Designer Reacts to Terrible Designs 9 

I finally downloaded twitch. I never really had a reason to have it before. I’m 40 years old and just really enjoy watching what my grown kids are into and keeping up on the world outside. So I downloaded it finally to watch my oldest daughter on her channel. And now joinen.

I’ve been a graphic designer for 15 years. I can say, a lot of time when I’ve made “bad designs” I’ve been strong armed into it. Usually it happens when a client want to “be involved” in the process. I’ve “collaborated” some truly bad designs. But hey the client loves the design they’ve put together, and I’m left wondering why I was even hired in the first place? 😅🤷‍♀️

Our theaters don’t have lights on the stairs. It’s just a rope light (very dim but bright enough to see) and it’s outlines in the steps.

Joinen explaining how he'd change the lights in the theater is kinda funny to me, cuz that's exactly what we have. (Light strips on the end of the stairs, just enough that you don't trip, but not too bright that it would bother you while watching a movie)

That bathroom looks like when you build a house in the sims and run out of space for the bathroom.

In all the movie theaters I've ever been in in the USA, the lights for the stairs are just like little FLAT Christmas lights? and they're usually this really dark orange so you don't even know they're there until you look down lol

I have a love-hate relationship with comic sans. As a Finnish person (moi) who often writes stories in English, most of my early stuff was actually using comic sans as the font. Over time I stopped using it and now after going through school learning graphic design, ALL of my teachers told us not to use comic sans lol. Of course I never do, but after being told that, I realized that a lot of stores have their name written in comic sans?? Like I saw a place for a massager use it as well as a sushi place. So my opinion is that in writing, comic sans is good. In design, nope. I actually recommend Nunito, it's a nice and easy to read font that I can't stop using lol

The Comic Sans has irregular letters, meaning that they don't share shapes with each other. Also, some letters hade serifs and some don't. This make it so readable, especially for people with dyslexia, for whom the font was invented. It was much more useful back when it was invented and letters were 32px(I think) high.

I was at a theater where the end seat of the back row was in front of the stairs and the railing stuck into your view of the screen unless you were like 6 foot 6 inches tall. And the lights going down the stairs weren’t angled down so the LEDs which were bright as heck were shining right in your face.

When you see your university in a Joinen bad design video 💀 But no joke, these are a nightmare to sit on... We have these in another building as well and not only are the tables and benches too far away from each other, there's also a thing in the back of the table that prevents you from stretching your legs out. My legs are too long for it and I'm 1,6m (5,5 I think idk) tall...

People cant be trusted to wash their feet before getting their toes done. But also getting from your shower to the salon, you might get sweaty and need to wash again

Mcdonalds needs to embrace the fact that they are the main choice people make with they cant be fucked, ever since they came out with 'im lovin it' ive always sung it as 'ba da ba babaaa, Fuck it' no ones sitting around going 'mcdonalds is gonna be a special treat' no the single mom with 3kids under 10 screaming in the back seat saw the sign on the way home from soccer practice and she cant be fucked to go home listening to them cry about not getting mcdonalds, make a home made dinner for 45 minuets, and then watch the kids not eat it, so she says 'fuck it' and pulls into mcdonalds XD and mcdonalds needs to lean into this

Youre right about the "features in" menu at McDonalds. It's literally the regular Big Mac, McNuggets and sweet and sour sauce with new packaging. 😂 they also didnt even eat it in the show yet! It's in season 2 of Loki which airs sometime next week. My local McDonalds has a list of all the movies and TV shows that Big Macs appeared in 😂

Omg the bathroom looks like the bathrooms everyone builds in the sims 4 if you dont have a lot of money or wanna safe space (minus the stairs) xD kinda funny to see that irl xD

Ram trucks made in the past 10 years or so have a knob for the gear shift that looks like a radio or volume knob. I had a Ram work truck for a while and a coworker borrowed it. He said he accidentally put it in neutral trying to change the radio station!

For the theater lights - what about something like a not-so-bright red? Doesnt effect the eyes like whites or blues, and as long as the covers guide the light down, i see no problem with it

1:30 I have a car with that gear shift and it works really well honestly. You don't have to put the car in park, you just turn the car off and it automatically shifts to park. Once you get used to the gear shift there, it's easy to shift between reverse and drive, plus the screen on my dashboard tells me what switch i pulled. I really like it

The + and - on the gear shifting thing are basically for a manual mode on an automatic car, which is actually pretty useful if, for example you want to reach a higher speed limit faster (but your car is just balking) or you are having troubles obeying a lower speed limit (e.g. 20 km/h) due to the slightest pressure on the accelerator pushing you WAY over. This is present in most modern cars, where you just push the joystick to the left and then push up or down to change gears more easily than on a pushbike, but older cars instead have extra gears (e.g. 4, 3, 2 and L) below the D and you'd have different gears depending on the model, too (e.g. the Holden Adventra has 4, 3 and L, while the 2006 Toyota Corolla has 2 and L).

When you get a pedicure they need to soak the feet to get the skin cells soft enough to be able to remove the skin layers if they need to. Like, if a person has a huge corn on their foot and they get a pedicure to get rid of it they have to soak the feet first

I mean when it comes to products being placed and stuff to promote them, I watched an anime and it had Dr. Pepper and then I was reading a book and it mentioned that one of the main characters really liked Dr. Pepper and it ended up with me trying it for the first time and it is my favourite drink to this day, many years later

Every time you need to switch from Low to High gear you'd have to lean over. If you were towing anything it would mean you'd have to do a weird semi crouched driving position, probably without a seatbelt.

Watching your vids after work is so relaxing

Ah those cup holders in the cinema makes me think of my local cinema. One cup holder for every 2 seats. really annoying

Okay, I'll admit the first bad design really gets me. I recently had to use a rental car that had an emergency brake set up like that, and I couldn't stand it. The only way I would know it was working was a little "Emergency brake on" "emergency brake off" popup on the main screen of the console, but there was it was so delayed that I switched the thing on and off a few times to figure out which direction did what. And I couldn't tell what it was set to if the car is off, since the console screen was also off. It's important to be able to tell how the important functions are set at a glance.

Usually I don’t mind cars having interesting shifters, but my moms car has it where the windshield wiper goes and the wiper is a button on the end. It is the worst and I still have no idea how to shift.

I live in the US and any theater I've been in with stairs has the strip of lights on them, not a full on light... Either that's an Australian thing (or just a non-US thing) or that's a chain I've never been into lol

Some movie theaters in the US do have light strips on the edge of each stair. It makes so much sense.

I'm in the silly little target demographic for Loki sauce lmao. Got all excited when I found out we had it in the UK, reinstalled Snapchat and bought the nugget meal - first time trying the sweet and sour sauce as well lol. This was immediately followed by disappoint when I saw our lid design was different (2/3's of the lid is the ingredients list presented in a clear black font 😅) and that it doesn't bring up the Loki filter/"exclusive content" when scanned on Snapchat (the reason I was excited to get it) like it does for the US lid design 😒. Felt scammed lol

Comic sans is actually the most readable font for those learning English, those who have bad eyesight and people with dyslexia comic sans gets a bad rap as it also doesn't even look that bad I saw someone use comic sans in a poster and it looked fricken awesome I actually think that was a wonderful design so those who are not good at English or have trouble reading so they can easily use and understand what it is for those deadly situations

the car thing: I would love those but I'm new to driving lessons. anyway I find it way more bothersome to put all sorts of buttons on the steering wheel where you can accidentally press them and now you're driving and distracted ("why is the steering wheel suddenly hot")
