What a thoughtful breakdown of one of my favorite games. I think your point about the lack urgency in gameplay is what makes me enjoy the game so much. I want my gameplay to be relaxed while still being able to slowly accomplish all the game has to offer. To understand this mechanic through an overall creative philosophy gives me a lot more insight into the structure of the game and actually makes me a lot more excited to eventually check out his new game.
I love this analysis, the editing really compliments the commentary & while I’ve been watching dozens of video essayists recently, you gave me a new perspective to this incredible game. I never really got the appeal of stardew (though that might be due to being forced to play by my girlfriend so I didn’t get an organic experience) but this video gave me a new perspective! I might go back and try it again by myself to get a more free experience lmao.
I can get that, for sure. For me it wasn't till my 2nd save file, where I had in mind an explicit goal to hustle towards that it really clicked for me. The first time I played everything felt so unclear, that the dopamine kick I was looking for wasn't happening. If ya do try it out again, GL & HF !!!
