I did choose one area and did it! But I have so many more little areas to work on and am so blessed by the gardening vlogs out there, like yours, that keep me motivated. You are Zone 9 and I'm in So. California, Zone 10. Would be great if there could be a You Tube gardener show from Zone 10 so it would be more applicable. Appreciate that you and Laura educate us so well and even bring us into your home as well as your garden. I am so enjoying the process you are going through of packing up and moving; unpacking and setting up house; your new office in order; your seeds planted; and now you have your climbing jasmine for the front of the house's trellis. Although, they do look wonderful where you temporarily placed them - in front of the zig zag planter - so much so that I agree with Michael - buy some more and plant them in the zig zag for privacy! Would look so beautiful there. BTW, I agree with Michael, keep the zig zag planter. It's quirky but with the new paint job and new plants it's now working! You have a knack for making it all work. Look forward every morning to watching two of You Tube's gardening shows and your's is one of those two.
Being in 9B (Rancho cordova) also, I have such soil issues too. Love Michael's theme of finish ONE area. 32x88 yard in sections, just get ONE done! Glad to know he's near me if needed!
You must do one area at a time! I had to do this when I moved to the country and had acreage! Otherwise it’s like your spending all this money and there is just no wow!
OK, Michael and Co. need their own YT channel...I could watch this creative process all day long. Thank you Janey (and Jason) - this is going to to be fun to watch you transform your outdoor space
Love Michael Glassman! I’m a landscape designer in Dallas,TX and learn so much from him and of course, you! I look forward to your show every morning. Just one thing to consider before putting in the raised bridge to your office (from your back door), your ability to pull carts and such from your driveway to your raised beds will be cut off. Accessibility will be challenging. I’m excited to follow along with your newly developing property and gardens. So exciting!
Wow Janey! It seems a lot of plans are designed around the old up and down wooden front deck. Why not just take the wooden front deck completely out and have a more flat natural flagstone front patio? Just a suggestion...💖💖💖
I think the bridge to the office is a cool concept but I think you would be over it within a few months. Whenever you need to go through with stuff from the metal shop you will have to go around the office to get through. With everything you plan on doing with the property it will end up being a journey from point A to B.
Another awesome consultation from Michael! Things are coming along :-) I worry about doing the bridge in the backyard, though. Won’t that hinder your ability to move wheelbarrows and Equipmemt back and forth from the metal barn area to your raised bed area?
I love what you are doing and have a question. I'm a practical gardener (sort of, lol). My question is, if you put in a bridge to your office, and say you get another soil drop or wood chips, or a big tree, which may happen over the years, how do you get it to where you want it to go in the back there easily? I use my Gorilla cart almost every day hauling compost or dirt - how will you get it there easily if there is a bridge in the way - or will this not be a raised bridge? One thing I've learned as I've gotten older, I need access to areas - so I can work in them. I have to say, I love, love, LOVE, the fence around the metal beds area. That is gorgeous!
I used a fake boulder to cover my septic tank lids, spruced them up with moss, some paint to give some lichen accents and used similar looking rocks around it give it a grouping . Then you could plant a few evergreens in big rolling planters to give height . I’ve seen people attach casters to bottom of trough planters
I am not sold on the gazebo, at least not that close to your house. If you are going to have paths, have one of the paths lead to the gazebo, a destination point if you will, at other end of property. You can sit on your front flagstone patio, look out over garden, take a stroll and end up at gazebo where you can view your beautiful garden from another angle.
How exciting!! Every gardener needs a Michael Glassman. I totally agree with him about completing one area at a time. In the end you will save money and time. In the past, much like you, just putting lipstick on a pig because I’m so impatient. Glad to be on this journey with you💚💐
I love how energetic and inspiring Michael is about the design elements he shares! It's so awesome to watch and listen to his amazing process of working through the different areas! If I wasn't in Minnesota, I would hire him to help me! He is a winner! Love watching this project come to fruition for you, Janie and Jason! Also, great to see Matthew gathering everything Michael talked about! He has to be a sponge and keep up with that Energizer bunny! 😂
I feel like the easier solution in the front would be to get rid of the deck and just have a step down from the kitchen. Then you also get some additional privacy/separation from the driveway as the seating area would be lower compared to the zig zag planter. Plus then you wouldn’t lose the door to the ADU.
Totally thinking the same thing. You would have more head space as you walk out of the front door. If you want a chandelier or fan, you will need more room.
Love Michael his ideas are amazing and I thought I was the only one that loved the zig zag planter especially now it’s painted but it’s one of a kind which makes it so cool 😊❤️🌻🌺🌸
One thought that came to mind: if you do your “bridge” walkway to the office, you may potentially be cutting off a main thoroughfare from the drive and barn to the yard..for your wagon and maybe yard tractor? Just a thought. Love all these new ideas and plans though! 🎉🌿
Best advice: Start in one place and finish it!!! You are blessed to have Michael and Matthew suggest and work with you! I can’t wait until your next video!
Janey, you were my 1st choice of video to watch this a.m. w/ my morning coffee! It is just so exciting to see all the dreams and potential! PS- Love your dress!
Would have NEVER guessed he would recommend keeping the zig zag planter……but now that you have it planted it really is pretty. Fun to watch this plan being developed. Thank you for taking us along Janey!
Wonderful team you have there. Love Michaels graciousness and common sense. Matthew's behind the scenes work is invaluable! I like that Michael is open to clients ideas, also
I love how enthused Janie is about the design plans and Michael Glassman is a one heck of a cool visionary landscape designer! I'm excited to view Matthew's 3D view of the property. We all know it's going to be gorgeous!
Questions: where do you park your cars? Which door do you go out of to get to your cars? Which door do you bring your groceries in? Do you most often walk in front of your office to access your raised bed area? While the bridge to your office sounds cool, would it be practical?
If there is concrete under the deck, why not just take out the deck? It would look so good. I agree about not blocking the front of the house. It’s so pretty.
I am so amazed at the ideas that have evolved in just this short time with the process! I am so excited for you and Jason! I love the ideas that you’re working on! Thanks for taking us along on this journey!
Hi, Janey: I had that idea in a previous video -- the obelisk over the concrete piece in the front!! Say, does Michael need any help at his design firm? (🤣🤣). That would be my dream job!! One idea that I would give some thought to Janey, is the bridge to your office. I really think it could be problematic with cutting off that area from the traffic in your yard, especially wheelbarrows. You will be constantly leaping over that bridge. Although it's a cute idea, would something else work just as well? I think the arbor over the area, with plantings on the arbor, would look wonderful if it keeps the area clear for ease of traffic. Just my two cents. There are lots of decisions to be made. From my experience, always think long term when making your landscape decisions, especially with the big items. Whatever you decide, I'm sure it will be amazing! Looking forward to the journey! ❣❣
Not done watching, had to take a pause.....but rhoughts so far....thank you for keeping the zig zag. From day one I thought it was fun, quirky and unique to your home, embrace it !❤ two, I think if you put star jasmine or whatever and male a living fence in the zig zag it will look like your hiding your home and also you won't get a full view of the beautiful landscape out front.....now I will go back to the video.
That's what I was thinking about the living fence in the zigzag. It will look like your hiding your home and you wouldn't be able to get a full view of the beautiful landscape out front through a little hole basically. You already have a fence up in front for privacy and are talking about replacing it eventually which I totally agree with. Don't you want to see your beautiful landscape and house together when you pull up onto your driveway. This is just my thoughts and whatever you decide will be fine because it is your house and property.
Have Michael Glassman look at Garden Answer's walking paths and how they did the water features for front yard .. Interesting idea 💡 of shipping container pool ..
Watching Michael's ideas morph & come to life before our eyes is incredible!!! A shipping container pool (!): phenomenal idea!!!! I love the idea of embracing the industrial aspects of the property and romancing various areas to complement the entire property/project! This process is incredible and I'm so excited to follow along!! The resources used to get an encompassing, yet fluid, design plan is totally WORTH ITS WEIGHT IN GOLD!!!!!!!
This was a joy to watch! A delight!!!! I’m so excited to see your garden come to life!! Please film everything so we can experience this transformation alongside you. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 I’m so inspired….I need more land….
This plan will have so many great ideas! I do wonder about the practical logistics of the raised bridge to the office door. Wouldn't that cut off flow from the driveway, shop building, etc.? I can imagine many times that you and your family, along with occasional guests and tradespeople, might need access through that area between the back of the house and the office to haul things into the back garden or the house or to go back and forth from the house to the shop or from the office to the garden, etc. Maybe a ground-level covered walkway would be more practical while still allowing for a covering of lovely vines. That way, you wouldn't need to step down into the office. However, maybe I am misunderstanding what he means. I look forward to seeing the plans in a few weeks.
Great shots of Andrew[?] painting and right b4 that of your little visiting friend Mr hummingbird darting in then out at the feeder in a flash lol....the magic of the camera.
Oh my gosh Janey !!!!! How nice to have Michael and Matthew make a master plan, my mind is bursting with all their ideas so I can only imagine hoe you and Jason are feeling. Love the suggestion of that shipping container swimming pool ! This is so darn exciting ! I so agree with him saying to complete one area at a time absolutely ! Have a great day !
🙌🏼 Michael Glassman 🙌🏼. How fantastic will that QR Code be. Holy cow who knew that was even possible. I am so excited for you and to see it start to unfold. And totally agree doing things without a plan just doesn’t work and looks pieced together. Eck! Can’t wait!
I loved the zigzag planter from the beginning and was disappointed hearing that it was going to go😅 And I'm so glad everyone came around to loving it too!! It's very unique 🌱 "Romantic Industrial" 👌
Bunnies will burrow under any fence! Make a raised bed and put the fence in it for your produce. Plant things bunnies don’t enjoy in the rest of the area.
Janie, you two are so smart to invest in a master landscape plan. It truly will be worth it’s weight in gold. I think that’s where Laura of Garden Answer goes wrong is to proceed without good initial design. The reason I watch videos such as yours is to continue my education both in horticulture and in landscape design, so am super interested in content such as this. One thought for you: your property lends itself so well to a country industrial look, but I wonder about a lack of cohesion if the “country romance” style is mixed in. There is nothing vintage or Victorian about your house, the zigzag planter, or your outbuildings. If it were my property, I would lean more into the industrial style with a touch of farmhouse/ranch/rustic when choosing fencing, gazebo, outdoor furniture, etc. Wishing you ll the best 😊
I agree lean into industrial/rustic. The gazebo and some other small elements will be country romance. But the bigger elements will not. The shipping container pool is cool. Never heard of that! But that is industrial not country romance.
I could just watch Jannie's reactions to Michaels ideas all day. She's so adorable when she's excited. Rightfully so, he has some great ideas. I'm so envious of this process.
Lots of exciting ideas, however I would like to suggest that instead of a pipe underground directing any runoff to the street, that you find a way to keep that water on site (rain garden?). Water is such an elusive commodity in CA, and we all need to hold on to as much of it as we can. Question about the deck to your office: if you do a "bridge", rather than a path, won't that make it impossible to, say, move a wheelbarrow through there? The shipping container pool sounds great, and I am sure the girls will be thrilled to have it sooner than later.
Love this!! The ability to be able to see this in 3d is SO cool, that’s always been my issue that I can’t visualize my space on paper. Wow, such a fun process to watch. Michales energy is contagious!! Thanks for bringing us along on this journey, love your Chanel!
Love all the plans especially a shipping container as a pool but how will y’all get a shipping container back there with all the structures and garden planters in the way? Have to be honest, the idea of a bridge sounds nice but think it will hinder access…maybe a bridge somewhere else on the property. 🤔 💚💚💚
Thank you for sharing this process with us! I love how the designer works with you and your budget to develop a long term plan. Invaluable!! So very glad that Michael Glassman is getting more well-deserved business, too! Well done.
Wow!!!! Such great advice and inspiration. I love the way Michael repeats that this project is organic. Nothing set in stone and he is totally respectful with the homeowners final decision.
I know Janey said she couldn’t take out the asphalt now because of finances and big trucks but I would at least get rid of the majority of it on the orchard side! I would make that my first project. It is an eye-sore. I agree with everyone else about the bridge to your office door. That won’t work for you. I also would prioritize what ever kind of pool you end up with. Trust me when I tell you the time your kids are kids goes by soooooo fast! You don’t want to miss that time spent in the pool with friends and family! Blink and they will be off to college! My sincere hope is that your channel explodes with views and the finances will all change❤ also I hope you pick up more sponsors!
If it was me, now that the painting is almost done, I’d put asphalt removal as priority #1. It is pricey but definitely cheaper removing it than installing it. It is going to make a mess removing it and better the mess now. There is so much of it.
I love the pool idea and since it could happen sooner than planned, you could put the greenhouse behind your office now and not have to move it for the pool. I like the bridge in the island, the bridge to your office seems to interfere with the flow from the shop, driveway, big pool trucks. Maybe later a covered walkway with climbers/ wisteria? I love what you’re doing and can’t wait to follow.
Michael is a design genius! So many wonderful ideas. To highlight some that I like ( I really like them all ) taking out the door and adding a window, the laser cut screen will be gorgeous, Courtyard , a bridge to your office with a rail and arch . Also the Shipping Container Pool is a fantastic idea and I even told my 25 year old son who is a new homeowner about this pool concept. Like I mentioned above I like the entire design plan !
That guy is amazing, he knows what he wants to do right away, has some really good pointers and design ideas... that's crazy how ppl want to hire him from other states, he's in high demand, I love to garden and grow plants but I'm not a designer, but I learn as I go... so happy for you Janey you're so a sweet gal.
Laura at garden answer is creating such a beautiful area around her pond with a pathway amd everything such great inspiration I can't wait to see Janeys I love watching these things come together
Love Michael's energy and passion. As I now have "older" parents, the importance of having easily accessible non precarious/wheelchair areas. Much love Mr Glassman.💖 Just a little reminder to us all: Vitamin D and C= strong bones💪
🌼🌼 JANIE 🌼🌼 my husband has a question. He is wondering if you looked UNDER the front deck to see if there is concrete all the way to the zig zag planter? He is thinking there is, but questions how far. Possibly you could just take the deck out completely - to help with the ups and downs, until you are ready for your final plan to be put in p,ace, or you just end up liking it. There might even be a stair that goes to the slider under there, unless when that door was put in was when they added the deck. All speculation, however by the looks of the venting, he thinks there very well could be a full concrete pad under there. It might help to know he was a Contractor here in California. 🌼🌼
Wow! Wow! Wow! Michael is so high energy, I just love how he designs on the fly. I love all the ideas and I can't wait to see what's next! Thank you Janey for taking us along on your journey.
Dear Janey, I love your channel, your gorgeous videos that you share to us,,,,girl but this morning really catch my eyes was your precious dress! And Yes, girl you looks so beautiful with that dress!!!! “ may you can share with us where did you purchase it “😉 Thank you Janey, have a Blessed Day!🥰
Ok. Another thought....your gazebo should have a modern look, or somewhat modern. Your home has a retro, modern, streamline look...so the gazebo needs to look similar. Not a Victorian look.
I enjoy Michael's visits so much! He is full of interesting ideas and positivity. I was wondering though, if you are traveling from the driveway or workshop to the raised bed area, will the office bridge block your path?
I always heard not to plant high shrubs infront of windows because it gives people a place to hide. Just sometimes to think about. I, too, love the painted zig zag planter and the idea of a courtyard. It's going to be so much fun executing Michael's plan, seeing it come together. Especially your talent for plant combinations, its going to be beautiful.
As the video started and went on, I was waiting for the exciting voice of Michael. you can feel his brain working and I get all his excitement in me,.. for you. He is amazing and I LOVE, LOVE listening to him. this was a great video, thanks so much.
I love Michael Glassman. He isn't all about the most expensive creations. LOVE THIS! And its a process, not a snap of the fingers and done for most people. Thank you for sharing this process with all of us.
Janey, you have accomplished so much in the short time you have been in your new home! It's so fun to watch it transform into a beautiful estate. I Love the idea of the courtyard! Love all the ideas! The only thing I'm pondering is the victorian looking gazebo. I would suggest emphasizing your California Ranch house lifestyle and consider a square gazebo with gabled roofing on all four sides which creates a zigzag effect and mimics your front raised zigzag bed. You can see an idea of the shape at BB&B. Just search pergolas. they have one with a black roof. This roof shape would also complement the gabled roof features on the left side of your house. I think it would make all your property features look more intentional. Also loved Michael's suggestion of a large obelisk at the septic cover. But I would paint it black with the white backdrop of your house. I still like the idea of a formal knot garden in the front circle. I can't wait to watch all of your plans come together!
We have a Splash Super Pool. Super High Quality. It is 20 years old. NO complaints. Husband said the only change he would make is putting a concrete slab underneath because gophers like to dig under it - where it is cool. There are less expensive pools out there - you could get an above ground pool for your girls and then sell it later, or give it away, when you are ready for your forever pool.
I have a Podocarpus screen! Deodora Cedars are one of my favorite trees too! I would love to see a Silver Dollar Eucalyptus somewhere because you have the space and I think you would enjoy the leaves for floral arrangements. 🙂 Weeping cherries are so gorgeous! We have several in our neighborhood and they are incredibly in full bloom!
The inspirations are all so cool, can’t wait to see a shipping container pool!! I was going to say a fence around the garden beds will help keep out rodents, I would put in solar moles rodent stakes in each corner inside the garden, they are Amazon , wish I could send you a picture, we love them they will keep snakes out too.
I built a large "square" seating platform out of wood and on one top side I built a square on top (1/3 the size of the width of the entire platform) and in the middle and put three plants on the one end and we sit on the other end. I built it to cover my septic. When the septic guy comes, we lift the stand for access.
Love Michael's energy! It was a treat seeing the drone view, Matthew did a great job! It's exciting to see the potential of your property and your vision for it. I am so happy for you! Regarding leach fields; you have to be very careful with fertilizers, tilling, and irrigation affecting the leach field and its components. Low maintenance plantings are recommended. Any changes to the water flow around the field will affect the proper functioning of the leach field, it is so easy to damage and very expensive to fix. Also, keeping in mind for future access to replace components as they only last about 20 years if it has been properly maintained. If you haven't done it already, It would be good to find out how old your system is before making any major changes to the area. I am sure you are in good hands though with Michael and his expertise with these types of issues. I am looking forward to seeing it all unfold!
Thanks for bringing us along on this wonderful journey you and your family are on for your property. So fun and we your fans can live through your dreams for each coming step. You, your husband and Michael Glassman and his team have so many wonderful ideas to work with. It is really going to fun to follow along with this journey. Love watching your videos!!
This video made me sad and happy at the same time. I am sad Michael can't help me do a design in Florida 😢 but I am so happy that you finally see the beauty and uniqueness of the zigzag planter.❤
Not sure where you are in Florida but have you seen the you tube channel Construction Landscape? They are a landscape company in the cape area and their designs are amazing. Watch the episode of her backyard area… it’s beautiful.
Awesome! Can't wait for the plsn!. That's where experience and talent shines! Love it Love Michael 's energy, please bottle some and send it to me 💞! Blessings 💞🤗💞
This is so much fun and Michael is amazing. I LOVE seeing this transformation and I cannot wait to see what is to come. Thank you for taking us along!!!! Now you can add the irrigation you wanted for the pots at your front door under the deck addition! Enjoy the process. 🩷🌸
Thank you for stating that you and Michael have talked extensively about the plan. I think as viewers we just see Michael state “I want to do this or that” and it can seem like he is not considering what you want. But you do seem happy with all his ideas. I think it has more to do with how he phrases his suggestions and ideas. Thank you for taking us along. What a fun process to watch.
