It's time to start thinking about the panel in my Super Duty. Designing the layout of the panel had always been one of my favorite parts of building my own airplane. Let me show you how I do it...
Oh, and a little more about my panel. Although the layout design will most likely change slightly, the equipment won't. Since this is an IFR panel, both EFIS screens have their own ADAHRS. Additionally, each screen has it's own back up battery in case of total electrical failure. On top of all that, I'll have triple redundancy with the small back up D-10. This will be a well equipped, excellent panel by Dynon!
PRODUCTS I'VE USED:
Antislip Tape: amzn.to/2TzU32s
Adel Clamps: amzn.to/3ztVsI0
Snap Bushing (you NEED these): amzn.to/3gryDfm
Dremel Flap Wheel: amzn.to/3ztmXle
Air Hose: amzn.to/3wrqezA
Air Hose Fittings: amzn.to/3iIf2dB
Paint Gun (works GREAT for smaller parts): amzn.to/3vqDgMa
Air Filter for Paint Gun: amzn.to/3iHhfX2
USB Data Port (for Dynon): amzn.to/3iLsiOL
My Microphone: amzn.to/35likMa
Paint Mix Cups: amzn.to/2RSM4gc
Fly Cutter (for fuel sender): amzn.to/3gvgXzO

If the point of having the backup display (the approx. 5 inch display with the attitude indicator printed on it) is for an emergency backup in case the larger ones fail, then I would want it positioned more/closer in front of me. If you find yourself in some sort of electrical out, night/IMC stressful situation (electrical fire\smoke in the cockpit), trying to fly off an ADI that is not somewhat in front of your face can be challenging. Turning your head to see it can contribute to spatial disorientation. You could put some of that stuff like radios and circuit breaker on a center stack that is below the instrument panel. Love the channel!

Hey Mark!! This is one of the really fun phases... great idea for trying different layouts. Plenty of time to move things around and come up with new ideas. I personally like the back up positioned between the two PFDs. I'm kinda anal when it comes to things being symmetrical! I also am looking forward to seeing the servo installation. Watched a video where the builder used drawer slides for access to the back of the panel vs a hinge on a Rans. Was really slick but also somewhat overly complicated , I think that everyone is trying to figure out another way to skin that cat! Thanks again for taking the time to film and edit your build for our benefit! Blue Skies brotherman!

Dynon also has CAD models for download in two formats, IGS and DXF. They also have a PDF file showing dimensions. Now for a CAD model of the Zenith dash panel.

CAD would def be more accurate. I have no idea how to use CAD and I'm more 'old school' when it comes to doing things. I like doing things by hand instead of machines, and using paper photos of the instruments makes it easier to see exactly how it will look on the panel. No way is better than the other-this is just how I do it.

I want to put a Dynon Skyview HDX panel in Cessna 182. I am just waiting for the STC to be approved. Covid held it up. I am going all the way with radios and engine monitors all integrated. Looks great. Nice panel layout. Maybe I see you at one of the fly ins in the area.

As soon as they get their STC the price is going to skyrocket. Then they'll stop being an option to homebuilders.
@scsirob

Maybe a quick remark, you have your Dynon screen cluster off-centers. That means the center console will not line up with the center of your screens and autopilot controls. Which means that your intercom will either line up with the autopilot controls, but be off-center in the center console, or it will be centered in the console, but not line up with the autopilot controls. I'd give it a bit more thought.

As Joe would say, "Come on, man!" You can't think that the 5 minutes I spent putting paper to the panel is my absolute final design and it's an "all go"! I already have revisions. In fact, check out my MeWe page for updated photos! mewe.com/i/markpensenstadler

Hey Mark, as I was watching this I was actually questioning why you are going with the two larger screens and then the smaller back up screen. I'm not a dynon expert (or any glass expert by any means), but is it something to do with the fact that you can have a battery back up for the smaller screen and not the larger ones? If that's the case, why are you going with two larger screens? I'm just curious about your avionics selection, and why you're going for so much? I do not hold an instrument rating, so I'm a bit green about the subject, but I can also assume that you're probably not planning on blasting off into the complete soup with your plane, as I'm sure you get enough of that at work.

I have a d10a. The older version of the small screen. Mine has a large stick out in the rear of the panel. Not sure if the new ones are the same. But if I mounted mine that close to the edge I don’t think the panel would hinge down without getting caught on the upper lip of the panel as it folds down.

Great ideas here. Do you ever try using a start-up, take-off, landing and/or engine shutdown checklist to lay out your instruments/switches for an easy, repeatable flow pattern?
@KitplaneEnthusiast
@KitplaneEnthusiast 3 года назад
I organize switches in a logical way. For example, the first light I turn on is the beacon, so it is the first switch. The second light to turn on is the nav lights, so that switch is next. Then I have the recog lights and strobe light switches next since those are turned on next. So everything in the panel is organized in a way that makes it easy to use.

Mark, speaking from experience with my CruZer panel that hinges at the bottom. You have to take into account the depth of certain instruments mounted in the "panel". I have an ECM from Design Concepts that is about 8 inches deep at the top center of my panel and it inhibits lowering the panel due to it's depth. I believe the Garmin GPS is as deep or deeper than that.
@KitplaneEnthusiast
@KitplaneEnthusiast 3 года назад
Yes I have already thought about that with the Garmin on the top. if I remember it is about 5" deep. I will see if the panel can fold without the back of the Garmin hitting the glare shield. If not, then I'll make where the 175 mounts solid and not part of the folding panel.
@scottmiller4711
@scottmiller4711 3 года назад
@@KitplaneEnthusiast Remember the wires are part of the depth as well. I wish I would have made removable sections rather than the hinge...
@LTVoyager
@LTVoyager 3 года назад
@@scottmiller4711 With the big EFIS units, it is pretty easy to access behind the panel if one of them is pulled out. I plan to connectorize mine so they are fairly easy to pull out and I think that will work better than trying to hinge the panel.

I love the ideas you’re doing. I just put a whole Dynon setup in my Cessna 182 (EMS and everything minus the autopilot because it’s not STC’d yet). I used SolidWorks to design the panel because a) the Student edition is free if you’re an EAA member and b) Dynon gives the 3D files out for free, so you can get exact measurements to cut (as well as make sure the mounts fit ok in the back). I did have a question, though. Is your throttle going to be mounted on the portion that folds down? I would think that’d be difficult considering the way throttles are usually mounted, but I’d imagine you have a solution there. Thanks for the great video!
@KitplaneEnthusiast
@KitplaneEnthusiast 3 года назад
John, I don't think I've ever made a video where I uploaded it, watched it, and then didn't say to myself, "Dang it, I forgot to mention this...and that...and this..." LOL. My panel will be in three sections. So the very left corner where the throttle is will not fold down for the exact reason you state-it can't fold with the throttle mounted there. Also, on the very right hand side where the D-10 is mounted that won't fold either. That will be solid because of things like the push/pull knobs for the cabin heat. Once I get my actual instruments from Dynon and Garmin, I'll be making many more videos featuring the panel and will discuss all of this. Thanks for watching!!

@@KitplaneEnthusiast ahh alright, makes total sense. I was thinking about that’s as an unsolicited suggestion anyway ;) Seriously great job, and I do love the Dynon Skyview system. And it’s definitely worth a hefty chunk of my plane (and I haven’t even put the GPS175 in yet), but I have no regrets!

I found a PDF file with about 12 different dash layouts and I converted that to Autocad DXF format and tried scaling it up based on their Skyview cutout dimensions. But somethings not right, not enough room for two Skyview screens and all the other equipment you're showing.

Mark- I have noticed that most builders go with just one Nav/Com radio. I am so accustomed to two. Do you feel that one and then maybe a hand held as backup is sufficient?
@KitplaneEnthusiast
@KitplaneEnthusiast 3 года назад
I thought about installing two radios, but there were a few reasons I didn't. First, I already installed just the one comm antenna. Secondly, I didn't have room in the panel for two radios, and finally, I'm not sure if two can be installed as far as switching between the two. For example, how do you choose which radio to transmit on? Maybe Dynon has a solution for that, but I didn't pursue it because of the first two reasons.
