in the future use a chisel or a jigsaw to cut away the wood bridges that are left from cutting to make it a little easier and less chance of tear out when you pop out the pieces.
@ZacBuilds
@ZacBuilds 2 года назад
Great tip! Appreciate it man. And I've been looking for an excuse to get a cordless jigsaw, so maybe this is it!
@necrojoe
@necrojoe 2 года назад
@@ZacBuilds Honestly, a jig saw is overkill. Just a small pull saw, or like he said, a chisel. Put it on a backer board, and one solid *thwack* with a wooden mallet and a chisel, and you're golden. Or, an oscillating multi-tool with aplunge cut blade is good, too, with a backer board.
@jp8479
@jp8479 2 года назад
Use your favorite tool, the multi tool. Do not make the tab thinner. It could get loose while cutting due to the forces

I would suggest putting a little felt like fabric to bottom and to the side to not scratch and dampen the lens / laptop.
@ZacBuilds
@ZacBuilds 2 года назад
Maybe you didnt see the entire video? I did put felt on the laptop brackets. That's a good idea for the lenses though. I was less concerned with those ones, because they all have soft plastic hoods that protect the bodies, but I think the felt would make for a better looking and even more functional setup. Thanks for the suggestion!

you could add a roll out shelve above the lenses for other things like batteries and other smaller equipment
@thegxpguy
@thegxpguy 2 года назад
if you ever get a new lens you could make a slide out shelf in the same drawer cabinet, double the walnut plywood and make your own walnut edge banding, doubling the plywood should give you enough depth so the new lens wont rattle around, this is assuming it wouldn't be a super long lens since you're limited on height.

One of the things which may have have had an impact on your engraving is the possibility that the waste board isn’t parallel to the router. Get a flattening bit and run it over the whole lot at a 1mm pocket until you’ve surfaced the whole waste board.

Love your channel! As a LG OLED user just wanted to drop some tips to avoid burn in. Have your taskbar automatically hide, black desktop background only, and get rid of all desktop icons. It definitely takes away from the aesthetic but those items are high risk. Regardless, looking forward to more amazing content. You've inspired a drawer mounted & water-cooled PC build.

Tips: Buy extra bits because you will break them 😆 Buy another plastic insert for the dust boot. Make sure you level your spoilboard. Always, always check the preview for random tool paths. Buy a battery operated screwdriver if you stick with the stock clamps.

The sky's the limit. Workshop tool caddies on wheels would be an interesting challenge to think outside of a box on wheels. Some slot and tab joints ? Finger, or dovetails? All a pain if you do them any other way than cnc. Bring on the projects, this looks like something right up your street for rapid prototyping or models of larger projects. A Dremel tool bit stand with levels. Accurate holes! 😃

A v-bit carves between the lines, so changing the depth does nothing. Making wider text makes it carve deeper because the gap between the lines is wider. Separately, If you're using plywood that you know is flat, yet your text isn't equal across your piece, your spoilboard is likely not flat. Maybe you did that off camera? If not, you'll need to for sure. And you'll need to again over time as you carve into it and as your table flexes.
@ZacBuilds
@ZacBuilds 2 года назад
Appreciate the info Michael. I didnt make any adjustments off camera, just got lucky on that second attempt. I've been doing some research since making this video and it definitely seems like I need to surface my spoil board. So I'll be doing that ASAP. Cheers

About the text problems i have some ideas: The angle on v bits limits your max depts on a given width because if this geometrie given the same text size you can carve deeper with a sharper angled v bit than with a wider angled on, you are using quit the wide angle on your v bit which propably is why its not really working as you intended, also check if your board is flat if your z is higher then the board where you are carving it wont work
@patrickguest2762
@patrickguest2762 2 года назад
you need a smaller angle v bit !the 90 deg ones dont cut small text well because the text would have to be huge for any meaningful depth of cut

You could have placed a thin foam layer at the bottom of the drawer where you store your camera lenses. This would have provided cushioning in case they rattled or if the drawer or desk was accidentally bumped.

with the cnc wait till you start to experiment with programs that you type in measurements of shapes or what you are drawing, like AutoCAD or i actually use adobe illustrator, turn the ruler on, make a layer for measurement points and another layer for shapes etc and get to making stuff while keeping in your head how you want to cut it out, like solid shapes vs thin outlines etc then save as an svg. so using illustrator for logo work it can be saved for engraving work or cut-outs.
@hunterdail
@hunterdail 2 года назад
hey so this might help address your depth of cut with the engraving bit but me and some friends got a shapeoko and we were having the depth of cut problem with precison milled aluminum so we found we had to basically do a full flat pass over a majority of the work surface so that it was flush to the machine, idk how much it might help but definitely something to look into!!

The lense drawer had a lot of empty space over the lenses, so why not design something like what small Jewelry boxes do by folding outwards to let you access the bottom. In this case you could design something that moved away from where you are sitting for easy reach to both level of lenses.

Been waiting for this vid! Love the vertical drawer, and can't wait to see the completed dock setup. Will you be mounting your dock on the desk, so you can utilize SD slots and temporary USB devices? Love the lens organizer too. I had yet to think of using the CNC to "label" things. I'm gonna try that! Also, we chose to get a Shapeoko instead of X-Carve, so I don't think we're allowed to be friends Zac. :) Have a great weekend!

Hahaha oh no, is this the wedge that drives us apart!? Ya once I get the thunderbolt 4 dock installed my plan is to have everything on the desk be able to switch between my desktop in 1 drawer and the laptop in another at the flip of a switch. I might also need to get something called a KVM to switch some of the devices. It'll be work, but I've got it all planned out haha. Thank for watching!
@tobiasmaierlfbg

For the carving of the lense measurements: Since the bit for engraving is angled it seems like it couldn't get deeper without automatically enlarging the letters. Maybe that was the max depth for this bit in order to get your desired lettering size.

Great video, thanks for sharing! I'm not familiar with the X-Carve's Easel Software but have some CNC experience with Mastercam. In Mastercam you can set a break-through setting so that your cuts will break through the material based on the setting of your choosing. So for example, if your material is 3/4" thick you can tell the software to break through the material .015" past your material thickness. If Easel has this option it would be good to use it for two reasons, one is so that you don't have to struggle with getting the cutouts out of your material and two you won't ruin the spoil board by cutting too deep past your material. Also, a good sharp chisel should make quick work of removing the tabs that are left behind. Again, great video and really enjoy watching the learning process.

Yeah, that poor airflow fan has NO chance of creating enough negative pressure to pull any air through the drawer. I estimate at least 20-30% reduction in cooling performance of the laptop, especially since it's closed and because it has the exhaust directed downwards. Heat rises, gets pulled back into the chassis... you see where this is going. Looks good, but that's about it.
