How to design and build a coffee table. In this video I made a custom coffee table for a client. She wanted the coffee table to be made out of walnut wood with a glass top. She wanted it to be modern and minimalist as well. The video focuses on woodworking techniques such as design, cutting miters, dados, and a few other techniques. I hope you enjoy!

I have done some woodworks in the past but this woodwork plan ru-vid.comUgkxZF0EMnrujZvqHhGkxiz559uIABJWR9TG helps me do much in a far lesser time than i used to do i have already built several projects with this plan and i intend to do many more soon. Thank you so much!

There's nothing like a crisp modern design in walnut. I would've added silicone pads to hold the glass top in place. I used to own a coffee table with very similar construction (wood base, glass top), and it had silicone pads glued to the base, which were insanely grippy under the weight of the glass. If you bumped into the table, the whole thing would move before the top thought about sliding. This motivates me to get back into the workshop. Here I am talking about what I would do, when I should probably just be actually doing it.
@Foureyes.Furniture
@Foureyes.Furniture 8 лет назад
+Dustin Hern Thanks Dustin! It will sit on some pads. It just didn't in the video. And to be honest, even without them, the entire table will tip/slide before the glass slides off. Now get out there and build! :)

You answered my question in the last segment - whether the three points make the table unstable. But it sounds like it doesn't for normal use. Love it.
@Foureyes.Furniture
@Foureyes.Furniture 8 лет назад
+IV Woodworking Thee contact points don't necessarily make it more stable (as in it isn't more sturdy or strong.) The advantage that it does have is that it is easier to balance. With 4 legs, if not balanced, two of the legs will always be on the ground, while the table could wobble back and forth between the other two legs. With 3 legs, all 3 will always be on the ground, no matter how much human error there was in making them.

It's gorgeous, so light, "airy". Stability wise, you could have added cross supports on the top and bottom rails without damaging the overall design. But I like it a lot this way : lighter, more refined, it almost feels like it's balancing as if by magic ! Thanks again for taking us through the whole creating process.
@Foureyes.Furniture

+Thomas Thanks Thomas! Surprisingly, it isn't that the glass can tip off with too much weight. It is that the entire table (base and all) could tip over with too much weight. That said, it is plenty strong for throwing your feet up on...and really, as long as nobody sits on the worst edge/corner, it'll be fine. And if somebody did that, they've got bigger problems that hitting their butt on the ground.

@Foureyes.Furniture 8 лет назад
Thanks Revilo! I've heard about that. I think they have a shorter arbor, so you can't use a dado stack. What other sort of limitations?
@thebaracuda
@thebaracuda 8 лет назад
for home use there are no limitations (I think by law at least, we don't have one at college). but for business use there must be a riving knife on one, I'll be going by what college has taught me and by how the dimension and rip saws are set up. so these saws we have at college by law must have a crown guard that cover 3 teeth and their gullets and also must have a riving knife at a maximum distance of 8 millimetres away from the saw blade. so obviously the crown guard bit is what limits me the most in this, as it's impossible to cut the Dados as the teeth of the blade needs to be covered with a guard. I'd think I'll just have to put more of a hand-made aspect into my work which I'm not fussed about. But in all fairness the laws in place make working on these huge machines a lot safer as its damn near impossible to get your fingers near any blades.

I love a-symmetrical tables. I used to draw them all the time as a kid. Most of mine wouldn’t have held themselves up though. Lol

+Craig Hart Thanks Craig! That is awesome. I always say that anything worth doing is worth doing well. Sometimes that extra 10 minutes in setting up a cut just right makes all the difference in the finished product.

I've never watched a woodworking video that almost brought me to tears; I can't claim that anymore. This was a beautiful video. Everything from the table to the narration was perfectly done. Bravo.

Hey Nicholas...thanks! Now I'm picturing somebody walking in on your watching the video and just balling your eyes out. They'd probably pass for a second, back out of the room, close the door and think "Damn...that guy really loves coffee tables."

I liked it a bunch. Although I envisioned it with the small shelf a little longer at and in the middle. Also a cross member as feet for stabilization. Awesome besides that.
@Foureyes.Furniture
@Foureyes.Furniture 7 лет назад
Thanks Albert. You could make the shelf longer I suppose...within reason. For feet, there are three pads. 1 at the thick end, and two at the cross pieces (trapezoid) for stability.
