19:17 Another thing they like to do is force students to be able to use the books for one term. If a student were to repeat a class or have a class that uses the same book, students are forced to rebuy the book. At the end of the term, the student must sell the book at an extreme loss of value whether or not it were binded, and repurchase the same book next semester. If students did not go along with that, they would be thrown out of the class for not being prepared. I can not explain how profoundly it pissed me off the times I had to repurchase the same book five times in a row, as the classes covered different sections of the book, at a price of 250 bucks only to sell them for 15 bucks.

I know right? How stupid was that court. Why even put the hoop up on the odd end? Make it half court by painting a line and throw a bench in the corner. He suggested moving the court 10 feet to the left but just moving the whole thing up (towards the viewer) would work or even removing that back left corner altogether. The wire bench in the subway in Philly was a single prototype designed to allow both sitting at the ends and leaning in the middle. It's robust and long-lasting and easy to keep clean and doubles as an art installation. It does also deter people from sleeping on it. It was too expensive to mass-produce.

8:12 - That's actually a form of what's called "hostile architecture" (look it up on Wikipedia) - entire forms of otherwise-unnecessary and -inconvenient design "features" made solely for the purpose of driving away homeless and impoverished people (without actually helping them). According to the Wikipedia article (which did cite sources that did support the claim), one subway admin department actually posted a Tweet admitting that they had removed normal benches from the subway to stop homeless people from sleeping on them - not just discriminating against people in poverty, but also hurting long-distance travelers and people with disabilities (who needed those benches) in the process.

An AMC theater in my town has "WOMEN" and "MEN" painted outside their restrooms. No problem, that's fine. But one of the theaters when you are exiting, it is a long corridor you need to walk from the theater seating area to main hallway. After the movie ends, staff opens the door so customers can leave the theater. You can see the bathroom as you are walking down this corridor, but you can only see the letters "MEN" (the "WO" is hidden from view due to the door frame). I had my hands full of popcorn and personal items, not paying attention to where I was going, and walked right into the women's room completely by accident. Try explaining that to a police officer.

If I was scammed by any of this stuff, I'd instantly demand a refund. If I pay for a sandwich, I expect to get what I pay for. Same with the TV. I would actually demand that they upgrade my room, or give me my money back, and go stay elsewhere. Screw them getting one over on me: I'd make sure I got my money's worth. That's why you should keep your receipts. Make a fuss until you are treated fairly. If they wont agree? Then you report them to the Fair Business Bureau or something similar. They will usually back down and give you what you actually paid for, rather than risk being hit with heavy fines.

I've been encountering this sort of candy packaging deception for several years. For instance, this year's chocolates come in the identical _looking_ boxes as previous offerings, even as to graphics. However, in a store crowded with holiday shoppers, you might not check out the labeling, so when you get home, remove and dispose the Cellophane or plastic film wrapper, and open the box, you find spacers among the chocolates---which are fewer in number than last year's. _Then_ you check the label and find you paid the same, or similar, price as last year for fewer ounces/chocolates. I personally would understand a rise in price, due to inflation, for the same weight/number as last year. We don't like it, but inflation, like death and taxes are constants. Stay safe, everyone.

The fridge was probably bigger then what was originally there, and the owners, not wanting to go with a smaller fridge, or box in their kitchen's open air design, decided to make this compromise. When I remodeled my condo kitchen, I had to make some weird tough choices too. It happens. Personally, I don't think it is as bad as it at first appears. You have to imagine some paintings on the wall, and maybe a chair or table next to it. It's basically just a XL column that has a fridge hidden in it.

Imagine going to a store to buy Duracell batteries, only to end up with DuraSell. This happened to me a couple decades ago, and I didn't even notice it until I got the batteries home and took a better look at the packaging. Other than the 'mispelled' name, the packaging looked genuine, same color scheme and everything. The batteries themaelves were real cheap and nasty, both in the way the contacts looked and that they leaked.

Some years ago I went to a weekend flea market and bought what I thought were "SHARPIES" at a very cheap price as they had the same regular design that I am used to seeing . I since learned to inspect more closely before I buy anything .

This is why "Trade Dress" laws are a thing. If your country has them you can report the deception and the store and/or manufacturer can face liability. Typically from a minimum of a full refund to damages suffered all the way up to punitive penalties, depending on the severity of the issue. The thing to remember is this is not an emergency issue, so do not contact the police about it. They will likely do nothing and simply close your complaint with no action. You will need to look up the regulatory agency in charge of consumer protection and/or business regulation and file a complaint with them. In the U.S. we have multiple levels of this, everything from non-profit orgs like the BBB through local, state and federal agencies that are more than willing to look into cases of fraudulent consumer items. They are even getting more savvy with online sales, and if your item spent *any* time in the U.S. prior to final shipping they are getting better at going after those business for damages. Of course you are still SOL if you ordered something internationally and it came direct to your door, so buyer beware.

Oh my god, you hit the nail on the money with American college text books. I'm over here expecting to be in debt with student loans for a long time due to the tuition and text books being outrageously expensive. And the stupid paper text books require you to get a binder on top of that, the pages are easy to tear because of jostling in a bag, etc. I believe I even had to buy one of these stupid things for $124, not including the textbooks for my other three classes. Cengage saved me a lot of money, thankfully.

Another example of a very commonly used and very misleading sales tactic occurs when advertisers show a photo of their product while using what's called a "hand model". Problem with this is if the model has very small hands, it can send a falsified impression as to whatever size the item actually is! I guess in some cases, size really does matter!

My wife and I live in Robertson in South Africa, about two hours drive away from Cape Town. Last year for our Anniversary we wanted to go to Cape Town, so my wife scoured the internet for a hotel to book us a room. She found what seemed to be a nice hotel with reasonably priced rooms. She opted to book an apartment suite with views over the city and ocean, at least that was what we thought we were booking... This specific hotel also has room "pods" (basically just a bed with a basin, shower and toilet) for cost conscious people who need somewhere to sleep for a night. The website is set up in a very deceptive way. When we arrived at the hotel and booked in, we were directed (not taken) to our room: they had put us in a pod (I have to add here that our infant daughter was with us also). I went down to the lobby to complain and set it right, but was told "the price underneath the photos is not for one of the apartment suites" despite the email confirmation stating that we had in fact booked a suite instead of a pod with no windows. We ended up paying three times more for a suite, only to find out that the elevator did not go up to the top floor, we had to climb the remaining two flights with an infant and heavy luggage. We entered our suite to be greeted with broken cabinets, damaged couches, loosely fitted power sockets and badly finished walls. After rather scathing emails and google reviews from me we were offered a free weekend in THE SAME ROOM. Needless to say we declined the offer...

Overall, it's a good video, but on the textbook picture, there is literally the explanation for why it is looseleaf 3-punched on the bottom 1/3 of the book on the right. Also, it is super common to take your books to staples or wherever and have the binding cut off and punched. I actually saved by buying non-hardcover-bound books this way. The REAL *scam* is the small changes they make between editions that are 'upgraded and updated' each year, rendering the previous version worthless b/c the pg numbers are off by 20 pages, examples, and assignable-type content is swapped or numbers or changed. That stuff is nonsense.

The super glue containers are actually genius ideas. The sides of those containers squeeze equally across the entire surface of the super glue pouch so you actually get more out of it not less. One of the major issues with things like toothpaste and super glue pouches is no one really squeezes from bottom up, rolling them up as they go and in the case of Super glue you lose a lot to the bottom that evaporates away.

In Minneapolis there's this "artist" who paints arrangements of red yellow and blue rectangles and so there is an apartment complex down town with ugly yellow blue and red plastic film over the windows to mimic the "paintings" so they consider the building to be historical and charge outrageous rent. There's also that gaudy cement spoon with a cherry on it that spouts water into the pond across from the community college. Ugggg poured concrete is so ugly in my opinion. And that stupid spoon with cherry you'll see posted all over their touristy pamphlets as if Minneapolis is little Paris or something. Its not. Regarding college textbooks, I can add that the scandal goes further than most people think. The companies that make college textbooks solicit professors to write chapters of textbooks, which is often agreed to because it feels prestigious and maybe even profitable and because they're encouraged to by school administration. The reality, however, is that the authors make next to nothing, often under $100 in royalties. Furthermore, when those professors get the idea of using their own material to teach a course, the book companies threaten to sue the very authors who essentially wrote their textbooks for free, not just for exact wording but even for similar wording of examples, etc., which works because who has the money to go to court against a corporation? And even when professors get around that, the companies often apply pressure on the schools to not allow free alternatives in course requirements by offering profit sharing with the schools conditioned upon management preventing teachers from using "unapproved" course textbooks. Textbooks have become an unofficial middle class tax, since education is often required for obtaining a middle class job, and there's an entire corrupt system supporting that tax. It might seem minor, but on average each college student will spend upwards of $2000 on books just at the undergraduate level.

The college books scheme (buy them for lots of money, sell them back for very little) does suck a bit, however, it didn't bother me as much as the Jostens deal with my High School. Shuffling into the assembly for graduation info, my friend told me I could use her sister's graduation gown from the SAME high school just two years earlier. Since the gowns, hats and tassels all get purchased separately, I said "sweet 👍". Then we sat down and included in all the important graduation info the principal spouted off to us was the COMMAND "You will NOT rent or borrow your graduation gown or buy one from anywhere else, you WILL BUY a new gown directly from Jostens." Being the auburn haired, german, aries 17 year old that doesn't like illogical BS, OR being ordered around and told what I will and will not do by anyone with absolutely zero legal right or reason to do so, I said, "the F***" I will!" I did not buy a gown and I did not go to my high school graduation. When I graduated college, my graduation gown was still purchased from Jostens but it cost 1/4 of the price they wanted for my high school one. Such a complete waste of money for an ugly, uncomfortable scrap of table cloth that everyone in the world buys from one company, wears once and may as well throw it away. About the college books I had bought over $700 worth (5 used and 1 new) for a semester only to try and sell them back and at the end and for the sellers to offer me less than $20 in return. I just gave them away to a friend who was going to tame may of the same classes the following semester and as only one book was no longer the right edition (still usable as the new edition changed none of the content but had basically just changed page numbers) saved him loads of money that he really did not have. The company in charge of selling and buying back the books also had a book rental option with the hidden catch that you had to return the books about two weeks before the end of the semester when you still needed them to study and do your class work or else pay the cost of re-renting them again for the following semester even if you were not going to use them the second semester. Eventually the university switched to another agency (sometime after I left) and aside from the rental scam they, according to some friends of mine whom were still going there, were basically just as bad if not worse in all other regards.

20:07 Hey, uh, fun fact, most college bookstores will buy back for pennies on the dollar the regular, bound, textbooks, but will flat out refuse to touch a loose-leaf/unbound copy.

When I was young and worked in food at a college, there was a grill top stove that you had to steam clean while hot, then dump the tray insert afterwards. It’s where all of the funk, chemical, and water went. When you pull out the tray insert it is about 1.5” deep, and about 3’ wide by 3’ long. You had to be a miracle worker not to dump the whole contents of oily mess into the floor. We could put a wide mop bucket or whatever under it and it was still difficult. Who designs a commercial catch tray to be less than two inches tall? 🤦🏽‍♀️

When I was a kid in the 80's, I took apart my Atari 2600. I was shocked to find several lead weights inside it, obviously placed there to give heft to the console to make it seem like it had more electronics in it.

17:31 The manufacturer of that box can also put drugs inside it’s box and in a truck full of box with drugs inside saying that they will deliver it on the place where they sell beauty products no one will get suspicious and if the guards checked the inside of the box they will only see a beauty product inside

One time when I was at a house party as a teen, I noticed that house kinda had a slight distinct odor of mold and piss. I went to use the bathroom and the smell intensified as I got closer to the bathroom door. I opened the door and was nose raped by the horrific stench. That floor had wall to wall brown shag carpeting, which had to have been there for at least 40-50 years. I just walked out of there and went home without thinking twice and left my shoes outside for the rest of the month.
