind, and build for them. The player should have fun, not the designers, developers, or programmers!
Clear Objectives and Goals: Establish clear objectives and goals that guide players' actions. Providing a sense of purpose enhances player immersion and helps them stay focused on the gameplay. Clearly communicate the main objectives and any subgoals to avoid confusion and maintain player direction. This is critical at all stages of your game, you should always have something for the player to do or some sort of objective, and make sure you are always communicating it somewhere!
Balancing Challenge and Skill: Strive to strike the delicate balance between challenge and skill. Games that are too easy may lead to boredom, while overly difficult ones may frustrate players. Gradually increasing challenges can keep players engaged and motivated. Adapt the game's difficulty dynamically to match player progression, fostering a sense of accomplishment. Make your game easy to learn, but difficult to Master. Prividing additional "elite" challenges can provide additional replay value while using virtually no additional assets.
Constraints and Rules: By defining explicit and implicit rules, game designers create a structured environment that guides players towards specific objectives and interactions. These constraints foster creativity and critical thinking, as players are encouraged to explore innovative strategies to overcome challenges within the established rules. Additionally, well-designed constraints ensure a balanced difficulty curve and fair competition among players, enhancing the overall gaming experience. As an integral aspect of game design, this principle shapes the game's identity, genre, and emotional impact, while encouraging replayability and offering players meaningful decision-making opportunities throughout their journey. This also helps to define how the game is played.
Elegant Simplicity (Single Mechanic Design): Embrace the power of simplicity in game design. A straightforward and intuitive gameplay structure allows players to quickly grasp the rules and mechanics, leading to a more enjoyable experience. Avoid unnecessary complexity and clutter, as it may overwhelm players and hinder their immersion. When building more complicated systems, start simple and work broadly. It's often much easier to build your game around one single game mechanic instead of trying to build multiple systems in tandem. Determine your core concept and build off of that.
Feedback and Reward Systems: Implement effective feedback and reward systems to reinforce player actions and accomplishments. Meaningful feedback informs players of their progress and motivates them to continue playing. Thoughtfully design rewards to align with player achievements, providing a sense of accomplishment and fostering a desire to explore further. Reward the player often enough to keep the game engaging, but far enough to feel rewarding and achievable. Balancing your reward system can make or break a game! How are you motivating your player?
Immersion and Storytelling: Create immersive worlds and compelling narratives that draw players into the game's universe. Engaging storytelling enhances player connection to the game's characters and environment. Use storytelling elements like plot twists, well-developed characters, and captivating dialogues to create emotional resonance.
Iterative Design Process: Embrace the iterative design process to continually improve and refine your game. Regular playtesting, feedback, and revisions are essential for creating polished and enjoyable experiences. Be open to receiving feedback from players and fellow designers, iterating on the game to enhance its strengths and address weaknesses.
