There does seem to be some common elements with the Buddhist renunciation of the material world. And of course, there's nothing wrong with living by Buddhist principles. The practical problem is that if an entire society becomes monks and they all renounce the family and reproduction, then within a generation you have no society left. Southeast Asia is taking the manufacturing jobs leaving China, so even though their fertility rates are low at least they have foreign capital coming in. And even though Europe will suffer population decline too, they're starting from a higher base of prosperity than China and there's no 9-9-6 work culture to beat down the working age people (and the labor protection laws there are strong). North America will be okay because Mexico's demographics are okay and the US can make up for a low birth rate with immigration as needed.
